    BANE.

He rolled quickly over and pushed himself back to his feet. For a moment he felt the urge to get out his grappling gun and fire it into the face of the towering behemoth. To end him once and for all.

No, he had defeated him before. He would do it again. Just not here and today. They had planned the trap. They had lured him here to kill him. Their playing ground, their rules.

But he had learned the patience of a good hunter long ago. A man like Bane did not stay in hiding for long. He turned over to the Question and then his hand threw one of his smoke grenades to the ground and again he pointed his grappling hook to the sky and pressed the button to lift him up to the metal crane high above. He hoped the Question would do the same. The only thing you could do with a trap was escape.

"Are you sure you want to risk that?" Khalan asked as she raised her hands. She could feel stares on her. Mutant. Freak. But Khalan did not back away, instead she took a couple steps forward as slowly as she dared. "I just want to find out why your kidnapping him." Khalan gave them a sweet smile and tilted her head; hands open to show she didn't have any weapons. "I don't want anyone to get hurt."

Dinah stared at the waitress using what appeared to be meta abilities!? That was a gutsy move given that she was in the Bat’s city, he must have known her though. No one could enter Gotham without him finding out… eventually. She shifted her attention back on the van. The girl was dragging it back so that she could disable it.

Dinah grunted satisfied, but then an armed man came out, followed by another one holding a hostage. The waitress did the dumbest thing, trying to approach them. This usually made the bad guys very twitchy and trigger-happy. It was not the moment for amateur hour!

“What are you doing!?” she hissed at the waitress.

Khalan turned her head and winked at the other woman. "You can put those down now." Khalan said as she turned back. There was an edge to her voice like she was still angry and she flicked her wrists, sending the guns back towards her as they clattered to the ground, in the next second she slammed hard into the hostage holding man, sending them tumbling to the ground. Khalan grunted as her chin and arm scrapped across the sidewalk and then lifted herself up, whistling sharply.

A large German Shepard ran full speed from a nearby park and snarled as he approached another man; using its large paws to force the second man to the ground and growl in his face before jumping back towards Khalan protectively.

"Good boy." Khalan said affectionately. She turned and readied herself for another fight. The German Shepard growled again, fur standing on end. I hope that other woman will stick around and help us.

"Want to lend us a hand?" Khalan asked Dinah with a smile.

    "What the-"

The thugs had been taken by surprise as they were all engulfed in smoke. One was then immediately downed by Red Hood, but another had a stupid idea of firing a gun off into the smoke. It hit one of his 'friends', a headshot which scattered their brains around the area. There were now only two living consumed by the smoke cloud, spluttering as they frantically tried to waft the smoke away. Gus, however heard the shot, and looked to the smoke. Nervously raising his gun, his whole body shaking.

If one strained their ears, they would hear it. A few voices from inside the warehouse. It seemed a few more of the thugs were coming outside to see what was going on.

Bane roared as Batman shot himself out of his grasp. Grabbing one of the massive cargo crates with his bear hands, he launched it towards the crane. He didn't wait to see if his cargo crate found its target, but immediately snatched up another and launched it in the same direction as the last.

If things were not hectic enough, Batman's built-in comms started to buzz. Commissioner Gordon was trying to contact him, and it was urgent.

But Bane was still furious. He had charged over to the crane, leaped up and started to clamber upwards. He was actually climbing up the crane, and fast.

It could have worked, had the man holding the hostage not pulled the trigger as Khalan tried to throw their guns out of their hands. The bullet went straight into the hostage's neck, and the weapons were thrown out of the hands of both gunman. They were defenseless and terrified. One tried to get back in the car, and the other began sprinting down the street.

The hostage lay on the street, blood oozing everywhere. His clothes soaked and red. Sirens began to wail in the distance. Batman may be able to get away with taking the law into his own hands, but would they be able to?

Still crouched and hidden by smoke, Red Hood -thanks to his helmet, watched one of the thugs fire his weapon blindly, instantly eliminating his ‘partner in crime’ with a single bullet.

