The whole thing was not right. What was described was a rough night for Chicago, for a small town like Candlewood it had to be close to chaos. Two missing people, one of which wife to the highest administrative leader of their small town. Then a shooter, basically killing more people in a matter of minutes then there what ever been killed by homicide in the region in the last fifty years. If this was connected, it was also escalating.

"Who leads the operation? Carver? Or do you take lead Agent Barclay?" He knew he was the senior agent and same rank than Barclay, but the other man was obviously informed on the cornerstones of the issues awaiting them. Also he seemed to emanate a bit of a lone wolf feeling.

OOC: With feedback and approval from SirakRomar:

    IC: Sheriff Jack Collins

    Cabin, The Brownback Hills

The ominous tapping from above ceased almost as suddenly as it had begun, but the Sheriff knew better than to think that the Beast had fled. More than likely it was up there biding its time, waiting for them to make a crucial mistake so that it could pounce. He had to give Michaels credit for that one – it certainly seemed intelligent to even consider such a ploy. The idea of some alien creature breaking into their world from a distant realm had sounded ludicrous at the time...but slowly, he was beginning to believe it. Jack only hoped that it wasn’t competent enough to see through his plan.

With the flashlight poised in the hand with the injured wrist, Jack fumbled with the latch securing the trapdoor in place, trying to get his fingers underneath the rusted metal to pop it open. Unfortunately, it didn’t want to give so easily due to age and apparent lack of use. He would need more leverage, and with a wince to anticipate the pain, he cradled the flashlight between his neck and shoulder and began to use both hands despite his injury.

“Whatever you do, let us do it fast,” he heard the girl utter from behind, fear clearly driving her words.

“I’m doing--augh!” he pulled back marginally after his hand slipped along the edge, drawing a trail of blood across his palm, “...my best.” Anger flared at the fresh wound, and sitting back on his haunches, he opted to go another route. Reaching across for the rifle, Jack turned it on its end and slammed the stock into the stubborn latch. Once. Twice. On the third try, the brittle metal snapped and the door released.

Without hesitation, Jack brought the flashlight back into his grip and leaned forward to investigate the opening. A musty, earthy smell immediately assaulted his senses as he shone the light around the fairly wide crater, taking note that it appeared as if someone had carved a vast tunnel directly into the earth. It twisted down into the darkness, fading off to the north. At this point, it was hard to say how long or how big the passage truly was, but given its size – a human could pass through there easily – it remained their only means of escape.

Sitting back with some satisfaction, the Sheriff sighed and turned to the others. His eyes fell to Miles first, acknowledging him with a subtle nod. “Grab Michaels’ equipment bag and anything else you can find around the room,” he directed in an authoritative tone. “Rope, utensils, tools...anything you find useful. I have a feeling we may need them.”

Slinging the rifle across his back, Jack inched closer to the opening so that his legs now dangled over the precipice, and then turned to address the young woman last. “Laura, honey, I need you to follow right behind me,” he continued with a small smile to reassure her. “Step where I step, and Miles will bring up the rear. Do you understand?” He shrugged lightly, trying to build up his own confidence. “We’ll get through this, ok?”

Inhaling deeply, the Sheriff pushed himself forward and slipped into the darkness with flashlight in hand.

    Somewhere, not in Candlewood

Julia's pleas were not heard. The sound grew so load she had to cover her ears and close her eyes. Then there was silence.

When Julia opened her eyes, she was somewhere else. It certainly wasn't Candlewood.

And she was not alone ...

Anna looked at John for a long moment and she obviously was considering the situation. Her colleague was accused of assisting in murder here, after all.

"We cannot rule out he did this without knowing of the plan to kill her or they got this from somewhere else." She said and then swallowed. "But I agree it looks bad."

She leaned against the wall and rubbed her forehead. "God, how did all of this happen? I mean ... Ethan." Shaking her head she looked at John and then nodded.

