    I think what vader did by lifting him over the head and throwing him down the shaft is symbolic. Specific, it parallels the Emperor tossing Mace out the window,.

    ...yeah, poor choice of words on my part... Let me rephrase by saying that Luke's plan included the likelihood of his own death and he accepted that.