    Amateur

That one was clearly not a ‘hardened’ criminal if he was going to get spooked so easily by smoke. Then again, it was a scare tactic The Bat used regularly, so there was that. Batman had them so shook, they were literally jumping at shadows, and he could certainly exploit that to his heart's content.

An amateur shooter was a danger to himself and everyone around him, which was something that was useful under the ‘right circumstances’. These were the 'right circumstances'. Red Hood wanted to control the encounter theater, but that could only last for so long. The key was capitalizing on the ever changing factors.

From the sound of it, other thugs were soon coming out from the warehouse, and they too would become engulfed by smoke -and add to the confusion.

    Good

Only ‘Gus’, his shotgun and the ‘wild’ shooter remained outside. To minimize being spotted by the newcomers, Red Hood moved closer to the door and prepped another smoke canister.

The door of opportunity was about to open, and he was going to exploit it for all its worth.

He stood on top of the crane and watched the behemoth make his way up to him. It was tempting to just aim for his head and fire the grappling hook, ending the threat of the man once and for all. He was not ready for it ... yet. But the thought appeared more and more often in his mind.

Gordon needed him, yet Bane needed to be contained. Too many priorities. But the harbor had changed. Bane was now no longer trapping him, Batman had laid out the trap for Bane. He waited for the man to be almost up and then he threw his grappling hook around the climbing giants neck and locked the magnetic seal.

"What comes up ..." He said with his raspy voice and then allowed himself to fall, the grappling hook still around the monstrosities neck and attached to his suit. The sheer power of gravity would make Bane fall with one violent push.

There was a chance he would not survive the fall. Batman accepted this risk. He would not kill him, but he would not risk any more to keep him alive either.

If irony was still intact he would probably break the neck the hook was attached to.

Dinah was about to try something when the girl ripped the guys’ weapons from their hands. But not before the one holding the hostage shooting the person in the neck. She took a mental note not to let any amateurs try to free captives.

She opened her mouth to say something but heard the wails of the incoming police cars. ‘Uh-oh...’ Dinah pursed her lips then turned towards the girl ”Secure that guy, I will secure the other, then prepare to run. There are enough witnesses so you can’t blend in with the crowd.” Dinah growled as she prepared to run after the escaping one. How she hated that part.

Khalan's heart lurched as the hostage was shot, and she barely heard Dinah calling out for her to help apprehend them before the police arrive. She whistled sharply again and Baron was at her side as she reached her hand out, grabbing hold of a manhole cover with her powers and flinging it rather clumsily at the other man trying to escape. She hit him in the lower legs and tripped him, before the manhole cover landed on his stomach, knocking the wind out of him. Khalan waited until Dinah secured the other guy and then ran over and grabbed her hand, Baron right on her heels.

"I know a safe place. Come with me." Khalan let go of her hand and disappeared down an alleyway, Baron barking at Dinah before following her.

Bane was yanked away from the crane, scrambling desperately to grab onto it. He tumbled through the night sky, plummeting closer to the ground. Then he landed, forming a crater. He was motionless as he lay on the ground. No sound of pain, just silence. Bane was dead.

Gordon was still trying to call Batman. It had to be urgent if it was this late into the night. The Question also might still be here.

With Bane dead, Batman had more time, but how much? Whomever had sent Bane here had obviously wanted Batman out of the way, and when they find out that their first attempt at his death had failed, they may well try again.

Three men charged out of the warehouse carrying guns. They stopped as they had ran directly into the smoke.

"The hell is going on?" one man yelled.

"We got trouble! I think it's... him!" another whimpered.

"I'm calling backup!" shouted the first who talked, as he began to run back into the warehouse. The others gathered their wits and began to walk out of the smoke. Coughing and tried to wave the smoke from their faces.

Police cars were already showing up in the distance. They were getting closer. If the two wanted to avoid trouble, they'd have to get out as fast as they could. They had both the shooters secured, they just needed to move.

