Welcome to the 2024 Fitness Goals thread!

As we work towards our 2024 fitness goals, this thread is for support and encouragement only.

My goal is to run more, further, and faster. Also to not regain the 15 pounds I lost in 2023.

I did a 5K this morning to kick off the new year and got 4th in my age group so I’m pretty excited about that.

I have a 5-miler, a 10K and a 7-miler lined up so far for the spring. I have in my mind doing a half marathon in the fall, mostly just to see if I have one more in me before I get too much older; we’ll see if I think I can devote the time and energy to that level of training.

Okay last year I think I had my goal at 20k steps. Lowering that to 15k steps on average a day.

there was a month this year where I only got 8k steps on average. But luckily I got like 60k in January lol.

also I want to swim more. My university has a pool that’s usually used for the swim team but there are like 2 hours a day where anyone can use it if you book ahead.

I want to walk more, but I tend to step out of the house and decide it’s either too hot or too cold out. This year I’m going to stop making excuses and just do it. My three dogs absolutely love when I walk them, just not all at once.

I’m also working on arm and wrist strength, after two big surgeries in the last half of 2023 I can work on the left. My right still has around 10 weeks before I can begin to pick anything up or grip.

Kinda hard for me to do anything when my ankle is still hurting [face_frustrated]
Tried walking, did a mile out before I had to stop.

Bit thing is this year is to get into the best shape of my life and run a 5k in under 30 min

My PT instructor is ghosting me. I hope she lost her phone, and doesn't hate me. :(

My ta tas are getting bigger and harder with the push up routine started in Oct. Continuing with that. Currently do between 60-160 every other day at 20 a pop which is a huge improvement from the 6-8 a pop at the start. Looking forward to getting to the 30 a pop mark.

My goal is to continue to drop weight until I reach my target (8 lbs to go) and to maintain that. Once that’s achieved, I want to balance my diet and continue to eat healthily (while enjoying the occasional unhealthy treat).

I want to improve my 5k time, which is currently around 24 mins 30 secs. I’d like to shave a minute or two off that.

I also want to improve my strength. I haven’t been lifting for a while and I’m thinking of getting a PT (for one session) to take a look at my form and help me to put together a program.

My main goal is to hopefully run a Boston qualifier at the Chicago Marathon in October. I got the marathon itch again after knowing a ton of people who ran it last year plus seeing what Kelvin Kiptum did there. Luckily, I had a time qualifier for it, so I didn't have to try my luck in the lottery. Good news: I age up so I get another five minutes for Boston. Bad news: based on where last year's cutoff was, I'll probably have to run my old age group to time actually get in. Regardless, it's an awesome race and environment so I'm really looking forward to it. I did back in 2016.

Pretty mild compared to many of you here but I want to do more to address cardio/endurance, so I can continue to enjoy hiking and continue to keep up with our "kids" when we do head out! At present I focus more on basic strength training. Made some progress in the cardio direction in 2023 but want to ramp that up, especially over the winter, so what when we hit real camping season (for us anyway) in early spring I am raring to go!

anyway January first 20k steps. And that’s a baseline without even trying.

just do a bit less than that a day and we are golden

    From last years thread:

I've had a bit of a start already. I had another swim lesson this morning and I think we made some progress on treading water. I'm still not at a point where I can genuinely tread with my mouth out of the water the whole time, but I'm at least not panicking and able to be okay when my mouth goes under and work to get another breath before I wear out.

I'm also booked with a personal trainer for the first time and I start seeing her on Monday afternoon, with a plan to see her once every two weeks.

2023 prepared me for this. For the first time in my active life, my fitness goal is Dad Bod. Incredible, it's 3 January and I've met my goal! This was so easy. I don't understand why the rest of you lot seem to be struggling!

30k steps yesterday 10k today. Gonna hop on the treadmill and go for a light walk to get to 15k. I either drive to Florida starting tomorrow or the next day either way not a lot of steps. I should make up for it while at Disney world though. Last time I was there I got 30k each day I was there. And that was before I got obsessed about steps

I did my gastric bypass in November and my body is definitely changing. I haven't lost a huge amount of weight, but I feel a lot more agile and flexible. On the downside is that I can't get enough energy into the body for long endurance. My goal before the operation was to be able to do a long ski race next winter, but I think I am going to to switch that to 2026. Instead my goal this year is simply to get into a rythm of regular excercise, I do see my PT once every two weeks, but I need to get better on doing some kind of excercise inbetween. My goal is to get two sessions in every week.

I had a year where I tried to do three 5ks and one 10K. I did the three 5Ks. One year, I did a 10K, but it was a month after I badly injured my knee.

My goal this year is to run three 5Ks and one 10K. I’m currently training for the first 5K. I want to do one hiking vacation.

When one of my friends had that procedure she had trouble getting enough protein in, and she hated the taste of the drinks that are heavy in protein. Once she found one that looked like water, and had minimal taste, that helped a lot for her to get some energy.

I have only ever done a half marathon. My time was pretty bad I think it was 3 hours 45 minutes. But I wasn’t running the whole time. I know for a fact I can do better.

but I have always said start out with smaller goals. Sure so hit 33k steps a day this year on average. But like 5 years ago I was averaging like 7k steps. The year after that 11k the year after that 20k and then 30k it’s not like you can go from 1 to 100 here. Your body isn’t going to accept that

For me, the struggle was getting through 90% of the training for my 10K and then coming up against the deadline. I decided I would do it anyway as it was virtual and I just had to do it on a treadmill. Well, 3 miles in, my treadmill literally broke. I walked half a mile to the Rec Center and started over. I had to hold on the handlebars and went 3.4 MPH for 6.2 miles. I was crying by mile 4, but I did it. I now want to take my years of running 5K races and continue to 10K. My eventual goal is a half-marathon, but I have to take it slowly. I started running to recover from a broken ankle 10 years ago and had never been a runner before. So it makes me feel proud to still be doing it.

Oh and I don’t even run often at least off the treadmill. I think the last time I ran more than a mile straight off the treadmill or elliptical was during that half marathon I did

One of my accomplishments of last year was getting to be less neurotic about people seeing me exercise. I've been harassed for my weight a LOT and it's very discouraging to be told to never come somewhere unless my butt isn't as fat. So I started doing training runs around my neighborhood and then around the city center and such. Since it's December, I'm back to doing it in the gym so I can be warm.

@DarthIshtar , only the lowest of the low would harass a fat person exercising. I have huge respect for people who realize what they need to do to be healthy and go out and do what it takes, no matter what others think. I go out of my way to encourage anyone who is trying to do better, no matter what their starting point is. Hats off to you, and stand tall as you press forward to a better you.

Harassing anyone over their weight is awful. I’m so sorry you went through that @DarthIshtar. [:D]
