The Guardian’s 1000 Artworks You Must See Before You Die

Okay, we’re going right back into a sub-category list as we move through the A’s on the list. This time, it’s “Ancient Americas,” which I think promises to be incredibly interesting. Once again, just to be plain, these sub-categories are still parts of the full-list. There isn’t one entry on the list called “Ancient Americas;” every one of the items listed on this sub-category page is one entry on the thousand item list. Anyway, this looks pretty great.

This one was originally discovered at the archaeological site of Monte Alban, once the capital of the Zapotec people. It’s made of twenty-five separate pieces of jade and is believed to represent the “Bat God.” Which, honestly, knowing it’s a “Bat God” makes it even cooler than it already was. This one is badass. Mask of the Bat God. Now that’s a movie title. Love it.

Clay Model of Ball Game & Spectators (100BC – 250AD) – Unknown

This model of a ball-game was found in a tomb in Western Mexico; scholars speculate that the model may have been intended to commemorate the fact that the occupant of the tomb was a ball-player. This is pretty cool. I think the variety of the figures is kind of amazing. Like something from this long ago, I would expect the “spectators” to just kind of be generic figures that are all the same, but they’re not. The body language of them is all different and I particularly like the one that has an arm around the kids on either side of them. And the detail of having the set of stairs leading into the “arena” is also really cool and surprising. I think I’m discovering that I have a very lazy understanding of “ancient” art, at least in some areas. I’m just constantly being surprised at the sophistication of this stuff.

Hard to tell who’s winning though.