It was a grim way to try and save someone, to have it fail. But it didn't mean it had to stop them learning. But first they needed a safe place to take everything in.

The smoke did its work for the most part. Red Hood counted three men, two were directly affected by the smoke and were unable to spot him, while a third rushed back inside intent on calling for back-up.

    No radios. More thugs inside.

Red Hood moved quickly and acted with practiced speed. As he slipped past the two momentarily blind and coughing thugs, he struck them with the crowbar at the base of their skulls with sufficient force to incapacitate them for a long time. With his free hand, he drew bolas from his utility belt and threw them at the third thug, with the intent of entangling his legs, then falling on him and silencing him.

He needed to keep him from calling for back-up. If that failed, the thug would still be silenced and removed from ‘the board’, but then he would need to stick to the shadows and strike from there, should an untimely alert be sounded.

Allan Skut. You are NOT getting away.

    IC: Red Hood
Somewhere on the outskirts of Gotham, October 29th

With two thugs quickly downed, Red Hood flung bolas at the third running thug, entangling his legs and making him fall, following up by quickly downing him. He had avoided letting the thug sound the alarm. There were more here though, and surely they would soon figure out something has gone wrong. Somewhere in the warehouse, there would be a small office room which Allan was supposedly be inside. It was just a matter of finding it.

Red Hood never made the mistake of confusing luck with efficiency, because he did not believe in luck. Time was limited and he had to make the best of it. He needed to know how many thugs he was possibly up against and their locations. He already knew they were armed. To accomplish this, he would need to get himself to a high vantage point and stick to the shadows. He didn’t need to use stairs as he was an expert climber. Above him: A crossbeam.

These warehouses all had very similar designs, so it wouldn’t take long to get a lay of the place.

Quietly, and with an acrobatic grace that would make
Catwoman envious, Red Hood began to climb. Kids today had no idea how much more advance tricking, climbing or parkour could become with the right training.

With his high vantage point, Red Hood was able to get a good look around the room. He spotted eight hostiles, each armed with rifles, five of which were patrolling the room, and the other three at a table, playing cards. In the far right of the room he noticed a small door, with Manager's Office written above on a sign. Inside, two silhouettes could be seen through a window, presumably discussing something. One of them should be Allan.

Red Hood took a few moments to analyze the five patroller's routes and guesstimate their reset times. He couldn’t waste time studying them at length, not with the stunts he’d pulled outside. But, brandishing rifles inside a warehouse? These were either highly trained pros, or recently minted rookies of the worst kind, already overcompensating-just like Gus outside.

Still, he needed to device the most effective route to the Manager’s Office. Either with the most or the least collateral damage. Nothing else would do.

The three thugs playing cards were not a problem at the moment, but…something…a sinister gear in the back of Red Hood’s mind clicked. Before moving further, he peered down and activated a zoom feature in his helmet. He needed to check out the a playing cards first, just to make sure they were ‘plain’ playing cards ands nothing ‘else’. Coming back from the dead did things to your mind and your soul- unspeakable things.

Things were going South pretty fast. At least they managed to apprehend the perpetrators. A pyrrhic victory for sure. The GCPD will have to deal with them now. Unfortunately their intervention put them under the spotlight. That girl had put her in so much trouble. Dinah did not look forward to a potential meeting with Bats.

”Alright, lead the way….” she nodded to the girl.

His cape was dragged around him and he stood above his dead enemy. He had killed Bane. He could blame it on the circumstances, the heat of battle or simply the enemies foolishness to climb so high he had brought the danger of the fall upon himself ... the truth was he had known the behemoth might die in the fall and he had.

He felt surprisingly little. No shame. No consciousness screamed to him demanding amends.

"It is over. No more need to hide." He send the words into the dark with his raspy voice. "He is dead."

Commissioner Gordon was trying to call him again. The Batman turned to make his way back to the Batmobile as people called the armored car he used.

