Okay, so from now on I'll be the personal cocoa fetcher for ale. [face_dancing] [face_coffee] :D
Not mentioning that I'll of course try to get him over to chococino.[face_mischief]
Let's see how long it takes for me to vanish. *looks down at herself* Well, that will take some doing.:p Anyway, I love sacrcasm and though I can't sing the songs listed, I'm word perfect on some Metallica or Manowar.

Ooh the survey. let's do that.[face_batting]

Well... do you still want to be on the list, ale? Sorry about being slow on the uptake. :p

And speaking of that, General Announcement for the Creche:

I have fall break next week![face_dancing] I'll be in the Midwest wilderness (aka plains plains and more plains :p) from Wednesday, Oct. 10 until Sunday, Oct. 14. Lists won't be updated during that time.

You may now go about your regularly scheduled lives. :)

You can put me on the list C_M, in case any others have the intestinal fortitude to deal with me...:p

Lists are updated. Also, I edited the writing prompt so that it now runs indefinitely. :)

And.... new discussion topic: My Master has Disappeared! What should I do?

Once upon a time there was a happy Master/Padawan team. They worked together well, and the Master felt the Padawan was a fine writer, while the Padawan while the Master was appropriately challenging him. Then, the evil Darth Real Life came along and swept away the noble Master. What should the Padawan do? Has it happened to others, and if so, what are their stories? What would you do in that situation?

Heh. Well... Elana hasn't been on much for a while, but then, we were a relatively hands-off pair. This isn't a criticism -- she was pretty much exactly what I was looking for! A bit hesitantly, I'm assuming I was Knighted by default. *glances down* Not that my sig reflected this for a long time....

Well, when GAV left, I mailed her.
then I mailed her again, and when I got no answer both times, I backed off. Didn't want to intrude on somebody who didn't want to talk to me anymore.
It felt kinda weird, because I never really got to know the reason she left.

    *shrug*

I moved on, not happy about it, but what was I to do?:(

I have a fairly intermittent relationship with my Master. She's inactive for quite long periods of time, and then bursts back into life every few months or so, at which time we briefly exchange 'what have you been up to?' PMs. Kind of like distant relatives or something.

I don't really begrudge the situation, as I find myself pretty majorly inactive when it comes to writing these days as well. And I don't care that much about knighting, I've become quite fond of the bottom line of sig by now. Plus the braid makes me look like Ewan McGregor. Score! :D

Oh, dear--I do feel I should say that Elana told me why she wasn't able to pay as much attention to fandom for a while. I imagine if you're in less sporadic contact and just get sudden radio silence it would be fairly disconcerting.

If the master just drops off, after you've sent a couple PMs/emails and waited 2-4 weeks, IMO tell the Creche master you want to be up for adoption again (assuming you do). Also, tell the master you're doing this.

I never had a master, but I've had about a million padawans drop off for various DRL reasons. Sadly, it happens :(

My master isn't around anymore, and we've kind of lost contact, but a lot of my writing influences came from other people on here (I guess you could say I had around 5 or 6 "masters") :p, so I kinda "knighted" myself tentatively.

That being said, I've been around for a little while now, and I definitely know my way around the boards... how do you know if you're ready to be a master?

The disappearance of my Master took my by surprise because we'd only been working together for about a month. I'd gone off on holiday, which I told her, and when I got back I sent a PM that up until this day hasn't been read. At first, I thought she too was on holiday, but that was in the middle of June and she hasn't logged in since.

It's a shame, because we really did work well together. She helped me with exactly the stuff I needed help with and was in every way to Master I had looked for. That's why I've been somewhat reluctant to look for a new master, partly because of the "back to square one" feeling and partly because I still hope that my Master will eventually come back. Still, the month we worked together was really intense and I learnt a lot of useful stuff which I've used later on.

So yeah, that's what I did when my Master disappeared: got my head down and just did the work I wanted to do, applying what I learnt to the process. Of course, it's different from person to person, but I think this way has worked best for me.