"Julia. His wife. If anybody knows about anything it is her. She was Jane's best friend. She would never have helped him. But she could have seen things that made no sense out of context ... you should talk to Julia and I should go to the Major's home. Not good to leave Ethan alone there. It is another missing person case, after all." She sighed. "You probably find her in the local bookstore. The Bookworm."

    The Cabin in the Woods

Laura grabbed Michael's backpack and the first aid kit. Then she returned to the Sheriff ready to follow his orders to the word. Her eyes showed her fear, her body wasn't only trembling from the cold.

Jack slided down and found himself in the dark of the underground.

    Helicopter, Coast Line

"Senior Agent, as we lack any chain of command, that would be you Monroe." Barclay said and turned to the window as they approached the beautiful and small coastal town of Candlewood.

Farlow was the first to point out what they probably all would realize. "Damned quiet for a town in their situation." There was actually nobody to be seen. The streets were empty. And even as their helicopter began it's approach to land in front of the local café on a small plaza near the harbor ... nobody came to watch. There was no sign of anybody actually.

    Michael's Fishing Shop

Julia's head snapped back with a forceful move it looked as if she tried to break it. Then it slowly rolled around until it returned to it's natural position.

Her eyes opened and she looked around as if she was wondering where she was. Finally her eyes fell on the papers and a hint of a smile appeared on her mouth.

"Aaaah ... aaaah ..." She talked as if she had suffered a stroke, fighting for her words. "I think that concludes our business." She finally said and turned to leave, leaving the papers on the table.

    Helicopter, Coast Line

Agent Monroe had asked about who was going to be leading this particular operation, and Agent Barclay confirmed that it would be Monroe himself. Malorie thought as much, he was the most senior agent here after all. Out of all of the agents, she surmised that she was the agent who had the least time in active service. It would be seven years next month, but to a small contingent of long serving agents she might as well have still been a rookie.

She glanced out of the window and her gaze fell upon the beautiful coastal landscape of Candlewood. As the helicopter started its descent to approach their landing zone, Farlow also looked out of the window. "Damned quiet for a town in their situation." he said as he looked outward. Malorie's brow furrowed slightly as she brought her attention to the streets below. The streets were empty. There were no vehicles moving around the roads, No one was working the harbour or enjoying the many amenities that came with the popular tourist spot. it was like a ghost town.

"Maybe word has gotten out about the shooting, and people are staying indoors for their safety" She replied, her voice coming through slightly tinny through the headsets earphones. "We know there was at least one shooter in the town hall, but what if there are more prowling the town?" The helicopter pilot was starting to bring the aircraft down towards a makeshift landing zone within a plaza near the harbour. She glanced at her kit bag which contained her ballistics vest before looking at agent Monroe "Agent Monroe. May I suggest we kit up properly before disembarking the helicopter."

    ?????

Rather than dissipating, the sound got worse until, out of desperation, Julia covered her ears and screwed her eyes shut, trying to block out the deafening noise.

When she opened her eyes again, she immediately knew that something was terribly wrong.

She was no longer in Michael's shop, or anywhere she recognized. This place was dark and barren-looking, and what the hell is THAT?!

    Where the hell am I?

    Approaching Candlewood

Farlow had a point. There was not a soul outside. The weather was fine, there was no sign of danger or evacuation.

Dunn brought up the theory of a second shooter. Carl gave her a look. "No, after a shooting there is a heightened awareness about gun and violence. Statistically two shooters never show up in the same region in such a short timeframe." He sighed and looked at Barclay. "Then it's me. Dunn, you are right about kit up. Better save than sorry. Vests, no big guns. But Farlow keep that MP-5 of yours nearby."

He still kept on looking to see at least one living being. Even if only at the windows as they prepared for landing.

"Pilot, get us down there next to the cafe." Carl informed their pilot. "Dunn, Barclay, you go to the cafe and get a picture from the locals there. Farlow you secure the landing spot. Once we touch down I try to get in touch with Agent Carver to tell him the cavalry is here."

Carl sighed as he removed his jacket to get on his vest. "Remember, terrorism is about terror and that is Latin for fear. They wanna scare people. So we gotta give them some confidence and feeling of control back."