"Commissioner?" He asked as he picked up the call through the audio integrated into his suit.

Commissioner Jim Gordon’s voice reported through Batman’s built-in radio in his cowl.

    “Batman… We’ve got some trouble…”

Jim sighed. He was silent for a minute and then continued.

“It’s Arkham. Two patients are missing… Maybe more, they’re searching the whole place now… It’s Joker, Batman. He’s gone. And Riddler too…”

Jim, on the other side of the line, was standing on the rooftop of the GCPD where the Bat signal was located. He shook his head and rubbed his brow. The job was wearing down on him. He was already thinking of retirement, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Without him, he thought, the GCPD could revert to how it was before him. Just as corrupt as the rest of Gotham.

“Listen, I don’t know where he’s gone, but you need to stop him before he gets back to his usual tricks. We think the Riddler may be with him, but we aren’t sure…”

    Jim paused again.

“Just do what you do best, okay? Don’t let the Joker do anything this time…”

    His voice cut out.

    The Joker had escaped, again.

    @DarkLordoftheFins

Somewhere on the outskirts of Gotham, October 29th

As Red Hood zoomed in onto the playing cards, a voice blared out through a speaker mounted on the wall.

    “Someone’s here.”

The thugs all looked up, readying their guns or looking around frantically. A faint hiss filled the room. A faint green gas started to create an eerie mist among the bottom of the floor. One thug shrieked out in horror, as if he had just seen the most terrifying thing in his life. Another followed suit. And then another.

Allan Skut walked out from his small office. His eyes wide with terror, and another followed. Something truly hideous.

“I wonder who came to play…” he crooned, brandishing an infamous glove, syringes on the end of each finger, before injecting them into the back of Skut's neck.

She gently tapped the metal and made a hold big enough to slide through and waited on the other side for a moment before leading Dinah through the back door, wedging it open and shutting it tight behind them as they were bathed in semi darkness.

"Come on." Khalan said gently, before climbing up the stairs. She stopped at the top and gently opened the door, a radio was paying in the background, and when they were finally inside, the door slammed shut behind them. Scarecrow!

From his high vantage point, Red Hood assessed the situation in a flash. Scarecrow’s fear gas was coming up from the floor boards, which meant the place was rigged. This was a trap- or a base of operations. What was the connection between Allan Skut, Scarecrow, and Mr. Grim?

    He would soon find out.

The eight thugs inside the warehouse were being affected by the fear gas, so they were practically ‘sitting ducks’. Red Hood shot them all in the head, this was his way of eliminating potential pawns from the ‘board’- at least that was the plan. He also shot-out both of Allan Skut’s knees, as he would rather have him ‘alive’, for now. The vigilante’s chilling marksmanship would probably give Deathstroke a run for his money.

Jason had already died once, he lost his parents and his mentor- his entire life for that matter. He had nothing left to lose, nothing left to fear. His Red Helmet was already equipped with a filter, and he was positioned high on the crossbeam, still, he would not take the chance, at least not yet. The fear gas was at ground level, so he still had time to act.

Quickly and silently he moved to a different crossbeam, using the shadows as cover. Firing his weapon had given away his position, but prior to that, he had been discovered somehow. A question for another time.

With a swift motion, he took the remote control from his utility belt to activate the ‘surprise’ he had prepared for such an eventuality. With his main hand, he aimed at the Scarecrow’s skull, then opened fired.

    The Joker
    Gotham Opera

"I ... I was considering the classics. You know? Blow up a hospital, kill a class from primary school. The Major. The Commissioner. Might get to that one later. But it all felt so repetitive. A good clown doesn't tell a joke twice. You know? But you! Oh you are just so PERFECT."

In his trademark purple suit he showed his grin showing all his sadistic cruelty and no apparent humor.

"Some jokes are like kids with cancer, just never get old."

He laughed. Almost a hysterical laughter.

