If I were to film a movie using nothing but bluescreen, and then later go back with Paint (yes, yes, heaven forbid, I hate the Paint too) to draw the settings... is that possible? I realize I would have to use layering to a level bordering on insanity, but I was just wondering if it is possible to do...

    Also:

    1) Does bluescreening require that you go in frame-by-frame and delete the blue background?

    2) Does After Effects have a Magic Wand tool or something of a similar caliber?

2b) If not, then what would I use to get rid of the blue?

    Thanks ahead of time.

You have much to learn young Jedi. After effects has a plug-ing for removeing blue screen called Color Key Difference. You do not have to remove blue from each frame. You may have to adjust each frame, but thats not to often.

Heh, what can I say? If you can find a n00bier n00b than me, I would be mild to moderately surprised.

I think the best thing for you to do would be to download AE's free trial and toy around with it for a while to get the hang of it.

Actually, I have access to the full program, but it's not on my home computer (it's far too wimpy).

But how difficult would it be to combine Paint and live action? I can't think it would be any harder than using live action + any other medium, but I have never actually done that, either.

So assuming that I am a complete n00b at bluescreening (as I am), how hard would a project such as this be for me? The entire production should run at about 10 - 12 minutes long, with every setting (maybe about 10 - 15 different ones) being drawn in Paint. I would still use props, but the background would be completely drawn at all times. I would, however, have to interact somewhat with it. For instance, there is a scaffold in it, and I will need to have characters standing on it (with the railing going in front of them).

    Thanks again.

    Paint? Like, MICROSOFT paint?

Um..well, it depends on how long it'll take you to draw the backgrounds. If there's camera movement add a whole bunch more time for motion tracking. And if your bluescreen isn't all that great..well, that adds a whole other variable.

yes... microsoft paint... can't spell it without "pain..."

I think it would add a very cheesy albeit charming dimension to the production. All the backgrounds wold look very fake, but I think that it would be kind of nifty.

No. No camera movement. At all.

Bluescreen will be a budget blue screen. AKA tarp and worklights.

Don't use a tarp, it's far too reflective.

Let's see. If you use Paint, by the time you're done, you hand will have fused itself to the mouse.

Getting flourescent green pieces of paper from wallmart is a cheap solution to greenscreening.
And avoid Paint. Look for all other solutions first.

    Okay...

    Any other cheap-but-hopefully-effective alternatives?

Well using paint depends...there're some very talented people with Paint out there. A friend of mine drew this (with a mouse) in Paint:

Throw a Wacom tablet into the mix and you got yourself a cheesy movie on the way :D
