I feel like the other thread is getting off topic from the initial post. (Partly my fault) So I'm taking the Antifa conversation here so the other can get back on track. Here we can discuss all said groups, news, and events that take place.

Antifa rose up around 2016 in mainstream areas due to before and after election of President Donald Trump. There was some violence towards supporters of this by this group called Antifa until the supporters started fighting back. This gave rise to various groups like the Proud Boys and Oathkeeps (who have been around awhile) as the front line defense you can say. This culminated into the famous "Battle of Berkeley" after various right wing speakers were shut down or disinvited from speaking like Milo Yiannopoulos.

Antifa and groups claimed "hate speech" should not be allowed. But the Republican and supporters argued that you can't censor free speech. This right here: free speech, has been the heart of the argument between all the clashes. Yes there is the political ideologies, etc. But that has been the main driving force.

Should all speech, hateful or not, be allowed? And what is hate speech? How do you define it? To not offend or get over it its offensive big deal?

This has been the question culturally in a society that has increasingly become plagued by this problem.

This is part of the fight. Part of the...problem? How do we remedy the right to say what you want with not saying something offensive? Even the way one of those videos I posted above, it's a form of free speech of making fun of something.

Many more clashes have taken place. Portland, Oregon has been the most consistent in this area. It's almost a monthly basis.

Is there a solution? It would be fine if each side were on their own and could protest and/or say what they wanted peacefully. But with continued fights, every rally becoming a riot, the memory of Charlottesville, and the continued media presence it doesn't seem to be solved any time soon. And it doesn't seem that it wants to be as all this reflects the division in America today itself.

The Proud Boys is the weirdest ****ing far-right group since the Nazis. I can't wrap my head around hyper-masculine, anti-Muslim insecure morons naming themselves after a song from a children's film with all Muslim characters and sorta-Muslim mythology.

I didn't say I fully understand the proud boys. I have a better grasp on them than oathkeepers. But even though I'll say it's ok to expect a fight, it's become like they want the fight. Like they're the answer to antifa.

We also have a thread for discussing populism Arlon.

No they're not you cousin marrying silly person.

Antifa = antifascist, which means no matter when fascist groups are formed antifa are the answer to them.

You should always support antifa over right wing groups.

Well no. Nazi or white supremacists wouldn't accept all the Black and Hispanic guys in it though would they? It's a pride in country masculine group, not a race thing with them overall.

Arlon wants to be a Proud Boy. I'm shocked.

I know I stage reenactments of murders of socialists because I'm just Proud of my country.

You realize they hate Muslims and are anti-Semitic, right?

    On what constitutes hate speech:

I like the way it is described in the rules of the JC:

“Hate speech is defined any speech any post that attacks a person or group on the basis of attributes such as gender identity, ethnic origin, religious affiliation or lack thereof, race, disability, genetic attribute, or sexual orientation.”

And before the “well what about hate speech against white men/Christians/etc.”? There are protected groups of people who are protected because they were subjected to discrimination to the point of second-class citizenship or no citizenship in the past, so while I am personally not a fan of statements along the lines of “all white men/Christians/etc. are [insert insult here]”, the playing field is not level and such statements are not going to be viewed as equivalent to denigrating and degrading statements against women, minorities or LGBTQ people.

As far as Yiannopoulus speaking at Berkeley—my take is this: if the venue is taxpayer funded, he should be allowed to speak there, but students should not be required to attend, and anyone who wants to protest peacefully outside should be allowed to do so.

As far as “pride in country masculine group”—that sounds to me like a misogynistic and ethnocentric group. “No wimmenz and foren’ers aloud”.

Like I said, I'm not joining anything. I dont know fully all of it so I'm wary.

The hate muslims and anti semitic thing I can't say at least about the proud boys. They're mixed enough I don't think so. But I have seen many on the "right" at these rallies in videos with anti-Semitic statements on posters like "the goyim know".