"The joke really is on me this time, is it?" The man only known by the citizens of Gotham as the Joker turned to his victim and spread his arms. "Appreciate the scenery, I killed people in all kinds of places, but this is really for you! Closed on Tuesday! Oh I love those lonely Tuesdays." He grinned and looked around in the entrance hall of Gotham's opera. The walls were now smeared with Grafitti and the building was slowly rotting away. Yet, it still had this air of grandeur making it such a perfect place for this moment.

The Joker stepped to the man hanging from the ceiling and looked at the metal wire cutting into his ankles. It was a man like every other and yet for so many years he had been such an inspiration.

"Always felt like we two are kindred souls. If I had used more riddles I would probably have been called the Riddler, too." The Joker laughed. "But being the funny guy I am I make jokes and therefore they call me the ...?" He laughed out in a burst of maniacal laughter. Then he took the head of the man hanging there and pulled it up. Blood was dripping from his mouth. He was close to death already after having been tortured for days. "Lost your tongue?" The Joker asked and then looked down. "Forgot, you kinda did."

Again the laughter and he stepped back from the man formerly known as the Riddler. He grinned and took out a knife.

The Batman had never killed any of them. He had always stayed true to his silly little code, bathing in his superiority.

"What do you think he will feel? Regret? Envy? Relief?" The Joker laughed. "He will feel guilty. He hates you and yet ... no probably because he does ... he will feel guilty of not saving you." The Joker grinned again coming close to his bleeding, barely conscious victim.

"And they say I am mad." He whispered and stroked the man's face.

"You will get his attention my friend. Your death will get all of his attention. With you the great game begins. The final game. The game one player won't leave alive." He put the knife to the face of the former Riddler.

"So let's put a smile on your face."

    Update Part 1

    The Batcave, October 30th, 1:00am

“Master Bruce, glad to see you’ve arrived home.” Alfred, the life-long butler of Bruce Wayne was standing, pushing a trolley with food towards the large computer setup. Several files were displayed on several monitors of the Batcomputer. One on the Joker, one on the Riddler, and another, for a much more recent escapee. Victor Zsasz. The final two monitors had a live reading of the Gotham news and reports from the GCPD, available only to officers and Batman. The Bat would be notified of any crime that either source knew of immediately.

How did these three lunatics escape Arkham? Several months earlier, it was known that Dr. Crane had escaped, but he hasn’t been seen since, and nearly all of Gotham had been searched to the core. Gotham would need to have an intensive search to find out where all four of these madmen are, and also Black Mask III was still a problem.

An alert popped up on the GCPD reports screen. A murder in the Gotham Opera House… Edward Nigma. The Riddler. Dead. He already had a message from Jim wanting him there.

Alfred had already revealed the roast chicken and vegetables he had prepared for Master Bruce, however there wasn’t going to be much time to eat it. A storm was brewing. Something was on its way.

    @DarkLordoftheFins

Somewhere on the outskirts of Gotham, October 29th, Evening

Although Red Hood was fast, he wasn’t quick enough to stop Scarecrow doing anything. While the thugs around the room were being shot down, Scarecrow reached in his clothes for something, and brought out a customized SMG. There was a sinister something that was unique about it. He pressed his finger down on the trigger and fired at Red Hood. One of the bullets should hit, however he didn’t empty its clip at him before he quickly stepped back into the sideroom of the warehouse.

Allan Skut crumpled to the ground, screaming and clawing at his face. He was growing paler and his eyes bulged. He lay on the ground bleeding, screaming at whatever horror Scarecrow’s toxin was showing him. All the other thugs in the room were dead, and Red Hood had just been shot with Scarecrow’s new gun. God knows what the effects would be.

Kahlan’s home, Gotham, October 29th, Evening

The effects on seeing a man’s head blown to smithereens may certainly have an effect on someone who is as young and inexperienced as Kahlan, but it would indeed show them the grim reality of Gotham. Dinah and Kahlan had been very lucky as well, considering the circumstances, as they could be in a holding cell at this very moment in the GCPD. While Batman may have an agreement with the GCPD, other vigilantes don’t.