    James Power
    Home

After opening the door, Ethan threw jumped in front of the Mayor, who couldn't help bit choke on his own words as the discussion they were having came to an abrupt close.
Feeling faint James was left frozen in terror, not truly understanding what he was seeing.
"Max?" He whispered in a horse tone, though with no evidence to back it up. His wife was missing, now his son could be in danger too. This was their house, their life, he couldn't bare the thought that something had happened.

It took a moment for him to balance his demand for answers with the logic presented by the Deputy.
James was unarmed, if there was a threat in his home Ethan would be better equipped to deal with it.
Still he had to physically restrain himself from leaping forward to look.

Forcing his eyes closed, James was overwhelmed briefly. "Maybe you should call backup?" He managed to speak to Ethan, still somewhat catatonic as he was unsure what to think.
All he could do was cling to a subtle ray of hope, maybe the blood wasn't from anyone he knew? Maybe a burglar broke in, and Max defended himself? A chance perhaps, but not one he liked the odds of.

    IC: Sheriff Jack Collins
    Underground tunnel, The Brownback Hills

The soft thud of Jack’s boots hitting the ground echoed lightly down the underground passage when he landed. Dirt and dust particles began to dance wildly in front of the flashlight beam with the disturbance, giving the tunnel itself an almost dream-like quality with the scintillating patterns serving as the grand reveal. But upon closer inspection, he noted that it was actually pretty drab; tree roots invaded the space unbidden, weaving across the ceiling and pushing up from the ground to create hazardous pitfalls along the main path; vines and other plant life thrived in the moist air, giving the enclosed space a putrid smell that reminded Jack of mold or mildew. Overall, it wasn’t a very pleasant sight, and he couldn’t help but curl up his nose in disgust. He would have never considered coming down here under normal circumstances, but they were far beyond the realm of normal. This could very well be their only hope for escape.

With a wary sigh, he angled the flashlight around the area to get a better look at the seemingly endless shaft leading off into the distance. Naturally, his mind began to wander: What had been the purpose of such a tunnel? When had it been built? And where did it ultimately lead?

I’m sure we’re about to find out, he thought dryly.

Turning back to the opening he had just come through, he glanced up to see Laura beginning to make her descent. A slight frown crossed his features as her feet slipped through and dangled in mid-air. While he was no expert himself – hell, he had given Michaels a hard time just to reach this point – the young woman seemed even more out of her element, clumsy and scared. Both were a recipe for disaster.

Setting the flashlight down on the ground and shrugging the rifle further back on his shoulder, he positioned himself beneath her and spread his arms, anticipating her to fall. “Easy, Laura,” he called gently, his voice somewhat strained, “I’m right here...just listen to the sound of my voice.” He nodded slowly. “You can do this.”

The helicopter touched down and Farlow grabbed his black sports back and put his FBI Cap on before jumping out first. Barclays followed, then the other two.

Nobody came to greet them, nobody was lurking from a window. The city looked ... empty.

"Let's check the Cafe." Barclay said to Dunn and made his way there. The Ocean View Café it was called and already as they approached it, it was obvious that it was empty. As they entered they saw coffee cups and half eaten cake still on the tables. Barely pinched his finger into the coffee of the nearest cup. "Cold." He said and looked around. "Nothing broken or any sign of panic, but they did not even finish their coffees before leaving?"

On the counter Malorie found three to-go cups. They were all cold, too.

Outside Carl got the Mailbox of Agent Carver only. At the local police station nobody picked up.

"Where are they all gone to?" Farlow asked and stepped to his partners. "The place is creeping me out." He sighed and now opened his sports bag and got his MP-5 submachine gun out.

    Somewhere, not in Candlewood

The thing floated through the air as if gravity was not existing for it. Far away Julia could see more of these things, glowing red in what appeared to be a barren and moonless place. Julia had no perception of temperature or even air. Actually she was not breathing.

