Ah, sad news about Poitier. Such a true class act. His performances will continue to stand the test of time.

 

I haven't seen many of his movies, only a few. I should watch a few more. I'll have to see if I have easy access to any.

 

If there’s a Mount Rushmore of acting, Sidney Poitier is definitely on it. I can’t decide whether it’s better to emphasize that he was not just a great black actor, but a great actor, period, one who gave intense, charismatic performances that would still be remembered even if he wasn’t a trailblazer — or the fact that he really was one of the most significant trailblazers in acting history. He played an enormous role as the first real black star, and whether his roles called for quiet dignity or fierce righteousness, he seemed continually called to carry the dignity of the entire black race on his back. And he was up to it. He just knocked it out of the park in critical role after role, exuding class, grace, and brilliant energy while doing it. I can’t recall ever seeing less than a great performance from him. On screen, he was an icon. What he meant offscreen, incalculable.

An idea I’ve been pondering the past few minutes (it’s not all bad waiting at a bus stop this time of day), to make things more fun, and to differentiate this from previous Deadpools: a bonus set of picks for anyone whose signed up now/a half list for those new to the game; would happen in June… 6-picks only, with some new multipliers (some I forgot to include in the OP to be honest).




If this idea isn’t well-received, then it won’t happen.

 

Honestly, I think the bittersweet multiplier should be thrown out as it is, because that is incredibly vague and meaningless.

New bonuses... would depend on specificity.

How? Betty White, Sidney Poitier are great examples bittersweet, “A-list” deaths. Nicholson would be, too (as he’s on enough lists), particularly for me. I think that’s worthy of a multiplier.

 

My definition of bittersweet is that they are beloved and/or liked in most people's minds, lived a long enough life, deep down you knew their death would happen eventually (even if like with Betty White we all denied it and thought she'd live forever), but you are still sad when it happens.

 

Because it's entirely subjective. What's bittersweet to one person is meaningless to another.

 

That’s the point of that multiplier… lively, ridiculous debates.

 

Bill Clinton: semi-sweet.
Poitier, White: bittersweet.
McConnell, Trump: white.