There were other people in the building, presumably mutants, and one of them had just approached Dinah and Kahlan in greeting.

If they listened hard enough, they’d be able to hear about a shooting on Mason street, with several armed men, a hostage that had been killed, and two unidentified people with a dog.

By midnight, there would be a report of a murder at the Gotham Opera. A man called Edward Nigma had been killed. That name sounded familiar… He was one of the infamous Gotham criminals. He was the Riddler himself.

    IC: Red Hood
Somewhere on the outskirts of Gotham, October 29th

Too late did he realize that Scarecrow had drawn on him first and had already fired. No amount of acrobatic skill could help him evade now, but at least his armored gear would ablate the points of impact.

    Wrong again.

Red Hood cursed under his helmet as he saw the entry points in his armor and fell down backwards from the rafters, crashing unceremoniously to ground level. He was bleeding and in pain, but nothing vital had been hit. He groaned as he lay on his back, yet he wasted not one precious second. Moving with practiced speed, Red Hood removed an injector from his utility belt and injected himself through one of the impact holes on his chest. He’d expected the toxin neutralizing agent he’d ‘borrowed’ from Batman to do its work almost instantaneously, but nothing was happening.

How was that possible? and How in the world did an SMG with armor piercing rounds make it to the streets of Gotham? Was that part of the Arms Deal he’d been chasing?

Jason realized something was very wrong when he heard the sound of screaming fade in-and-out with growing intensity and his vision began to blur. He tried to get up, but felt his head swim during the attempt. He began to hear a sickeningly familiar laughter now, mixed with the warbling screams.

    “No!”

He didn’t turn his head, but he could see a familiar silhouette appearing. The sickening laughter grew louder, closer, getting more maniacal with each passing moment. Jason grit his teeth and hissed in vain protest under his helmet, trying to stay focused and remain a master of his senses.

“NO, I said. You’re NOT here!!”

Then a second figure began to emerge from the hazy mist. This one was caped and cowled and also began to laugh at a lower register. This was a voice he also recognized.

“Grrrrr, no! you think this is funny!!? I’ll kill you BOTH!!”

Jason felt anger like molten lava coursing through his veins, almost setting him on fire. The figures kept coming closer, laughing, he could almost see their leering faces- together. He couldn’t shut his eyes against it, or stop himself from listening to their sickening laughing voices.

    “NOOOO!!!! DAMN YOU!!”

A new figure walked towards him. It seemed reminiscent of Scarecrow. But it couldn't have been a mask that was worn. It was as though the fabric was his literal skin.

"You fool." boomed his rasping, hollow voice. It thundered in his ears. He knelt down towards Red Hood and grinned.

"Black Mask has been invaluable to me." He lifted his SMG to study it, to show it off to Red Hood.

"He managed to make a few calls so I can move past the... complications that your friends had made." he chuckled, sliding a vial from his pocket, with an amber liquid residing in it.

"This... This is going to be shipped all around Gotham soon, and you can't do anything about it." he stood up, and slid the vial back into his pocket and began to laugh.

"Let's see the effects it will leave on you." he spat, slinking back into the darkness. Leaving him to suffer.

With a sudden forceful motion, Red Hood slammed his helmeted head on the floor as he jabbed a thumb into one of the open bullet wounds. He screamed as the flashing jolt of pain brought him a second of clarity, which he used to get up and defenestrate himself through the large warehouse window looming on his left side.

Zsasz, Scarecrow, the Riddler ... the Joker himself. Bruce had taken off the mask but remained in the suit. He had the feeling this meal Alfred had prepared would go to the microwave later.

He accepted the files, but more out of courtesy. He knew every word in it.

Now the Riddler was dead? Had one of the others got to him first? Had Red Hood? He was not beyond killing criminals. Yet, the urgency was something Gordon would not use if he did not find something very disturbing at the scene of the crime.