"Oh Julia, it got you again, did it?" The voice was Jane's coming from behind her. When Julia turned her friend stood right behind her, pale and with dark rings around her eyes. "I am so sorry." Jane smiled sadly. "So very sorry."

    Helicopter, Coast Line/Ocean View Cafe

As the helicopter made its final manoeuvres to land upon the plaza, Malorie kitted up, Shrugging off her blazer and replacing it with her ballistics vest. The white letters that made up the acronym FBI stood out sharply against the vests black material. Putting on her cap, she pulled her short ponytail through the loop at the back, before doing a check of her radio. Finally she did a quick check of her sidearm, before replacing it back into the holster at her hip. Once safely landed, Farlow disembarked first, the rest of the agents following close behind.

Malorie looked around at the deserted streets. Now they were ground-side the sense of…emptiness, for lack of a better word felt all the more prevalent. It was unsettling. “Where is everyone?” She mused inwardly.

"Let's check the Cafe." Barclay’s words pulled her out of thoughts and she followed him across the plaza, leaving Agents Monroe and Farlow by the helicopter. The sign read “The Ocean View Café”. She could tell it was empty as soon as they got close enough. Following Barclay through the door, she scanned the room. As expected it was empty, but there were half eaten meals and half consumed drinks and coffees upon many of the tables. This was a popular establishment, going from the amount of abandoned foodstuffs. A hub of the community, So what happened to the clientele?

She watched as Barclay pinched his finger into the coffee of the nearest cup. "Cold." He said and looked around. "Nothing broken or any sign of panic, but they did not even finish their coffees before leaving?" Malorie agreed. If something untoward had happened in here the room wouldn’t look so…normal. Overturned furniture, broken crockery, obvious signs of a struggle, those are the sort of things you’d expect. But there was none of that here. She made her way towards the counter and noticed three take away cups. Checking the contents, she realised these were stone cold as well. She couldn’t see any signs of the half eaten food going mouldy. It had probably only been served recently.

She clicked her tongue and turned back to her fellow agent. Reiterating his own observations.
“No signs of struggle, no signs of panic or fleeing… just gone” She paused for a beat and shook her head lightly “People don’t just vanish into thin air, so where did everyone go?” She glanced around once more, but her gaze went upwards towards the ceiling and tops of the walls. "Think this place has security cameras?"

John smiled at the mention of Julia Wilson. "Yeah, I know the place. Good point about the Major's wife. Please go there. But be discrete. The last thing we want is him to make a run. We don't have the people for a manhunt."

He smiled at her and walked out, making his way to the Bookworm. He still had the Doctor in a few hours and they had to take care of Croft. Hopefully the reinforcement would be here soon.

Michael saw her head twist and stepped back. He knew what he was witnessing. He had seen it before, so many years ago.

He could not help but stare as the thing before him tried to speak and then suddenly found it's voice and announced to leave. It had transformed in front of her eyes into Julia Wilson. It did a bad job at imitating her though, leaving the papers.

"Have we met before?" Michael asked and got around his counter his baseball bat now in his hand. "Or are you knew here?"

He took a few quick steps to position himself between the Julia-thing and the door.

It looked at him for a long moment and then it gave him a smile that did not look the slightest bit like one Julia would give him.

"You have grown old. Michael." She ... it lay it's head aside. "That is your name, is it? Michael?"

He stumbled back, his worst fears confirmed. Without another word he raised the bat and hit the thing on the head, sending the fragile body it occupied on the floor.

It remained there. Then it laughed out loud and looked up. "I forgot how sensitive those bodies are. Pain. Such a marvelous sensation." She grinned as she looked up at him and he stood over her and his hands shaking slowly raised his weapon.

    Michael's Fishing Shop

John passed the shops between the busy Ocean View Café and the Bookworm on the sunny day. Nothing hinted at first sight at the terror this town had endured. The peace after a violent outbreak was often disturbing.

Then he heard a scream and a young woman ran away. "Help, somebody help her!"

