Who are Rey’s parents? Will Kylo walk into the light, or Rey be swallowed by darkness? And what really happened when Ben Solo spurned Luke’s tutelage and fled to Snoke? This last is revisited several times from different perspectives – surely a nod to Akira Kurosawa’s truth-prodding Rashomon, just as Lucas took so much of his iconography, wipe-and-swipe edits (again in evidence here) and the relationship between C-3PO and R2-D2, from the Japanese master.

But the final word must go to Leia, to whom the film is movingly dedicated. Carrie Fisher here gives a performance of tremendous dignity, wisdom, and love, and is awarded at least three scenes that serve as a fitting goodbye to the fans’ Princess. Her journey from princess to senator to rebel to general of the Resistance is now done and, in a movie that discusses myth-making and the differences between a legend and a relatable, everyday person with hopes and dreams, weaknesses and tenacity, she proves again that she is both. The Force is with her.

All in all, there is plenty that does work in The Last Jedi. Johnson has helped usher this latest Star Wars trilogy into new territory that not only brings plenty of fresh ideas to the table, but honors the original movies as well. And the writer-director has done so with such breathtaking visuals and a deft hand that it’s not hard to see why Lucasfilm would give him his own Star Wars trilogy. Johnson has not only met what were undeniably high expectations with his installment in one of the biggest movie franchises in history, he’s exceeded them. As The Force Awakens proved with its success in 2015, Star Wars is a massively beloved franchise, and The Last Jedi elevates what was already a storied sci-fi/fantasy saga – and sets expectations even impossibly higher for Abrams’ return to the trilogy with Episode IX.

That isn’t to say that the movie, which suffers slightly from the “too many endings” problem that dampened Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and is curiously fussy about things like gender and power, is perfect or beyond reproach. A movie with this many responsibilities can’t be perfect. But The Last Jedi is more than worthy of carrying on the franchise’s legacy. Hamill is better here than he’s ever been in a Star Wars movie, and so is Fisher. Both show up to play Luke and Leia like grizzled veterans who’ve seen it all, Fisher with a greater sense of majesty and hope, Hamill with more than his share of disillusionment. The movie is a tribute to the franchise’s past that embraces the fierce certainty of its future and the ability of its new generation—Ridley, Isaac, Driver, Boyega, Tico, and the rest—to carry the franchise forward. It’s such a successful changing of the guard that by the end I wondered if this could be it: This could be the last Star Wars movie. If it were the end—and of course it’s not—it’d be a way to close out the franchise on a robust, satisfying note. This is a movie, not only for Star Wars fans, but also for fans of losing themselves in, falling in love with, blockbuster movies. That’s a feeling most Hollywood movies have forgotten—and The Last Jedi is here to make us remember it.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ gets a tour de force performance from Mark Hamill

As is often the case with “Star Wars,” a certain battle fatigue begins to set in after two hours, but Johnson possesses an instinct for when he has gone over his limit, and he varies or scales back on the space battles each time he needs to. In any case, it helps that Fisher, Hamill and to an extent Ridley ground the action in deeply wrought emotion.
You don’t see many sci-fi action extravaganzas that are about late middle-aged disappointment, about wondering what it’s all about and whether any of it was worth it. It’s this element that gives “The Last Jedi” an extra something, a fascinating melancholy undercurrent.

The most impressive aspect of the Rotten Tomatoes score so far is that the average total score is 8.3/10!

By contrast, a similar ratio of people enjoyed Thor enough to safely recommend it but on the whole nearly scored it an entire grade lower than that.

There are points where the film appears to have miscalculated or made an outright lame choice (this become worrisome in the middle, when Dern’s Admiral Holdo and Oscar Isaac’s hotshot pilot Poe Dameron are at loggerheads), but then you realize that it was a setup for another payoff that lands harder because you briefly doubted that “The Last Jedi” does, in fact, know what it’s doing.
This determination to split the difference between surprise and inevitability is encoded in “The Last Jedi” down to the level of scenes and shots. How many Star Destroyers, TIE fighters, Imperial walkers, lightsabers, escape pods, and discussions of the nature of The Force have we seen by now? Oodles. But Johnson manages to find a way to present the technology, mythology and imagery in a way that makes it feel new, or at least new-ish, starting with a shot of Star Destroyers materializing from hyperspace in the sky over a planet (as seen from ground level) and continuing through images of Rebel ships being raked apart by Imperial cannon fire like cans on a shooting range and, hilariously, a blurry video conference in which the goggle-eyed warrior-philosopher Maz Kanata (voiced by Lupita Nyong'o) delivers important information while engaging in a shootout with unseen foes. (She calls it a “union matter.”)
There’s greater attention paid here to color and composition than in any entry since “The Empire Strikes Back.”

This seems to be what Breznican was hinting at. What seem like plot holes are immediately filled and hammer you as surprises by design.

Not that I was going to be swayed one way or the other by critics, but Richard Roeper's review had me sold. Outside of things like the horror genre, he and I see eye to eye on these types of movies and, like me, he just freaking loves Star Wars. Can't wait for this weekend!

Especially with this being the 8th main installment. There is boind to be people reviewing this who dont like star wars and are not giving it an objective look

Shame to see the score dropping but I guess it was too much to hope for that 96% might hold. More than possible that 90% will hold though and that would be fantastic.

I'm far more impressed through by the average score - 8.4 which is insanely good (for reference, higher than any MCU film and higher than all SW except for ANH and ESB) and the Metacritic of 84 which is second only to ANH.

The Last Jedi' brings emotion, exhilaration and surprise back to the 'Star Wars' saga

Among the movie’s more indelible achievements is the psychological triangle that develops among Rey, Kylo Ren and his uncle Luke, who are bound by their shared histories and uncertain destinies, and also by weird disruptions within the Force. As Kylo Ren’s malevolent mentor, Serkis also makes a more impressive villain this time around, especially since we now see him in the (hideously misshapen) flesh. That’s a lot scarier than his fuzzy hologram in “The Force Awakens,” when he was basically secondhand Snoke.
Those who have seen Johnson’s mind-bending time-travel thriller “Looper” (2012) — or, for that matter, his insouciantly clever crime capers “Brick” (2005) and “The Brothers Bloom” (2008) — know the director takes an old-school delight in pulling the rug out from under his audience. Even nostalgia goes down better when it’s laced with a healthy dose of the unexpected, and while it hardly skimps on callbacks and fan favorites, “The Last Jedi” has a flowing moment-to-moment unpredictability that rises, on occasion, to genuinely thrilling peaks of surprise.