"I must see the crime scene, Alfred. The harbor, it was a trap. Bane was there. We ... won't have to worry about him in the future." He avoided the eyes of Alfred. He had not wanted to kill him, but he knew he had accepted that his defense would cost the giant villain his life. He was partially responsible. "We fought on the Crane. He fell down." He just explained and then put his mask on.

"They are planning something and I got the feeling Nygma is part of it."

Without a further word under the concerned eyes of his butler he made his way to the landing pad of the Bat.

"Certainly Master Bruce." Alfred sighed. "You should rest some time, Sir."

Bruce nodded only and left anyway ...

    -----

Half an hour later he descended into the opera and set down right behind Gordon and the humiliated body of the Riddler, Edward Nygma. He looked at the body and stepped next to his friend.

"What do we know?" He asked in the dark raspy voice of the Batman. The Riddler and Bane dead the same night. The city would be a better place without them, yet he felt the biting guilt. He did not kill. It was what set him apart from them. Deep down he knew it was a fine line and ... he had tonight almost crossed it.

Jim rubbed his brow as the Dark Knight appeared next to him, his rasping voice calling out for information.

"We think it's Joker." Jim sighed, waving his hand towards the scars on the Riddler's face, which formed a grotesque smile.

The Riddler was suspended midair, with metal wires that had dug deeply into his legs holding him there. His face had been mutilated, and his tongue was missing.

"The forensic team is doing its checks, but I'm sure your gadgets could do it faster."

Blood was splattered all over the place, but somewhere there had to be a clue of the Joker's location.

With a quick scan, Batman would be able to see that Joker left behind some of his old prints as usual. The wounds were at least five hours old, however, several wounds were from at most an hour ago, and caused by a completely different knife. He had seen knife wounds like these before. A phone rang somewhere on the Riddler's person. In his breast pocket was an old cellphone with an unknown number calling it.

    @DarkLordoftheFins

Somewhere on the Outskirts of Gotham, October 29th

It was nearing midnight as Red Hood lay outside the warehouse, suffering from the effects of Scarecrow's new toxin. Its initial effects were wearing off. His hallucinations were coming to a halt, but his vision was still blurred. He would need to work to find some sort of antidote, as this new toxin may well have some effects that would appear later. Allan Skut was still in the warehouse, and Scarecrow hadn't followed Red Hood. His arrogance had made him assume that Red Hood would not be able to cope with the effects of the toxin.

No. Perhaps before he had used the Lazarus Pit he may have succumbed to the full abilities of Scarecrow's toxin, but Jason Todd was strong enough to fight the worst of its effects for now. It would take a lot more to break him.

While he could save him, Allan Skut was beyond use now. With such a heavy dose of Scarecrow's toxin, he would be unable to talk and dead in at most two hours.

While his leads here had all gone dry, he would receive a message in a few hours, sometime in the early hours of the next morning, from his 'sponsor'. The Riddler was found dead.

    @greyjedi125

    Unknown Location, October 30th

The amber liquid looked, in a strange way, beautiful when held up to the light. So much potential in such a small thing. The new formula that Scarecrow had developed was particularly menacing. With the improved budget given to him by his 'friends', he was able to do a great deal with it. Wooden crated lined the walls of the damp cellar. One had been cracked open, and it contained rows upon rows of ammunition. A small table was positioned under a cheap light that hung from the ceiling, illuminating the room. There were two chairs placed by the table, with one occupied by a man bound by chains. He was sobbing, which could be due to the injection he had just received from Scarecrow, which was already working its magic on the poor man. The GCPD would be able to recognize him as Harvey Bullock, one of the detectives who often worked closely with James Gordon.

Whatever it was he was 'seeing', it wasn't pleasant. Scarecrow's toxin had began to make him yell out and scream. That was the cue to gag him. Scarecrow forced a grimy cloth around his mouth and tied it tightly around his head, muffling his sounds of fear. Scarecrow looked towards his colleague, the Joker, with beady eyes.

