Decided to make a separate thread talking about the Anthology movies to get away from all the 'noise' currently going on in the box office thread.

Even though Solo did underperform a bit it still showed there is definitely a market for having more than one Star Wars movie a year. A 100m OW is no small feat. It is just a little disappointing when the movie cost 250m. All they need to do is make the anthology movies for a little less and they would be just fine. 150 would probably be a good budget for them.

I've been thinking for a while that it wouldn't be too hard to make a Kenobi film on a relatively small scale, easily under $150 million.

How much extra did the Ron Howard reshoots cost, or were they covered by the budget?

Shrink the budget and you shrink the take sometimes.

I actually think more modest budgets can inspire more creative solutions, so I’d be fine with smaller-budgeted anthologies. But not too small...

This. If they make it a more modest budget I think the 'A Star Wars Story' part of this franchise can really find its footing. I've also always had an overall feeling that modest budget movies in this style usually have tighter and better quality stories/plots.

Both Rogue One and Solo replaced directors. Solo in a more major way. That includes a major recast for Solo, and huge extensions in the production schedule, by several months. Normal movies aren't the colossal nightmare that Solo, and even R1, are in their production.

I'm pretty sure Disney is now going to use its streaming service for all future legacy stories. Obi-Wan, Boba, Lando, Vader, Maul, and Jabba stories (maybe a few episodes per character) and then also maybe a recast Luke, Leia and Han for post-ROTJ adventures. Maybe the small screen is best for these smaller legacy stories.

Lucasfilm will probably focus on Indy 5 for 2020 and take a break from Star Wars for that one year. Then you'll probably see the following...

2021 - Rian Johnson Film #1 (all new characters in Unknown Regions)
2022 - Benioff & Weiss Film #1 (all new characters set in ancient times)
    2023 - Rian Johnson Film #2
    2024 - Benioff & Weiss Film #2
    2025 - Rian Johnson Film #3
    2026 - Benioff & Weiss Film #3

2027 - Episode X (bring back Rey, Finn and Poe)(50th anniversary of Star Wars)

I think the budgets won't shrink much but they will concentrate on one Star Wars movie per year - released below in December ( after Solo things are going to change as Star Wars cannot sustain 2 movies a year as over saturation will kill it off for sure )........

    2020 - Kenobi
    2021 - Fett
    2022 - RJ 1
    2023 - BW 1
    2024 - RJ 2
    2025 - BW 2
    2026 - RJ 3
    2027 - Rey Finn Poe
    2028 - BW 3

Like Marvel having a service for all of its comics in catalogue, Disney should make a streaming Star Wars app, separate from its other streaming service and just branch out there if they ditch the big screen route.

I'm not saying that I am totally on board with two movies a year myself as I still like it to have that special feeling but I definitely think there is a market for having two movies a year if they want to. We need to be careful about listening too much to the things that are currently being said in the box office thread. A lot of those guys are just trying to add all kinds of drama into the situation. Remember that a 100m for an OW is still a huge amount. For a movie with a little lower budget Solo would be considered to be doing very well financially.

I do like the idea though of using the streaming service to release some of these films. Release one in the theaters and the second one they could release for the service.

How small would the budgets need to be for the movies sent to the streaming service in order for them to be financially beneficial?

The budgets for these films are astronomical, especially when adding/estimating the hundreds of millions in marketing, and whatever else. I don't see how these studios can make money.

    I'll never understand hollywood economics.

    This is a great point.

It'll also be interesting to see how much re-shooting 70%+ of the film added to the budget. A $100 million dollar opening is nothing to scoff at if you're using a modest budget. The only thing stopping them from having a focused 'A Star Wars Story' subsection of the franchise is the behind-the-scenes drama. Figure out the stories you want to tell and start hiring filmmakers for their art and vision, stop trying to micromanage stuff.
