Fantastically tragic details on what Obi-Wan remembers from the crash. :(

The encounter with Padme brought tears.

Obi-Wan studied her for a moment and then gave her a gentle and encouraging smile. ?Tell me, Padmé,? he said quietly. ?Did Anakin know that you carry his child??

Can't wait for the next post!! :D :D

Then the awareness of the Chancellor?s body falling forward, his hand resting on Obi-Wan?s shoulder as if he had reached for help. But it was too late to help Palpatine; he was dead, too. Obi-Wan felt his own grasp on life growing ever thinner and then?

    "And there was much rejoicing."

Another very moving update MamaVader. Of course, you're not the sort of writer from whom I would expect otherwise.

Alley_Skywalker I can kill off Anakin with no problem. Killing Obi is much harder. [face_blush]

    Chapter 3

Padmé met his eyes and smiled sadly. ?I should have known I wouldn?t be able to fool a Jedi,? she murmured, her hands twisting around each other once more.

?Tell me,? Obi-Wan encouraged as he sat up in bed a bit. He tried not to grimace as the burns and cuts pulled and tugged with the movement, but Padmé saw his discomfort and concern flashed across her face.

?I?m fine,? Obi-Wan said. ?Now?let us talk about you.? There was infinite patience in his voice and she sighed heavily and got to her feet.

Turning slightly so that her profile faced him, she placed her hands against her belly and pulled the gown taut. The round bulge of her belly was quite apparent now, and Obi-Wan could only stare at it in amazement. ?Oh my??

She laughed, though it was a soft and bitter sound. ?Oh my is right,? she agreed.

?When is the child due to be born?? Obi-Wan asked, desperately trying to focus on mundane details as his mind raced, thinking about what this unexpected event would mean ? for all of them.

?A few months,? Padmé answered. ?Not too long.?

?And all these months you?ve been alone with no one to talk to about this,? Obi-Wan guessed. He reached out once more and took her hand. ?I see why Anakin loved you so much. You?re an incredible woman, Padmé Naberrie.?

She took a deep breath. ?Padmé?Skywalker,? she corrected softly and her eyes met his with a hint of defiance.

Obi-Wan could only gape at her, his mouth hanging open in his shock. ?Skywalker?? he repeated in a choked voice. That Anakin had loved her was no surprise, even a child was not unexpected given their intimate relationship, but marriage?

Nodding, she clasped his hand more tightly. ?Yes, we were married.?

The Jedi paused a moment, blew out a breath of air. His free hand came up and ran through his hair in an agitated motion. ?Okay.? Accept what cannot be cannot be changed. That was the Jedi way and the only possible path to take. Then he met her eyes once more. ?When??

Padmé answered quietly, ?Three years ago.?

Obi-Wan considered her answer for a moment. ?When he escorted you back to Naboo,? he said softly, and there was no doubt in his voice.

    ?Yes,? she murmured.

His jaw clenching, Obi-Wan said stiffly, ?I?m the one who asked the Council to let Anakin escort you back to your planet.? There was hurt in his voice, and betrayal. He could not help it. To know that he had been the one who had given Anakin the opportunity to betray the Code was almost unbearable. It felt almost as if he had given him permission.

?Obi-Wan,? she said. ?I?m so sorry?? She released his hand, sat down and placed her hands protectively over her belly where Anakin?s child grew. ?It seemed? It seemed like our only chance and we were in love.? Shaking her head, she closed her eyes tightly. ?It was stupid and rash and we had no right, I know.?

?Anakin always loved you,? Obi-Wan murmured. ?Even before I told him I?d train him, before Qui-Gon?? He paused and swallowed hard. ?He lost his mother and then you were there and you were something for him to hold onto.? Obi-Wan was trying to work out Anakin?s feelings in his mind, attempting to find an excuse for Anakin?s reckle

It's over??? Oh, that was lovely and sad. At least Palpatine died. I have to wonder what the other Jedi will say when they learn of Anakin's deception and then there is the whole chosen one thing. They wouldn't know that Anakin did destroy the Sith, from a certain POV. Destiny indeed.

    Good job.

Just rip my heart right out of my chest and stomp on it, why don't you! :_| :_|

But as heartbreaking as this was, it was an incredible story. I especially liked the ending, that they will hopefully find some comfort and support in each other's memories of Anakin.

As always, you leave me in awe of your talent, my dear! =D= =D=

    Awwww...that was so beautiful.

I love Obi-Wan wanting to be a part of the baby's life, no matter how big or small, and Padme was very wise and compassionate to it.

They can help each other grieve and remember Anakin.

    Wonderful job on this

That was wonderfully gorgerous! I'm totally tearing up, but I wouldn't have it any other way. This was such a powerful story - and one I enjoyed very much. @};-

I really like the bond that was already forming between Padme and Obi-Wan. Without Anakin, it might have been easy for them to blame each other... but they are such good people. Perhaps through their friendship, they will begin to find peace.

Lovely work! I'm so impressed, as always!!

    Loved it, wonderful story! :D

That broke the scale - on a scale of 100 I would rate that a 250 or so. Not one word out of place, not one false emotion - sheer perfection and so real.

I'm in total awe after this....

She laughed, though it was a soft and bitter sound. ?Oh my is right,? she agreed.

    Oh my--this doesn't fit me anymore...Oh my--when did my toes disappear?...Oh my...

?Anakin always loved you,? Obi-Wan murmured. ?Even before I told him I?d train him, before Qui-Gon?? He paused and swallowed hard.
I loved how you brought out the characters' emotions. Well done!

?Everything would have been all right if I could have told Anakin. We would have worked it all out, I know we would,? Padmé muttered, almost to herself.
If you only knew what could have happened. [face_devil]

?Yes?Anakin?s child,? he said. Then he reached out, let his hand hover over her abdomen. ?May I??
Without a word, she took his hand and placed it on the mound of her belly. Beneath his hand, there was an unexpected nudge, movement from a child who had not yet drawn a breath. ?The baby?? he said with wonder. ?It?s kicking!?
?All the time,? she agreed with a wide smile. ?This little one is very active. Kicks me all over the place. Feet and knees are everywhere!?

I liked how they kept reaching out to each other, trying to anchor themselves in this sea of grief. And I absolutely loved the comment about "feet and knees everywhere." ;) We know why.

If you ever continue this, please let me know!!!

Awwww, that is so sad. I actually kept expecting Anakin to suddenly pop up there. I suppoe it was more wishful thinking.

That really was quite beautiful and a gift to read. Thank you. :)

While the updates took a bit longer than I would have liked, this fic still has the same quality that makes your other works great: The way it feels like you're looking at a painting.
