I haven't read everything so I don't know if somebody already said this. But 3DWin5 from Reingold 3D is an excellent free converting program that works with several different formats and doesn't have any limitations.

Max 8 can open any versions below, and it can also import the .3ds files

    and it's Model not Modle

Does anybody know of a way to convert max files to obj or something more widely compatable? I do not own 3Dsmax, so if that's the only way can someone with the program convert some files for me?

I think you could open them in blender and export them as maya object file (.obj)

    I think....

    never done it myself....

Hey guys i have a question

I have the PLE of Maya and the trial version of max, im going to be getting the full version of maya soon but my trial version of max expires in a few days.

I want to convert some of the max files into something that will go into full version of maya, like OBJ i think

Basically what ive done is open the model in max, export as OBJ....now if i imported this file into the full version of maya would it go in alright? Is there any certain options i need to select in the export options window?

I cant test it because i dont have the full version of maya and my trial of max will expire soon so im running out of time.

So yeah does anyone know if that will work.
Sorry if im totally wrong but i have no clue at all how to convert for maya properly.
Guess ill have to wait until i have the full version to see if it will work

    cheers

If you have an earlier version of Max (Max 8) it has the .fbx format installed, it's better than .obj so if you can try converting to that then that would be better. If not, just remember to have it set to convert to quads in the .obj export settings so that the topology will work better.

ok i think i have the trial for max 9.
    1. So i can just import the .fbx into full maya? It wont open in the PLE but thats probably just a limitation of this version.

    2. and just another quick question, will the textures appear in maya like they do in max, do i need to select 'Use materials' and 'create material library' when exporting?

    3. I think i exported some of the max models into OBJ with triangles selected, will they turn out horribly?

Sorry for more nooby questions but i really appreciate the help guys

    cheers,

I don't think it will turn out horribly but it would be better to use quads because that's what Maya uses. And yes, make sure to have it export the material library. It won't look like it will in Max most likely unless it's a rather simple material, but it should have the colors and basic texture maps included. Maya should have the .fbx as an import option, but 3ds Max 9 doesn't have FBX installed by default and I don't think they've released a download of it yet.

Ok cool thanks for the help.
So max cant open .fbx but its still alright to export them right?
should i click export to ASCII format in the .fbx export window?

and also when i export as .obj i select "use materials", "create materials library", change to "quads" and then in the next window my source is 'scene materials' or am i supposed to select "material library"?

Sorry for all the questions i just want to be really sure because my trial expires tonight

    cheers

Max can import them, although my copy of Max 9 doesn't have .fbx anywhere which Max 8 did. I would say ASCII is fine. And yes, select "use materials' and "create materials library" and switch to quads when you export, it will create the .obj file and a .mtl file which is the material library, I would say your source is 'scene materials' because that seems more like it takes all of the materials being used rather than just what's in the material library so that's good.

I use a program called 3D Object Converter 3.80, which can convert many different file types including .lwo, .obj, .3ds.
Here's a link to the program:

    [link=http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/3D_Object_Converter/1066809094/1][/link]

In order to convert between all of them you need a special patch. I have it, but I don't remember where I got it from. So if you need it, you can e-mail me at andrewmichael5@hotmail.com and I'll be able to send it to you with details on how to install it. IF YOU E-MAIL ME PLEASE TITLE YOUR SUBJECT LINE AS: conversionhelp

just so I know who it is and I don't blow off the e-mail thinking it's junk.:D

Hello. I am making a macbeth fanfilm for english, and I need the tantive IV interior converted to .3ds. Please and thank you.

EDIT:editing at 6 minutes left is nice. Nevermind, I dont need the conversion. It seems that I could import the model, I thought it was in a different format then what it really was.

    Hi,
I'm looking for someone who can convert any of the following file formats into something that can be used in Lightwave (.OBJ, .LOW, .3DS):

    .SAT
    .STEP
    .U3D
    .3dxml
    .X_b
    .IGS
    .x_t

I'll gladly pay for the service, but need to know ASAP:
    mdurwin@fuseideas.com

If I'm using the wrong posting would someone tell me which is appropriate without flaming me? Thanks!

    Hi

If you want to convert between LWO and 3DS, then Pipeline3D from www.kalsaya.com can do this and it's pretty darn cheap compared to similar software. It also does other formats.

There is a very inexpensive conversion software at www.kalsaya.com called Pipeline3D. It converts LWO to 3DS.
