Some day in the distant future nobody will even know what Mickey Mouse is, but they will know that attempting to use him in an original story will bring ruin down upon their household.

 

I still enjoy that Tolkien has Eowyn kill the Witch King specifically because he thought Shakespeare’s resolution of that prophecy was dumb.

Here's a ****post: boy I can't think of anything more quintessentially Tolkien than getting pissy about linguistic "misdeeds" created by 350 years of changing perceptions on c-sections.

 

I mean he really disliked Macbeth. The Ents also exist because he wished Birnham Wood actually had walked.to battle.

 

The virgin Tolkien literalism vs. the chad Shakespearean metaphor.

 

I thought Tolkien was only annoyed that MacBeth wasn't literal because he was a child at the time.

 

It's funnier to imagine a crotchety old linguistics professor grumbling to himself, though. "What the hell do you mean 'life's but a walking shadow'? Shadows don't walk. I can't believe he just brings up walking shadows and doesn't develop the idea into a forty page treatment on their speech patterns. What a hack."