She was coming from a fishermen equipment shop John had passed every day since he had arrived here. He saw a man with a baseball bat inside raising it to swing it down at ... someone. A woman on her knees right in front of him.

    The Cabin in the Woods

Laura jumped down after the Sheriff and looked around. "This looks ancient." She whispered and looked up to Miles to follow.

Mike's was the last to enter and just as he was probably about to do so something hit the roof of the cabin. Above a black chitinous spike had drilled a hole into the roof. It was almost a feed long and slowly withdrew from the roof. The clacking steps were heard above. A second hole was ripped into the roof. Again the spike.

    Power House

Ethan took in a deep breath and took his expandable baton into both hands. Slowly he followed the blood trail and stopped at the kitchen. He listened for a moment and then dived into the room.

"Oh my God." The words escaped his mouth and the Major saw him stumble out of the kitchen again. He slowly turned to the Major and then whispered with a weak voice ...

    "I am so sorry!"

Barclay looked at the ceiling, but then shook his head. "They virtually got no crime here. Doubts the install CCTV." He sighed. Looking around he seemed not as surprised by the scene as Malorie was.

He almost jumped up though when the phone rang. It was right next to Malorie and the answering machine activated after the first ring. "This is Chloe. Chloe Barnett. Where are you guys? Where is everybody? Please if anyone is there just pick up the phone. I ... everybody is gone ..."

"Chloe Barnett. You talk to her and I check." Barclay said with a sigh and got out his mini-pad. He chuckled a bit, as he realized he had perfect wifi.

Beneath the cabin in the woods

Miles watched as Laura had finally eased herself down into the tunnel beneath the cabin, the deputy's backpack strapped to her back. But before he could make the descent himself, there was a loud thud above coming from the roof. Instinctively, he looked up, and watched aghast as some kind of spiked skeletal appendage pierced the ceiling of the cabin, receded, and pressed through again.

"****." Not wanting to stick around any longer, Miles looked down into the hole to make sure the sheriff and Laura were out of the way. He knelt down and grabbed the handle of the trapdoor and eased himself down into the hole, shutting the door above him with the hope that the creature wouldn't notice their escape route. At the very least, he hoped it'd buy them at least a little bit of time.

His feet hit the ground and Miles found himself grateful for his new pair of shoes as he felt the twigs crunch underneath. The tunnel beneath the earth had an ominous air about it, but nothing so frightening as what would have awaited them had they remained above. The sheriff held their only source of light in his hand, along with the rifle, and Laura held the backpack of supplies and the first aid kit. Miles, well, he had a couple free hands if they needed them. For now, there was only one thing to do.

    "Let's go," he said.

"They virtually got no crime here. Doubts the install CCTV." Barclay replied after conducting his own brief investigation of the room. Malorie nodded in agreement to no one in particular as she turned to look back at him. It didn't seem that the senior agent was feeling the same level of Heebie Jeebies that she was feeling about this whole situation. She was about to reply, when the eerie silence was abruptly shattered by the sudden ringing of a phone on the counter. Agent Barclay barely managed to contain a startled jump, and Malorie's heart felt like it jumped up into her throat. One ring and the phone clicked over to voicemail. A young woman's voice filled the room.

"This is Chloe. Chloe Barnett. Where are you guys? Where is everybody? Please if anyone is there just pick up the phone. I ... everybody is gone ..."

The poor girl sounded terrified, but her words also all but confirmed that the abandoned cafe wasn't an isolated incident. Everyone in the town was really gone? But how? And why was this one young lady supposedly the only one left? "Chloe Barnett. You talk to her and I check." Barclay said with a sigh as he pulled out a mini pad tablet. Malorie blew out a small breath and reached for the receiver, picking it up and bringing it up to her ear.

"Hello? Chloe?" She began "My name is Agent Malorie Dunn of the FBI, are you still there?" She paused briefly to allow the girl to register her words, "Are you OK honey? Talk to me. Were here to help"

Farlow had a point. This was not what it was supposed to be. Bit every mystery had a solution. "Maybe Aliens Kidnapper them. Got Mulders number?" He smiled at Farlow and after Carver tried the police station. Nobody picked up. He had the feeling he could call any number around here and nobody would pick up anyway.

