The Bubble and the Star Cluster
Image Credit & Copyright: Lorand Fenyes

Explanation: To the eye, this cosmic composition nicely balances the Bubble Nebula at the right with open star cluster M52. The pair would be lopsided on other scales, though. Embedded in a complex of interstellar dust and gas and blown by the winds from a single, massive O-type star, the Bubble Nebula, also known as NGC 7635, is a mere 10 light-years wide. On the other hand, M52 is a rich open cluster of around a thousand stars. The cluster is about 25 light-years across. Seen toward the northern boundary of Cassiopeia, distance estimates for the Bubble Nebula and associated cloud complex are around 11,000 light-years, while star cluster M52 lies nearly 5,000 light-years away. The wide telescopic field of view spans about 1.5 degrees on the sky or three times the apparent size of a full Moon.

A week later, I can't believe I got to see this in person. It is amazing. The Arch will be my favorite statue/building in America. I miss it.

@Jedi Bluth , did you go inside it? It's a cool ride and a great view.

B-17 returned from mission with battle damage. That's the bombardier's seat in the middle of the wreckage.

    M43: Streams of Orion
Image Credit & Copyright: Jari Saukkonen

Explanation: Where do the dark streams of dust in the Orion Nebula originate? This part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, M43, is the often imaged but rarely mentioned neighbor of the more famous M42. M42, seen in part to the upper right, includes many bright stars from the Trapezium star cluster. M43 is itself a star forming region that displays intricately-laced streams of dark dust -- although it is really composed mostly of glowing hydrogen gas. The entire Orion field is located about 1600 light years away. Opaque to visible light, the picturesque dark dust is created in the outer atmosphere of massive cool stars and expelled by strong outer winds of protons and electrons.

    Hey Sarge,

Yes sir, I went to the top twice. The museum part was cool but I only liked the parts about the Arch. The store had a few nick-knacks that I came home with. I watched the movie about the building the Arch, I can't believe that during the building of the Arch that they didn't have harnesses. I learned so much from the movie.

P.S. I also rode in a helicopter over the Arch. I never thought I'd ride in a helicopter in my life, but it was so much fun. I want do it again.

P.S.S. I took lots of pictures both from the top of Arch and the helicopter.

Cockpit of a C-130 right after it's last flight to the boneyard in Tucson, AZ. :( I used to sit in the swivel chair in the middle.
