Welcome to the 2023 Fitness Goals thread! As we work towards our personal goals this year, this is a thread for support and encouragement only. I’m keeping mine simple: a minimum of 10 races this year, preferably 12 but I am giving myself some leeway during the inferno months of July and August. Stick with my weekly run club. Go out on my bike again; it’s been awhile. Weekly swim workouts during the summer.
I’ll be keeping mine simple as well. A minimum of 3 gym sessions per week and keeping better track of my diet (I’ve become too reliant on processed foods for work). Also some hill running in the summer.
Hi all! Mine are straightforward as well: -run a half marathon -deadlift 600 lbs -drop down to 200 lbs (currently at 225) -bench 315 for reps (minimum of 3) No injuries. A lot of focus. A lot of motivation. Everything is achievable. Good luck everyone.
Happy New Year. I'd like to: maintain my weight go to spin class at least once per week keep up with strength training continue to be consistent with yoga everyday run 4 races
Yeah, I need to add that: Yoga at least once a week. I have issues with my back when I don’t keep up with it.
How often do you guys just experiment with different stretches and motions to stretch different areas? I used to practice yoga often in college, but since I’ve moved to more of just stretching what I know needs to be stretched and just kind of relieving tension all over my body. This guy’s suggestions single handedly have helped me relieve some new knee pain I was experiencing last month.
Yoga once a week Strength training twice a week Running 3x a week 5k by spring Half-marathon by the end of the year I don’t understand exercise that isn’t running so that will be my barrier. It seems like there’s a lot of math.
Okay mine are similar to last year. 20k steps on average per day. Already on track on day one at 22k walk 16 days of over 56k steps that’s it.
@The Jedi in the Pumas I do experiment with stretches, but I focus on my problem area (lower right back). I get various stretches from my physio and some I research online. I’ll have a look at that guy’s videos. As far as other body parts are concerned, I mostly use the generic stretches that I have used for decades (I increase duration and intensity as required). I have often considered trying yoga or tai chi. My wife’s grandfather practices tai chi and his posture and movement are remarkable for a man in his 80s.
I get my yoga postures from an old DVD I had called Yoga for Runners and sometimes I'll do youtube searches for yoga for runners. I focus on my hamstrings and hips. I leave myself a good 10 - 12 minutes after each workout to do yoga.
I have a Gaia subscription and do yoga mostly by Rodney Yee there, although I also do Yoga for Runners by Kreg Weiss.
That's what works for me. I've been running for decades and I know what works for me, so I stick with what works. Also, I'm old and set in my ways.
-Try to stay injury free this year. -2,200-2,400 miles run -Work in more lower body strength training. -Do more dynamic stretches before activities. -Run one new race in a new location I've never done before (have Cherry Blossom 10-Miler in DC so this should be easy). -Do a duathlon.
When I was at my grandmothers for Christmas I ate a bunch of sweets cause she always buys them. Anyway I thought there was no way I didn’t gain like 5 pounds. I ended up losing .2 pounds. Which isn’t a lot. But it’s amazing when you expect to gain weight.
Nah. It was probably because one day I woke up at 4 and she was out shopping and going to the office most of the day so I didn’t feel the need to stay at the house so I got 32 miles of walking in. That’s probably what saved me. But again I did have a lot of food. Enough that I thought it would negate the 32 miles.
I am up 6 pounds since the Wednesday before Christmas. 9 since Thanksgiving. It will probably hang high another week until the excess calories around the house are eaten. Then the sparse days of January should help bring me down a bit. If I could team that with treadmill time, it might help. But the couch is my ally, and I cannot betray it.
Way to long. 10 hours and 30 minutes. I just found a mall with free wifi in Toronto and just walked around there most of the day.
I couldn’t walk that long by myself without listening to stuff. the internet is a godsend when it comes to that.
