Art from Dinotopia - James Gurney

Jurassic June has returned! I'm sure some of you are familiar with the drawing challenge, where you create prehistoric related art for the month of June. It be fun to create and share what we come up with in this thread.

A week of colours will be award for the winning entries at the end of the month.

I am interested to do this, but I've never drawn dinosaurs. Surprising, I know :p Might try some woolly mammoths though, those guys are cute.

Technically, birds came from a class of dinosaurs. Protofeathers evolved back then and there has been fossil evidence of some sporting plumage.

Trying to capture that look artistically has been a bit tricky though I think James Gurney has done a wonderful job with some of his works, especially in Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara. Some references for inspiration.

There will be more inspiration soon enough, given that they have announced the Jurassic World animated series.

While I'm not sure what to draw for this, I gotta say that illustration had me intrigued enough to look up "Dinotopia". I kind of want to check out the books now.

Definitely worth checking out. A few years ago they released a special 20th anniversary edition of the books. The original artworks were rescanned and a special "Making of" section at the end. James Gurney does a blog which is has some great tips and resources for artists.

There was to be a film back in the 90s but that had unfortunately fell through though. That was before the prequels started production and there had been controversy when TPM had came out due to some of the similarities Theed shared with Waterfall City. Interesting article regarding that bit of history
    here.

There was a Walt Disney TV / Hallmark miniseries that lead into a tv series that only went for 1 season.

I probably went a bit overboard there :p I grew up with the books and his works has been an inspiration for me.

Ok this has had a few names but I based it in Nessie so a plesiosaur, and I have photos of the creation process if no one buys I made him - my son has christened him Dicosaurus......will leave that to your imaginations.

Wonderful works, I love the Ceratopsian you've created, @Togruta and also the Plesiosaur you've created @Adalia-Durron

It's hard to choose as both are great and you both worked with different mediums. You both are awarded colours and title for a week. Congratulations!

To round out June, the piece I worked on is of a Parasaurolophus:

I appreciate the offer, but as I have them I'm not fussed at all.......honest. I did it for fun.

Having said that, I know you never take the win but I do so adore your work.
