Comics Doctor Aphra (Vol. 2) April 2020

Hmm, so I just randomly picked this up at the library, and to my surprise, Durge is alive. Okay, so Obsession isn't in the current continuity. But then I look on Wookieepedia, and it turns out this is his first appearance in canon. I thought all the old Clone Wars era material was included in new canon?

 

Not at all, the TCW show itself is canon, but any TCW-tie ins (novels, comics etc) are not, and nor is the original Dark Horse /Del Rey publishing programme of that era

 

Durge never appeared in the canon The Clone Wars. He only appeared in the Clone Wars microseries which isn't canon.

Trip, telling the Spark that he and BT-1 are intolerant of competition was exactly the thing I was expecting.

Well, once again Aphra and murderbots together are unwillingly working for a powerful master, but this time an anti-Sith one.

 

This story is a little weird if you ask me

 

I think the Spark is a neat idea, but the Crimson Reign / Hidden Empire connections are making the arc a bit chaotic for me.

 

IMO, of all four post-TESB series this one is the most isolated from crossover events.

 

Right, but I think that's a big part of why the Crimson Dawn stuff in this arc feels so tacked on to me. Why did Spark!Aphra's big showdown with her friends have to happen aboard the Vermillion? I get that the the Spark seeking vengeance against the Sith aligns with Qi'ra's own crusade, but doesn't she have her hands full with a totally different dark side archaeology project right now?

In the issue, it's "Kho Phon Farus' Ascendant technology." Nothing about the Spark. Anyway, it's just a minor quibble I have with the crossover. I think I just wish the Spark Eternal story line had a little more room to breathe.

Seems like a final showdown between Vader and Aphra, this time for real. Wonder if he will somehow help freeing her from the Spark, ending Aphra's long "sinner, serving a diabolical master" narrative, that started with him (Aphra's most
frightening boss) and continued with Triple-Zero (the most sadistic one), Domina (falsely benevolent one) and the Spark (for obvious reason, the most controlling one).

 

We have reached issue #27 of the 2020 Aphra series. In issue 27 of the previous Aphra series is when Vulaada Klam debuted. She's one of my favorite characters from these Aphra series' and I'm starting to wonder if they are finished with her character. They had the perfect opportunity to bring her back in this latest arc but instead they chose to focus more on characters created for the 2020 series (understandably so since they were characters the writer currently working on the series created but still a little disappointed as I'm not as into the original characters for the Aphra 2020 run).

 

Hope that Vulaada will return after Aphra finding a way to finally change her life for a better, originally the latter left the former to protect from her life's craziness.

Well, glad that doctor returned control over her body, that was faster than I expected.
Hope that ships from Tagge's fleet someday will have a more detailed look.

 

She briefly showed up in issue 21 of the 2020 run, but it seems that she didn’t join Sana’s rescue team.

They indeed had an opportunity to use her again but it seems the writer chose to use her own characters over her (again understandably so but still disappointing as I don't think the current writer has done the best job in the new character department).

Domina is an awesome "just as planned"-type character. Ronen is finally dead, hope that this *** will not revive again.

Seems like Aphra indeed is going to have a last stand against Vader on the Amaxine Station.
