Book: Survivor's Quest by T. Zahn
Date and Time: Saturday, October 25th, 2 to 4pm for Spooktacular and after 4pm (probably around 4:15pm) for book club.
Place: Borders near South Park Mall

    First, book club . . .

We have come to the end of our "year" of Timothy Zahn and his growling dialogue! ;) For those that don't know, recent we sent a Charlotte Fan Force t-shirt to Timothy. Hopefully he is wearing it in good health. [face_dancing]

Our final book is Survivor's Quest:

Description: Sometimes it seems a Jedi's work is never done and Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker know this only too well. Despite the bond they share in the Force, after three years of marriage the Jedi Master and his wife are still learning the ropes of being a couple -- and struggling to find time together between the constant demands of duty. But all that will change when they're united on an unexpected mission -- and must pool their exceptional skills to combat an insidious enemy . . . and salvage a part of Jedi history.

It begins with a message from a surprising source: Nirauan, the planet where Thrawn, dangerous disciple of Emperor Palpatine, once held sway . . . and from which Luke and Mara barely escaped with their lives. The message itself is shocking. After fifty years, the remains of Outbound Flight -- a pioneering Jedi expedition viciously destroyed by Thrawn -- have been found on Nirauan. Now, the fiercely honor-bound aliens who reside there wish to turn over the remnants of the doomed mission to the New Republic. Accepting the gesture will mean a long voyage into the treacherous cluster of stars where the thousands of souls aboard the Outbound Flight vessel met their grim fate. But it may also mean something more . . . something that has stirred an inexplicable sense of foreboding in Mara.

Whatever may await, the Skywalkers will not face it alone. Joining them on the strange and solemn journey are an officer of the post-Palpatine Empire, escorted by a detachment of Imperial stormtroopers; a party of diplomats from a gentle alien species that reveres the fallen Jedi for saving them from bloodthirsty conquerors; and a New Republic ambassador who harbors his own mysterious agenda.

Soon enough, suspicion, secrecy, and an unknown saboteur run rampant aboard the isolated ship. But it is within the derelict walls of Outbound Flight itself, buried for half a century on a desolate planetoid, where the gravest danger lies. As the marooned hulk yields up stunning revelations and unexpected terrors to its visitors, Luke and Mara find all they stand for -- and their very existence -- brutally challenged. And the ultimate test will be surviving the deathtrap carefully laid by foes who are legendary for their ruthlessness . . . and determined to complete the job Thrawn began: exterminating the Jedi.

As we have discussed in the Book Club planning thread the period before the book club meets is a "no spoiler" rule meaning if you post spoilers they must be Highlight-To-Read. Example: This is highlight to read. After the meeting spoilers can be posted without the markup codes.

OK, one of our newest members, Mayhem aka Ed aka our newest parent! has invited us to his store for their Halloween event:

Earlier that day the 501st will be doing a hospital visit to Hemby Hospital. We are going to bring some troopers along to go with us to do an appearance from about 3:30pm to 4:00 pm at the Spooktacular. It would be wonderful [face_batting] [face_batting] [face_batting] [face_batting] [face_batting] if we could have a wrangler who is loud and commanding . . . like me. We want to get the characters from the changing area to the main area of the Spooktacular without being stopped 50 million times. Anyone feeling as assertive as me? ;) [face_mischief]

Or if you just want to come along, bring your kids, etc for fun go ahead. We'd love to have you there.

Mayhem, if you have any additional info please let me know!

The main aim of the Spooktacular at Borders is to entertain kids aged 12 and under. We are planning a costume contest, story time, games and in-store trick-or-treating, music and other activities depending on time and attendance. Some employees will be dressing up, including my General manager and myself (I'm the sales manager there).
Last month we had a kids party that wound up being a hit with close to 40 kids showing up.
Our cafe tries to entertain the parents (and get them to buy stuff of course!).

On a business level its to bring people into stores and help business in these "wonderful" economic days.

The full event is from 2-4pm .
I will be able to provide cold water to keep any costumers hydrated and you will have an area to change/store stuff.
Anyone just wanting to bring your kids along, please do.

Once again, of course Star Wars is not a needed costume since I know some of you do other looks, though I'm sure kids will love the SW ones with CLone Wars being so hot now.

I'm really excited about this because if everyone is willing (including Borders) I'd love to move our book club meetings there and also have the option for folks to preorder books for book club reading. We could still have stuff at Beatties Ford Road Library. They've been good to us. I'd like to do another Star Voyages there. Anyways, just some thoughts.

Mayhem, there are folks in the group who dress up Klingon. If they can make it do you mind? They have great costumes.

As long as Klingons don't scare young children. Remember our age range is 12 and under and the last kids party had more of the younger half (under7).

Just heard back from her . . . no Klingons. :(

Here is just a thought and either I'd have to find my book or if you all have it I could read it. There is a book called "What is a Wookiee?". I've read it before as part of an event we did called Star Voyages: Page Into Science Fiction. Only problem is that if I am in costume I'd need a microphone to be heard probably.

I'm pulling teeth here cause people don't like to do double events and the hospital event is draining emotionally.

But I think I've definitely got myself and Luis as Tuskens, Leia and a stormtrooper.

Sweet, thats cool Jada. Don't need too many especially since it's not a long event. Just hoping to let some of the kids be entertained, especially during the costume contest.

Looking forward to seeing y'all later.
Just ask for me (Ed) when you get there. I will probably be in the kids section and will be the tall guy in the half-@$$ Sith look (black cloak, boots, gloves, shirt. white slacks; black and white face makeup and using half a Maul saber....poor-boy 2 week planned Sith lol)

Alright, alright, I know I didnt show up and I apologize. I had my star wars miniatures tournament today at 1 and couldn't leave to come. I was going to come after but it ended at the same time the Borders event ended. I talked with my mom and she was very thankful for all that came and dressed up. She said it was great for you guys to have come. But...alas... hahahahha... I wasn't there. But I did where my fan force shirt just in case we got done in enough time. Once again, I'm sorry.
