ST Critics' reviews for Star Wars: The Last Jedi

I honestly didn't really get the hype for Dunkirk but I acknowledge it was a good film, and Coco is great. That's a very happy place for it to sit IMO.

 

Of course but if a respected reviewer for a major publication goes so much against the grain you have to wonder.

Not really. People can have different opinions than the norm. I dont understand why its questionable to not always follow agree with the crowd.

We've heard from more than one person that the story works much better on screen than in a few slap-dash text lines. Shouldn't be a huge surprise.

 

from an organization that has a strong habit of creating content that is sensationalized to lure viewers/traffic....

Reading that sort of does make me wonder how I would have experienced it all without knowing what's coming. Oh well. I'm excited to see it more than ever!

 

Well we had this with TFA - The reviews made me think it was going to be the greatest movie ever made... And;... Well you know what I thought.

So as encouraging as all these glowing reviews are I'm going to reserve judgement until I actually see it because if TFA is anything to go by there's something about Disney Star Wars that makes them totally lose their critical faculties.

 

nope, the globe and mail gave it rotten (they were also the 1st "top critic" to give TFA a rotten, FWIW)

 

TFA had the advantage of coming off the heels of the prequel trilogy, though. I think these reviews hold a little more weight

 

What is the point of reading reviews if u dont dont believe them anyways?

 

One thing that's really striking me is that there are very few middling reviews - either "awful" or "amazing", for the most part. Turns out it really is divisive, but very, very heavily skewed to the positive side.

But another thing I've noted is that some of the rotten reviews actually ARE middling and are only borderline rotten - one of them gave 2.5/4, how is that a rotten score?

In short, look beyond the score and into the detail, and the reaction is even more positive than it looks.

 

If you are interested. Look at the rotten reviews (don't read, you are gonna watch the movie regardless don't give them clicks) then go to TFA and look at the rotten reviews. So far every rotten review was also someone who gave TFA a rotten review. I think there may be a few flips Mendleson from forbes gave TFA a rotten review but I think he will be fresh this time. I don't think Time Magazine will pan TLJ again (they have multiple reviewers, I would think they would take that review off this one).

Reviews are essentially glorified opinions. Theres nothing to "believe".

 

I take it the main complaint is the running time.

 

this will make three Star Wars movies in a row that were well received by both critics and audiences (assuming audience scores for last jedi are good). Sure is nice to see!

 

The reviews are booming at this point! I love it! Overwhelmingly positive!!!

In short, the main complaints:

- Running time/overstuffed/too much going on - variations on that theme (quite the opposite criticism to TFA!)
- Finn storyline is a bit uninteresting
- Takes some absolutely crazy turns

But I should stress that these are usually minor criticisms in the review and that last point is a major positive to most reviewers rather than a negative.
