I think Hybrid Network is about the same as Mike Zeroh in that they will make videos about virtually anything regardless of the source or how legitimate it is.

Which is why I stopped watching Mike Zeroh. I stick to channels like Star Wars Theory (even if I don't agree with everything he says) and Star Wars Explained.

Whatever he does, I hope it's his own - as in, "let sleeping KOTORs, Vong Wars, etc. lie," and ... I dunno ... tackle the Nu-Old Republic?

Tl, dr - there's parts of TLJ I like (Rose, porgs, fathiers, Ahch-To as a launching pad for the Jedi) ... and parts I didn't like (quitter!Luke, no-past Rey, shirtless!Kylo).

I have no problem with Nu-Canon mining, and in some cases just 'porting over, pieces of Legends. I've said before that things like the underlying framework of the Essential Atlas and other "skeletal" pieces of the mythos are just ridiculous for Nu-Canon to try and redo/ignore/etc.

Do I think Bane could work? Maybe. TCW actually made me not recoil at how they used Bane there; they'd have to either subtract or otherwise veermock-wrench Ruusan to get it to work (we have no Kyle Katarn, and frankly, divorcing Ruusan from Kyle's arc would upset me).

But the Vong are ... an artifact of their time and place that, removed from the NJO, I think wouldn't translate well. And KOTOR (especially KOTOR I, but II as well), is just too much of a classic to attempt to shoehorn into Nu-Canon.

I think Rian Johnson deserves a chance, free of any opinions of TLJ, to try "his" Star Wars - but let it be his, and not Bad!Redux-Revan or the like.

Because there was a big freak out that his trilogy wouldn't happen tonight, thought I'd just post this in the proper place

Rumours circulated earlier that Rian had left the franchise. A few insiders disputed it, Pablo cracked a joke, and finally Rian showed up to confirm his trilogy's still on, all within about the space of, oh, about an hour.

I wasn't a fan of all of Johnson's decisions in TLJ, in a few cases to a big degree (and not just in terms of content, but I think there are some editing and pacing issues in the movie also) but I also think that Johnson is by far the most creative person to work on the SW movies other than Lucas, and especially of the Disney era (though I think if Lord and Miller could have made their movie, they would be there too).

Johnson is someone who I trust to actually be visionary enough to make a Star Wars series that is actually something new to the franchise while also being part of the franchise. I think he has not only the creativity, but also a breadth of inspiration to draw from that Abrams and Howard (or Treverrow) wouldn't. So while I would have no interest and even less confidence in a fully-original Star Wars movie series from those latter directors, I think this is the perfect Star Wars cinematic arena for Johnson to thrive in, even with (and perhaps especially due to) my critiques of TLJ.

huh I am very surprised to hear that Johnson is still working on his planned trilogy. I don't hate the idea, though I was very disappointed with TLJ.
I have faith that he'd do a decent job with his own characters/story and less pre-established baggage and history to have to deal with.

I am wondering if Johnson is going to be doing something Jedi/Force centric or go full Noir detective story (as most of his movies are, Looper is time travel but the Loopers crew are basically out of the gangster noir playbook) but in a Star Wars setting. The most classic noir vibe he got in TLJ was basically Canto Bight.

Canto Bight was pretty clearly Casablanca, with the rich people idling away in an exotic casino while a giant war engulfs the rest of society. Not to mention Rose's ring being directly taken from Casablanca. It also ties in with the other WWII movie inspirations peppered throughout TLJ (and the OT as well). Though I guess Casablanca itself might have had some noir influences.

Though at least with Brick, I thought I remember Johnson saying his inspirations were Dashiell Hammet's novels rather than any of the movies based on them. Though I think he also cited Cowboy Bebop, funnily enough.

"Noir" wasn't really a thing while it was happening, it was a genre applied retroactively by the French when they had access to American film again after the Nazi occupation ended. Film critics in France were surprised by how much American film had changed during the war, how much darker the subject matter was compared to what they were accustomed to coming out of the states before the war.

According to Johnson, he's starting work on his Star Wars trilogy after his current movie, Knives Out (which comes out this November).

So are these going to be the Johnson films or the Benioff/Weiss films? Or both?

No idea, though based on this, it seems to follow the ST formula of one movie every two years.

I'm wondering what the over/under is on when we'll start seeing "Obi-Wan standalone in 2022" rumors.

So long as they jettison the rest of the "ST Formula" namely that the books, comics, animation, audio and games can't do anything, it'll work fine.

"We're still making it/it's not canceled" updates really only have weight when they come from EA.

To be fair, Kathleen Kennedy said at Celebration that Rian, Benioff, and Weiss were busy planning the next decade of Star Wars films...and now we get release dates for three of 'em. So that's something, I guess.
