At the end of TPM, at the Naboo/Gungan celebration, we see a shot of Anikan, with his hair cut short like a Padawan, but he has the long Padawan braid, too, hanging from behind one of his ears.

How did he get that? He did not have any hair that long before, so it cannot be his braid. Did Lucas just put it there?

Is there any significance to the Padawan braid?

If I recall, Obi-Wan gave his own braid to Anakin after Yoda presented to him the level of Jedi Knight. But I could be wrong.

"If I recall, Obi-Wan gave his own braid to Anakin after Yoda presented to him the level of Jedi Knight. But I could be wrong. "

That makes sense. When I first saw TPM I wondered about his braid too.

As for the significance, it's just a way of marking out a Padawan amongst the Jedi.
Interestingly, for those species that don't have hair, either an equivalent is found or they just don't bother.

There are things woven into the braid to denote special acheivments. It's kind of like getting patches for specific accomplishments in Boy Scouts.

I think the reason Anakin's braid is as long as it is was because there had been a decent amount of time that passed between the Battle of Naboo and the celebration.

How much time passed between the end of the Battle of Naboo and the celebration?

Could be a couple of months or something. They couldn't round up that much confetti in just a week.

I also think it could be that the braid is made longer by weaving in long strands of Anakin's own hair.

Oh and because I am a perfectionist, I corrected the spelling of this thread. [face_blush]

They used the three hairs Gimli took from Galadriel(sp?) to hold Obi Wans braid in place on little Ani's head. :D

I always liked Anakin's entire look during the parade.

No one in the Jedi Temple understood why he changed from light to dark clothing. Probably because of the anger thing in Anakin. Most probably.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm 100% sure that Anakin had no choice, but to wear what Lucas told him to wear. George is the boss. ;)

You can only just see his braid, and his hair was kinda long to begin with, so maybe he just made a braid out of what hair he had?

Probably wove other hair in. I've had that done before, with embroidery floss-you can make a really long braid, longer than your own hair-with floss.

Removing it is a real bitch, though.

But what about the Padawans without hair? The braid is obviously is a sign of rank, showing the Jedi to be in the Padawan, or apprentice, stage of training. How do the other's show it? Like a Shaak Ti's race? Or a Rodian or an Ithorian padawan?

I always thought it was a tradition for human Padawans, or those with hair.

Those that don't probably have a different badge of honour, if you will.
