Discussion Does Ben Solo Deserve his own movie?

I can see Ben Solo appearing in post ROTJ streaming series. A child actor playing him naturally.

The Rashomon sequence in TLJ opens up on his backstory or the events leading up to his turn to the dark side, and why explain it further? If you go back and explain everything, you risk ending up like Lucas tried in TPM - it becomes a bit cheesy and on the nose. And certainly controversial, like that makeover of an explanation of The Force.
Or you end up with a boring origin story line in the Marvel tradition.

 

They'll have to hand wave away the lack of Han Solo and Leia in a Ben Solo TV show but yeah, that aside I can totally see them making a young Ben Solo TV show. Can't say I want to see that but it'll probably happen.

 

Lego Star Wars started that reboot of the character by showing/referring to him as a child to end the post-ST Lego trilogy.

 

Lego Star Wars likely isn't canon.

Luke and Ben show with New Republic stories that you have Leia in.

 

A Ben Solo, Luke show or whatever would probably have to be animated at this point.

I love more ST content. And animation would do it wonders like it did with the PT era.

 

I'm actually surprised to see the "nos" outweigh the "yes's" here. IMO Ben/Kylo Ren was one of the few things about the ST I found myself curious about and actually wanting to see more of...

 

The moment Kylo took off his mask, I stopped caring about him.

 

Oddly, I feel the same. I love Adam Driver in a lot of things (especially Logan Lucky), but to me he was miscast as Kylo Ren. And incredibly underwritten. In the ST, he could’ve said and did everything with the mask on, and the effect would have been greater. With perhaps a de-masking near the end. As it stands, there are nothing interesting or complex about his arc. And I think in that context, he would’ve worked better masked. Like Din Djarin, who Favreau and Filoni were brave enough to keep almost entirely masked.

 

My first impression of Kylo Ren was not flattering. Who does this poser wannabe think he is? He's no Vader. But watching him and getting to know him, it became clearer there were reasons why he was that way. I still don't like him, but he was an interesting character, well-written and well-acted.

I wouldn't mind Ben Solo content that takes place prior to the ST and actually provides some substantive psychological motivation for his embrace of the darkside. Lucas gave us three films building up Anakin's motives; the ST gave us nothing.

Show don't tell is a fundamental of narrative for a reason. And while some might see subtext about his motives in the ST, and they may be right in what they see, this is still only subtext, and therefore debatable and subjective.

Much more satisfying would be seeing his problems actually dramatized, not merely suggested or talked about.

As for post ST Ben Solo, well -- he's dead and should remain so. Death should be meaningful or they shouldn't bother killing characters.