"Okay. We seem to have a few more missing persons here. Listen, there is an explanation and we need to know what it is. Go to the police station. According to our map it is not that far away. Check it and if nobody is there ... get every police file they got, every audio tape and every note they did the last 48 hours. Okay?" Carl took out his gun now and sighed. "We set up base right there in the coffee shop." He started walking over to the other two FBI agents and nodded to Farlow. "Be careful and report every five minutes. Alright?"

Signaling the chopper to take off he walked over to the Ocean View Café.

What the hell was going on here? In a small town free of any noteworthy crime suddenly everybody turned violent.

The man was about to kill the woman ... and John realized it wasn't any woman. It was Julia Wilson, the woman he was looking for.

His hands grabbed the gun he had taken from England's room and pulled the lever down to arm it. Through the closed door he could not shout, so he had to get the attackers attention the hard way. He fired two shots at the glass of the door dividing him from them and then aimed at the elder man with the baseball bat.

"FBI, drop the weapon! Now!" He yelled and took aim. He hoped he wouldn't have to shoot.

He considered for a moment to risk hitting the thing once more. But there was no guarantee it would kill it. Even if it did ... it would return.

"This is not Julia Wilson!" He shouted and dropped the bat. "I know it sounds crazy, but she is not. Something is in there and it has taken control! She heard the whispers! Instantly the Mayor collapsed to his knees, and let out a sob. This could not be true, it can not be true.
James refused to believe it, even as he held his hand over his heart. Why? Who would do this?
Croft couldn't have learned about his betrayal so quickly.
So, if it was him, then it was apparent that he never intended to play fair.

Shakely he looked up at the Deputy. "Tell it to me strait Ethan. What happened?"

    ???

She was trying to get her bearings, but the dead landscape stretched on as far as she could see in any direction, and there were more of the bizarre floating objects in the distance. They looked like giant insects, though she obviously had no clue what they actually were. They emitted an eerie red glow that seemed to be the only light source; there was no moon here, and no sun.

Actually, despite the lack of sun, Julia noticed that it didn’t seem cold here, nor did it seem hot. There was no wind, no smell—

    She wasn’t breathing.

"Oh Julia, it got you again, did it?" A familiar voice drew her attention, and she turned to find Jane behind her, her complexion pale and heavy dark circles around her eyes. "I am so sorry." Jane smiled sadly. "So very sorry."

Julia had a very bad feeling about what had happened, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to hear Jane confirm it, but she needed to know. “Jane…what is going on?”

    Michael's Fishing Shop

Slowly Julia raised to her feet and smiled at Michael, standing behind John so he could not see her. "He attacked me! For no reason he started beating me, Sir!" She said with a helpless voice.

Her eyes stayed on Michael as she stretched her neck. "He is insane!"

    The Cabin in the Woods

The tunnel was dark and wet. The ground was slippery. But it lead away from the house from where they could hear the ceiling crashing down now.

"It is big. I think. It might not fit through the trap-door." Julia's whispered words sounded more like a hopeful wish than an accurate analysis.

Then, as they stumbled down the path deeper into the hills the tunnel grew broader. Roots of ancient trees sometimes blocked their way and they had to climb around them.

    Power House

Ethan looked at him and then back to the kitchen. "It is Grace." He said. "She was murdered." Slowly he swallowed and then turned to the Major. "Why ... why has she written your name on the floor, Major?" He then asked and slowly turned to the man.

    Ocean View Café, Candlewood

Barclay was typing into his mobile, as he stepped over to Malorie. Carl was entering the Café and saw the same scene of a seemingly sudden disappearance that his two colleagues had found.

