JCC 2020 Deadpool-ish

I did not know he was still alive.

 

The fact that the first person to break the sound barrier made it to 2020 is evidence to just how fast our plane and space technology accelerated in a short time.

 

A) I had no idea he was still alive, but I guess I’d also have been surprised that death had been fast enough to catch him. At 97, he had a good long run.

B) It’s really amazing when you conceptualize the risks he took and the amount of skill, daring, intelligence, and professionalism it took for him to overcome them. What an absolutely incredible accomplishment he had, but even more impressive is the amount of courageous, incredibly talented work he had to put in to get there.

 

They don't make 'em like that any more. Godspeed.

 

Same. I really thought he'd passed years ago. A true legend and pioneer.

 

I find it heartening that folks weren't aware he was still alive because that means that, unlike me, some people are sufficiently offline to not know he had a relatively active Twitter.

 

Apparently my Twitter game isn't what I thought it was.

 

I only use Twitter for sports stuff, so no, I don't follow random celebrities. Just Patrick Mahomes' fiancee, thank you.

 

I read Yeager's book several times. He had an incredible life.

 

Ambient composer Harold Budd, age 84, died of COVID-19.

A loss. I would want Budd's music to drift me off to my eternal slumber. We should all be so lucky.

 

He was a great mountaineer, I've read some of his books.

 

I just discovered Budd earlier this year. Listened to The Serpent in Quicksilver and Abandoned Cities. Never got around to reviewing them. I should do that. I really loved the Abandoned Cities album. Just two tracks, but both fantastic. That's the kind of moody slow ambient that I really respond to.