Look. Soros is a bad guy. I get it. But him being jewish does not mean Jews or Israel is behind everything like I see all these conspiracy people say. And to say EVERY Muslim is a radical extremist gets old. It gets really annoying when you see those on the left and right say derogatory stuff towards Jews. It's as if the scapegoat from every side always has to be them. We've been over this: no no and no.

    Edit
@Point Given I wouldn't necessarily trust the SPLC with anything right now. There been shown to be quite hateful themselves.

But about that guy himself, I know he's weird a bit out there from what I've seen. I don't watch him for that reason. But many apart of the group are not even close to what he is.

How is George Soros a "bad guy"? I know I can say I don't like billionaires or people who make money not by contributing anything of real value but with **** like shorting a currency, but I know that's not why Arlon dislikes him.

I’m not seeing any problem with Soros, other than the fact that he still hasn’t sent me my check for participating in two Women’s Marches. According to the right-wing blogosphere, everyone who participates in the Women’s Marches is getting paid by Soros.

I meant my soros statement as a joke. Every post or news thing you see from the right it's about him funding everything on the left and anti American. That's why I said "I get it, he bad we good".

But you are rather sympathetic toward them. You won't join, but you said you would march with them. Your reason for not joining was the fighting.

As far as that article from National Review...they are defending two women who have written books indicating that they want to pigeonhole both genders into neat little stereotypes that in no way fit every person of either gender (for starters, they seem to believe that no woman could ever construct a bridge, because women can’t build stuff, mmmkay? ) and they have no idea what feminists actually want.

And yes, if you post a misogynistic troll site online “for the purpose of clicks,” your misogynistic troll site is still a hate site.

My reason for not joining is to be in a way neutral in affiliation. Like I want to be able to sit both groups down and talk without me taking a side.

March in general like at a freedom of speech rally. Many others go who are not proud boys or anything but support freedom of speech. If hypothetically antifa attacks, I'll defend myself and others. But I'm not going to a rally just so I can fight antifa which is what I'm seeing with these groups at times. It's like no dialogue can take place and they just want to fight

@bluealien1 if you think everyone is a nazi at a freedom of speech rally you're delusional. If you think I'm a nazi you're delusional.

Anyway, here's a video recently posted.

“Freedom of speech” means the government cannot arrest you for your speech. It does not mean that there are no consequences for your speech.

What I see the Proud Boys and their ilk favoring when they talk about “freedom of speech” is consequence-free bigoted speech.

That does not, and should not, exist.

Using Yiannopoulus as an example, he was banned off Twitter after his supporters targeted Lesley Jones with vile racist and misogynistic comments. His supporters are now claiming a violation of his “freedom of speech.”

Nope. He can still spew his bigoted crap if he can find a platform. He’s not in jail, either here or in the UK.

But there is no obligation on the part of Twitter or any other organization to provide him a platform. And there is no obligation on the part of women, minorities, LGBTQ or allies to stay silent and “respect the freedom of speech” of those who are spewing bigoted crap. I’m not a person who believes in “you can expect to be punched back if you’re punched”—quite the opposite in fact, I find the attitude immature and have called Trump out on it. But I am also not going to feel sorry for someone who lost his job because he chose to march with a tiki torch and chant “Jews will not replace us.” His freedom of speech was not violated, and his employer is not obligated to keep him employed after those images went viral.

@anakinfansince1983 that's fine. Problem is the double standard of Twitter and ilk which is part of this. People on the left getting free passes for things when on the right it gets banned. Like Louis Farrakhan. He made a post against Jews, and it's still there on his page. Nothing done about it yet Twitter has suspended people for far less. So if there is a standard, why not have it enforced all around?

Ignoring just how often Milo, Alex Jones and their ilk would break Twitter's terms of service before getting banned.

There is no liberal cabal trying to curb the free speech of these alt-right figureheads. In fact, the number of chances they received to pull what they had to say back within the realm of the terms of service was, frankly, ludicrous. In fact, Alex Jones only really got banned from Youtube, Twitter, iTunes and so on because they didn't want to be found culpable in aiding Jones' slanderous campaign against Sandy Hook victims. Otherwise I think he'd still be using those services to peddle his tripe.