So, does that make me some kind of pseudo-knight? :p

I've actually got two official Masters because of this, as stated in my sig. My original Master KrystalBlaze and I talked for a few months, and then DRL hit her hard, and she couldn't be on the Boards much. Knowing it wasn't her fault but feeling sort of stranded as it was, I drifted around and sort of did my own thing for a little while before befriending Charmisjess, an author I'd admired for a long time. When I mentioned that my Master was MIA, she adopted me, which was very cool. I learned a ton from Krystal while she was still around, and I'm continuing to learn from Charmisjess. Though they're very different teachers, I'm grateful to them both.

Just go for it! If you're willing to help a padawan, and know a fair deal yourself, that's all you need. Just have the free-time to do it *thumbs up*:)

Ish has always been here, so with me, it's kind of worked the other way around. The Padawan got kidnapped by a gang of angry mimes and disappeared off of the face of the boards. :p Well... actually, it was DRL, but you get the point. :p Lucky for me, she's always been here when I come back after a few months. I've never been in the position of feeling stranded. :)

I agree with G__Anakin. If you feel comfortable with your writing skills and know your way around the boards pretty well, go ahead and throw your name into the Masters' ring. :D

As for missing Masters, I would say that it's up to you. There's no Knighting brigade that's going to haunt your threads because you weren't properly knighted by your AWOL Masters. :p Though that could probably be arranged if you really want. [face_laugh] I would also say that if you've sent your former Master one or two PMs and given them a reasonable amount of time to read them and respond, you ought to look into a new master if you're interested.

Nothing official, but if your master disappears and you can't get in touch with them, I'd wait a few weeks to see if they reappear. If not, and you really want a new Master, then I suppose you could ask for a new one. :)

I second Idri: don't just jump into it, wait for a few weeks to make sure the master is really gone.

Ant, you should be a master when you feel like you know fanfic inside and out and can answer most or all questions that a padawan could ask. Obviously nobody knows everything (I've been here 5 years and sometimes still ask the mods questions) but a lot of times I see relatively new people become masters. Maybe that works for them, maybe it's too soon, but IMO you should wait a few weeks or months if you're unsure, grow as a writer and make sure you know most of the ins and outs, and then go for it when you feel confidant. I think you've probably been here long enough to know wht you're talking about, just be sure you're confident and want the responsibility (because it is a responsibility).

Listen to Nat. She's very wise. :)

And we have a new topic: My Padawan disappeared! What should I do?

Yes, I know. Suspiciously similar to the last topic. :p So you've put in the time, found yourself a good Padawan with whom you work well together and get along well. Then, suddenly s/he stops reading your PMs and logging into the forums. What has happened? Was there a tragic accident? A freak weather problem that cut off the internet? Or has your Padawan faded away from TF.N? The bigger question is, what should you do? Has it happened to you, and if so, what have you done?

Inquiring minds want to know. :D

Listen to Nat. She's very wise

    Can I quote that? :p

I've had this happen too many times to count (probably because I've also had too many padawans to count :p ). I send them a couple PMs, but after a month or two of not hearing from them, I just take them out of my sig. I don't think I've gotten the chance to get really close to some of them (most because they leave, a couple because I knight them quickly because they don't really need a master). It's easier to let them go; DRL happens.

The invested ones . . . I've had maybe three or four: my current one, my first one, mavjade (who I knighted) and maybe another. Generally if I'm close we talk more and I know when DRL happens; they don't just disappear. I got lucky ;) My first one did disappear, but I knew he was having some things in RL. Other than a couple, I'm afraid to say that I haven't had a really big bond with any enough to think that something other than DRL happened.

Awww... I got mentioned by name! :D [:D]

I had a padawan (my first and only... I need to get back on the list, but NaNo is comming up! [face_worried] ) disapear off the face of the galaxy...after a few months I figured he decided not to post anymore. While it made me sad to lose a padawan it was kinda good because DRL got me and I wouldn't have been the Master I would want to be!
