most likely the alien evolved from a another species. Perhaps a chicken.

The two stage birth process really interests me - the face hugger implant, then the chest bursting alien. Does that happen anywhere else in nature ? I'm not sure.

Could the alien be the result of genetic engineering ?

Could the face hugger and the alien share the same genetic make up, but are two parts of a single species (similar to a tadpole and a frog ?)

Some really interesting biology there :)

There are some species of wasp (I think) that lay their eggs in another wee critter and let the larvae eat them inside out until they emerge as a caterpiller type creature which then trnsforms into a new wasp.

Not quite the same but a similar kind of approach.

It was a better choice to have Han say "I know" as opposed to "I love you too"

Interestingly enough, HR Giger's design for the chest-burster looked like a cooked whole chicken.

That's actually pretty accurate - many parasites lay eggs inside the host, and the eggs will hatch into larve which then develop.

There are urban myths about people giving birth to thousands of spiders or lobster egg things - but they are nothing more than myths.

It's kind of like asking the back story on Palps. I haven't read much Aliens EU (chuckle) so I wouldn't have an answer.

Though I do have a feeling that they were bioengineered... just a hunch.

If they were bioengineered, it wasn't by the Space Jockeys. :)

Why do you say that? Who knows... they could have been engineered on that very ship.

Maybe the Predator species bioengineered them?

This is like trying to find out where the Stargates came from.

My own pet theory is that the aliens where one of the first species in the galaxy (along with the space jockeys and some others)

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY before mankind evovled, maybe before the earth was formed, the aliens evolved from their most basic form and became 'sentient'. Because it was sooo long ago, by the time humans encounterd them, they had evolved too much for thier planet's eco sysytem (like humans are starting to do now in a certain sense) and overran the planet, all life eaten or transformed into aliens. This could happen with us, we hunt animals to extiction and are causing the earth's natural forces to change, but i digress.

Then the space jockeys came along and discovered the planet. After studying them for awhile, the come up with a way of storing the eggs indefinatley (the blue lasers/mist in 'alien') and take thousands away to become cannon fodder (partiulary vicious and useful cannon fodder) to use against their enemies. They do this occasionally, each planet they introduce them to gets its populace, and its eco system, wiped out by the aliens.

During one such visit to collect eggs, a face hugger (or egg) gets aboard OUTSIDE the laser quarentine. This egg then hatches, the face hugger jumps the space jockey. Before he dies he sets up a 'distress dignal' warning passers by to stay away. The Ship crash-lands, the alien born of the jockey dies in the crash. Sits there for thousands of years (my archeology is a bit hazy, dunno how long fossilisation takes to set in) until the crew of the nostromo finds the ship and the egg hold. And the rest is future history.

And that was the longest post i have ever done, sorry guys.

That's an awesome back story, if any author tries to explore this area that one would probably be one of the more palatable answers....very palatable.

Cheers for the positive feedback guys. Its just a theory i came up with after reading about the aliens biology and some theories on the jockys.
