I think every entry in the treatment contest included Lando to a greater or lesser extent.

Due to his age, I think the best we can hope for is "lesser", but that would still please many people.

The last thing that needs to happen though is Kylo killing him. I'm fine with him surviving 9. There needs to be a shakeup with OT character deaths. You'd be surprised on how many people are turned off over the fact that all of the OT characters get the boot, but the new characters remain unscathed.

Honestly I'm just worried they'd find some way to step on Lando's character/legacy as well. Make it where he turned into some drunk or went back to being a gambler who goes bankrupt. Is barely convinced to come back into the fight to be, like you said, killed off by the FO/Kylo.

Have him end up with the Falcon again, bookending his arc. I think it’d be perfect.

No Lando please because of this. They have done enough damage to the OT legacy as it is. Leave well enough alone. Plus let these new characters just be by themselves now...no need for OT people helping out....the new characters are more than capable.

Or if he DOES show up, I'd be perfectly content with him having a cameo or a hologram. Maybe telling them that he's sending allies and they're on the way, and his allies play a part in victory later on. But maybe that's it.

Should have used him in TLJ in place of Maz Kanata with him at least interacting with Leia. Would have fit more better. In the end, there is no point on a small little cameo. Lando should have been integrated into these movies since TFA, and at best in TLJ in some greater capacity if they had any intention on using the character. Shoving him into the last movie is now pointless. The big 3 OT characters are gone. What's the point of him interacting with the new characters?...little meaning beside it being fanservice. If he had interacting with the OT characters - at least there is something worthwhile there. I think its too little too late at this point.

I stand by something I said before TFA came out...you signed Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, and yet aside from a small Han and Leia scene they never interacted with each other. WTF? Just such a waste and a horrible creative decision. They should have made a transitional trilogy with the OT characters being more front and center in Ep 7-9 while slowly introducing these new characters. Then the new characters take over completely by Ep 9 and they have their own trilogy in Ep 10-12...rounding out the saga. Win-win in my book. But whatever....

One of the funniest things Rian Johnson said was that he couldn't figure out how to get Lando in TLJ -- when there was a casino planet!

I really hope JJ rectifies this.

I don’t think Lando gambling with a bunch of war profiteers while his friends are fighting and dying would have been the best look for that character, frankly. I do hope he’s in IX, though.

I would have had him playing both sides, Lando style. But what you just described is pretty close to what they chose to do with Luke!

    "What's the point?" Seriously?
I find it rather odd to reduce a pretty important character of the OT to "if he can't interact with the big 3 he is pointless". He was a great character on his own, and there are plenty of ways to add him to Episode IX in a meaningful way that enhances the story. I agree that he should have appeared much earlier, but acting as if he couldn't possibly offer a valuable contribution to the story now is just odd.

As for the horrible creative decision. Have you thought about what consequences certain moves would have had?
It's always easy to say "they should have done X", and sure, they kind of missed out on having the big three together again, but doing that would have created a huge issue for the story itself. There is a reason why Michael Arndt couldn't find a way to make the story work as long as Luke Skywalker was involved. As soon as he was around, he took over the story and pushed the new characters to the side. He's just too powerful not to engage the enemy if he's around, but at the same time you can't have him take on the enemy, because then you wouldn't have a good way to not have them look like mincemeat. There may have been some way around that if they had thought long and hard about it, but the outcome would have required a completely different story.

The idea of having the old heroes being the focus in this trilogy, with new characters being on the side and taking over afterwards could perhaps have worked in theory, but there are quite a few issues with that one as well. First of all, it isn't any less fan-service, and having other characters take over after they weren't all that important before doesn't necessarily work out either. Then you have the issue of Harrison Ford probably not wanting to make more than one, he already wanted Han to die in ROTJ, there is little reason to assume that he would have returned without that happening this time around. That Carrie Fisher ended up dying before the trilogy was finished is also hardly something they could have known.

I've never heard Johnson saying anything like that at all. In fact, he very much thought about adding Lando right there. But that would have been the character that turned into DJ, and that wouldn't have worked for Lando at all. You can't have him be an opportunist who makes deals with the First Order. Not after he was a hero of the rebellion. And having him just appear in a cameo in the casino wouldn't have done him justice either.

You could always change the story to include Lando! It's not like Rian was being forced to write the story one way! :)

I don’t think it’s quite the same. Luke had a genuine reason for not getting involved, albeit a misguided one, and his arc led him to see the error in his thinking. If Lando was just gambling and living it up, it would have reduced the character, since even his betrayal in TESB was in the act of protecting the people of Cloud City. You could have him playing up people for info, but that would have just overcomplicated an already lengthy subplot. Canto Bight on paper looks like the perfect place to include him, but there just wasn’t an organic way to do so that would have fit with the story Johnson wanted to tell. It’s just the way it goes sometimes.

My only hope is that there’s a good role for him in IX, one that serves the story in a way that his inclusion is necessary, and also fits with the way he was portrayed in the OT.

Agree, it wouldn’t have worked that well. There’s two options in my mind. 1 – Lando runs a facility elsewhere, or 2 – he’s retired but still living the good life. I like option two. Imagine a rich, older Lando playing cards and still sassing people. But of course, he’s brought back into the fight, even if it’s a minor role.

At this point Lando is the only character and original actor they can bring back, excluding force ghost luke who sadly i believe probably won't feature all that much.

Just heard the news. I believe it. There was talk he was already getting into shape. This is great news.

    1) He might be the contact D’acy mentioned.

    2) He might have the ties now to help them build new alliances.

    3) He’s Uncle Lando to Ben Solo and might be able to communicate more to him on his path back about where he was wrong about his parents and where he’s been wrong.

    4) We could see Lando and Nien Nunb back together!

    5) Chewie & Lando together!

    6) Lando could perhaps read a final letter that Leia leaves before passing.

    This is great news.

Sorry. Should have been more clear. Fantha tracks, who were first on Kenobi, only confirmed he is back for IX.

The rest of that is just me geeking out over possible moments with him and 100% speculation from me.
