Watched an episode of Law & Order SVU last night, guest starring Alex Kingston. Her character's last name is Pond. Given River Song's original name, coincidence or not?

 

Which came first - that episode or River's appearance in Doctor Who?
Don't forget that Peter Capaldi was billed as 'WHO doctor' in World War Z before his appearance as Doctor Who.

 

River's appearance in Doctor Who by about a year, although Alex Kingston appeared in another SVU episode before "Crush," but that was also after her first Doctor Who appearance.

 

So before she was revealed as Amy's daughter? Coincidence I expect

 

That's right. Amy wasn't even on the show until the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith), while River Song's first appearance was during David Tennant's tenure.

 

You're right - Silence in the Library, if I recall correctly for River..

 

Or it was deliberate and they just had the same idea as Moffat when it came to making a reference.

It's not as if the shift from River to Pond is a subtle idea, I remember when they revealed Karen Gillain's character name, fans were making jokes and drawing connections to River almost immediately.