"He will not die from the dose I gave him, but won't be in any state of mind to talk properly again." he rasped, as he packed his supplies back into his silver case.

"We have surely gotten the attention of Batman, what with both your work and mine... I did have a complication with another vigilante who tried to stop one of my operations with Skut. Both should be no longer a problem." he grinned, showing a row of rotten and moldy teeth.

"What I want to happen next should be rather simple for someone of your talents. Hold some people hostage. Something that will want him to rush to the scene. A group of doctors, children... You know, you must have done this sort of thing thousands of times..." he clicked the locks on his case shut and straightened himself.

"I will have hundreds of cases of my new toxin shipped into Gotham by Halloween, and then we can finally break Batman."

    The Joker
    Unknown Location

The Joker lay his head aside and watched the toxin work. It was a work of art and beauty. With a smile he turned to his new partner and gave the Scarecrow a nod.

"Certainly. Consider it done." He gave him a grin. "Told that joke before. Maybe this time something a little intense. We want the opera to begin with an encore, shall we?" He laughed out loud and then turned to leave. Scarecrow was using him and he used Scarecrow. He was well aware of it. They called this a relationship. He was never good at those.

"I shall let you know where our dance takes place." He laughed as he left. "In pale moonlight!"

The Joker had killed the Riddler. The males were almost vulgar so easy they were to detect, yet the cruelty and set up told him this was no copycat. No, the Joker had done this.

He had killed before, but never a potential ally. What was the madman up to?

"This was a message. His game has begun." He stepped closer to the body and turned his helmet to infrasonic view, scanning the body or what was left of it for hints at the whereabouts of the Joker. There would be some. A message was delivered and he had to find out what exactly it said.

Folding his arms he scanned the body.

"All your men must be at high alert. The attack at the harbor, this here ... something is going on. The events must be connected."

A thousand times he had fought the man who hung before him. A thousand times it felt he had fought, defeated and locked away his murderer. Yet the cycle was about to repeat. Again and again. How many lives would it cost this time? How many more was the Dark Knight ready to sacrifice for his principles?

    IC: Red Hood
    Gotham Outskirts

He didn’t trust himself to ride his bike, so it took longer for him to reach his nearest hideout. Red Hood’s vision was still blurry, but thankfully, he didn’t need to see the keypad to deactivate the security code. The first thing he did was take off his protective jacket, reach for his medical kit and stick himself with stims and painkillers.

He didn’t waste time as he got a bit to bite down on, then the medical tools to dig into his own flesh and remove the bullet’s he had been shot with. This wouldn’t be the first time Jason would go through this very painful experience, and certainly not the last. Finally, he was able to bandage himself to keep from bleeding out.

It wasn’t pretty, but he wouldn’t die. Bruce had Alfred to aid him in such tight-spots, but Jason could trust no one. He was well aware of the risk he was taking operating alone and he accepted them.

Tossing himself on his cot, he could not sleep. Intermittent flashes and hallucinations were still present, but they were also lessening in intensity and frequency. Thoughts of the Scarecrow's new toxin and its disastrous potential filled his mind, that compounded with the new upgraded weapons made available to the criminal underworld of Gotham.

All hell would break loose in the city.

They would no longer have an advantage over the criminal element. Not himself, not the Bat, or Nightwing, nor the GCPD- no one. The balance of power was being tampered with. Black Mask, Mr.Grim and all of their associates needed to be stopped.

Still sleepless, it wasn’t long before he got a message from his ‘sponsor’ informing him that The Riddler had been found dead.

Jason took the news clinically, as he felt nothing concerning the loss of one of Gotham’s staple criminals. What he needed to know was ‘how?’

Getting up with a groan, he dragged himself to his surveillance center located in a corner of the room and proceeded to hack the GCPD’s database. He needed to know the time and manner of death before he could take action, if any at all. He also needed to see if they had anything regarding Scarecrow’s new toxin. It was certainly worth a shot.