"FBI?" The woman on the other side finally said after a long pause. "This is Chloe Barnett. I ... there is nobody here. Not in the houses and not in the shops. My brother, he is gone too. I ... I don't know what happened here!" She was obviously terrified. "Where are they all gone to?" She started crying. Barclay turned his mobile and showed Malorie a picture of Chloe Barnett from a police file. She had been a witness of a murder case ten years ago. She had to be 27 by now. "Tell her to come here. Quickly." Barclay whispered and looked at Carl.

    Somewhere

"It has taken over your body." Jane said, not wasting any more time with riddles. "It has taken over you, because my body is dead now." Jane said. Slowly she shook her head.

And then there was noise echoing over the planes. It was loud and filled the air. Julia knew it all to well. The sound as if ... something was gnawing on bones. And it came from the floating objects.

    Streets

John gave Julia a short look and then looked back to the attacker. Try her.

Did he truly consider to take the delusions of this man serious? He had half a dozen dead and a spreading problem. Could he afford not to follow any lead? Would he not regret if he didn't?

"Julia, what was the book I bought last time I was at your shop?" He asked and taking a step back he moved to a position where he could see her, too. "The book you recommended?"

"FBI?"..."This is Chloe Barnett. I ... there is nobody here. Not in the houses and not in the shops. My brother, he is gone too. I ... I don't know what happened here!...Where are they all gone to?"

Malorie could hear Chloe's sobs through the phone, and she felt a pang of worry for the woman as she turned round to look at Agent Barclay. He held his phone out so that she could see the screen. It showed a photo of Chloe, albeit quite a few years younger. Malorie could tell that the photo came from a police case file, and as her green-grey eyes quickly scanned the screen she started to notice key information related to the woman at the other end of the phone. "Witness in a murder case?" She thought to herself before Barclay's whispered words brought her attention back to the immediate task at hand "Tell her to come here. Quickly." he said before turning at the sound of the cafe door opening. Agent Monroe entered the room. She gave the senior agent a short nod of acknowledgement before turning away again.

"Chloe, I know it's hard but you need to stay calm ok? Can you safely get to this cafe? If you can get here, tell us anything you know...we may be able to help you find out what happened to your brother, and everyone else."

    IC: Sheriff Jack Collins
    Underground tunnel, The Brownback Hills

Several crashes came from behind, announcing the Beast’s insatiable fury. The ominous sound echoed off the hollow walls, accompanied by the splintering and snapping of wood as they pushed deeper into the subterranean tunnel. Even at this distance, it was easy to discern the cabin’s destruction, the Beast seemingly tearing through the weathered roof as if it was covered in a layer of tissue paper. That thought roused the Sheriff’s morbid curiosity, and for a fleeting moment, he felt compelled to stop and witness the spectacle for himself...but his rational mind soon brought him back to his senses. Any such delay could mean life and death, especially under the circumstances. And so, he carried on with his gaze focused straight ahead and his lips pressed together firmly.

At his side, he sensed Laura shuffling uneasily. "It is big...I think,” she whispered under her breath, almost as if she was trying to convince herself of what was about to happen. “It might not fit through the trap-door."

Jack inclined his head marginally and glanced at the girl out of his peripheral vision. She appeared scared, but determined. It may take some convincing to get her to act, but he was starting to think that she might be okay. “No, we should be alright,” he agreed with a small sigh, his eyes shifting back to gaze at Miles. Much like Laura, the young man was lucky to have escaped when he did. If he would've lingered a second longer, the Beast would've impaled him with one of his deadly thrusts.

“I don’t know how smart It is, but Miles secured the door,” he continued with a small approving nod to the young man. “If It doesn’t waste time trying to figure out what happened to us, digging a hole big enough to fit its large frame through that opening certainly will. Even then, It might not fit in these tunnels. We bought ourselves some time...for now, at least.”

Sure enough, as they carried on, that sentiment began to change. The passageway continued to grow wider until they were practically standing in the center of a yawning cavern. Jack shuffled to a halt and frowned at the looming sight, seemingly troubled by the ramifications. Slowly, he panned the flashlight over the area to take in all of the structural details.

“I don’t think this is man-made,” he surmised flatly before stepping forward cautiously.
