An interesting question was brought up on the FF South Africa boards, I was curious - do you think Jedi earn money, like a salary?

I am of the opinion that they don't - I think they are given money when they go on missions to cover their expenses, this is probably why Obi-Wan can afford a drink from Dex's diner \ the cantina where he chops of Zam's arm. On the other hand, we don't know what he was drinking - it could have been complimentary.

Most likely they get a certain amount of money when they go out on missions. After all, Qui-Gon had 20,000 Republic credits when he was at Tatooine.

I think the Jedi might have some kind of special account setup like bounty hunters do. Capture or kill a posted bounty and the credits are automatically received in your account. In the same way, Jedi might have special accounts, under their own name, or under aliases for missions. The credits are only for use when needed, and the Jedi survive much like the biblical disciples: going from place to place, mooching off of the surrounding people or just living on their own.

I don't think they get paid for there work. But they do get money to cover expenses like food and drinks. So,they probably have access to money when they need it,it's just not an official paycheck. :)

They only have a small credit account for missions, that's it.

Remember, possession is forbidden. This means they would not be able to earn and own fiancial assets.

Free room and board (perhaps even free HBO!)...
Expense account when needed for missions...
Housekeeping services etc. by the temple staff, I bet...

I mean, the Jedi Knights are a government program, I'm sure there's adequate funding. Perhaps even overfunding. [face_devil]

This is quoted directly from the Wizards of the Coast Power of the Jedi sourcebook:

In the Rise of the Empire era, the Jedi Order receives its funds from the Republic Senate, in return for which the Jedi make their services available to the Supreme Chancellor. This considerable funding pays for ten thousand Jedi, support and maintainence personnel, the upkeep of the vast Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and a small fleet of vehicles and starships set aside for use by the Jedi, as well as the incidental expenses the Jedi Order incurs. The services the Jedi provide are equally valuable.

A Jedi on a mission for the Order carries a sum of money based on his anticipated needs. The Temple is careful with its funds, but not stingy: a Jedi might be given a number of Republic credits equal to his level squared by x 100 [this is in game stats, not "reality"]. A Padawan receives no money. Any money he needs is entrusted to his Master, who doles it out to the Padawan as necessary.

Because the money Jedi receive is limited, Jedi are expected to cut costs whenever possible. They take public transportation and make do with sparse lodgings and simple meals. In most cases, Jedi can count upon the cooperation of Republic-aligned governments for their needs, but when a Jedi needs to keep his activities covert (as is often the case outside Republic-controlled space), he might have to improvise.

In any event, the Temple expects any unspent funds to be returned upon completion of the mission. (This includes funds acquired during the mission, which can help defray the Republic's expenses.) Most Jedi Knights rarely need money while they are outside the walls of the Jedi Temple. The Force generally provides what is needed, in one fashion or another.

I'm fairly certain Jedi are able to be self-sufficient by doing jobs for others, such as serving as mercenaries, farming, doing odd jobs, etc. When a Jedi is called for a mission, I'm certain the being will be given some form of compensation. I doubt Jedi wish to seek wealth, but I'm certain they would keep a few things for their personal use.

Jedi, as individuals own very little. What credits they require for their missions are given to them by the Jedi Council, which, in turn receives draws them from an account set up for them by the Government. Check out the JEDI APPRENTICE books. They may be junior fiction but there's a lot in them that doesn't make it into the adult novels.

The JEDI APPRENTICE books also do a great job of carrying first Obi-wan, and then Anakin through the years to adulthood. Watching Anakin's progress at this time (and being a parent) I can see why Anakin went the way he did. If Qui-Gon had been around he would have had the father figure he so desperately need to keep him in line. Unfortunately, Obi-wan could never be anything but an older sibling. And we all know how most siblings squabble and try to out do one another. What Obi-wan said to Qui-Gon right in front of Anakin in MENACE (on the platform before leaving for Naboo) didn't help, either.

This is not to say Anakin should be forgiven for turning to the dark side --- smack that kid up the side of the head!
