It's the USJS, then Continuing USJS, then USJS III. And my spin-off of it "Loving you From Afar" which takes an alternative road on the whole Obi/Cali bit.

*ssh, don't tell the other USJS I'm here right now. I'm hiding from them because I took Obi-torture a little TOO far*

The rest of the day went by awkwardly for both women. Sabe introduced Cali to the Gungans, including the infamous Jar Jar Binks. Then they returned to Theed Palace. Sabe left Cali-Ana there and hurried to the Royal Chambers. She needed to think, but she was afraid to. The moment she entered the chamber, Sache pulled her over.

    ?Goodness, Sabe, what?s wrong??

Sabe looked at her friend and shook her head. ?I swear things never cease to surprise me.?

Sache frowned. ?What is it? What did you find out??

The decoy looked up, a strange smile coming across her lips. ?I found out that Obi-Wan loves another woman.?

Five gasps resounded around the room. Sabe jumped, not realizing that everyone was present. She flushed and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. ?Well, sort of. Nevermind.? She turned away, chiding herself for being so careless. Now all they would be doing is talking about this. Sabe quickly left and headed for her suite.

The emptiness didn?t help. Sabe paced around the room, feeling as if she would explode. If only she had known before.

The holo-com unit beeped, snapping Cali-Ana out of her reverie. She stared at it for a moment, then answer it. ?Angli, here.?

The image of Hugh Glannia appeared. Her producer. ?How are things looking on the Rim??

?Wonderful,? Cali said truthfully. ?It is beautiful.?

Glannia nodded, then frowned. ?Glad you enjoyed it, Angli. The production has been canned.?

    ?What?? Cali cried. ?It?s canceled??

?There is more money to be had elsewhere,? Glannia shrugged. ?People want war stories, that?s what we will give them. Come back to Alderaan and we?ll work out a different arrangement.?

The image vanished. ?Sithspawn!? Cali swore, her fist slamming down on the table. How could people thirst for more war once it was over? Well, she had done her damage here, like she always did. Sabe had not been quite so friendly after the news, but Cali understood completely. She didn?t know how to act around Obi-Wan?s wife?even if she explained that it was official for the sake of the Jedi and safety.

The woman hurried out of the suite. She would announce her departure and leave by morning. She was halfway across the palace when she realized she had no idea where Sabe rested. The actress skidded to a halt and looked about. Just as she turned, a door hissed open and man in Naboo uniform came out. He had the ranking of a Captain and was rather handsome.

?Excuse me,? Cali said, hurrying up to him. ?You wouldn?t happen to know where Sabe?s chamber is??

The man paused, a sardonic smile crossing his lips. ?Yes, Miss, I do.?

    ?Where??

?I?ll lead you down there,? the man said.

?Thank you,? Cali said. ?And you are . . .??

?Khrys,? he said. ?Kantana.? He led her to one of the far wings of the palace, stopping near a large set of double doors. ?This is the Royal Chambers. Better have a good reason to want through.?

?A message to the Queen and Sabe,? Cali said, biting her lip. ?Is that good enough??

Khrys smiled. ?Probably not.? He stepped up to one of the stationed guards. ?Notify the Queen and her handmaiden, Sabe, that they have an important visitor??

?Yes, Captain,? the guard said. ?Right this way, Ma?am.?

Khrys gestured for Cali-Ana to follow. She thanked him and disappeared into the enclosed wing. The guard said not a word, but went to the doors on the far end. Just as they passed a door, it opened, and Sabe stepped out. The handmaiden gasped, then maintained composure.

?You may go now, Guard,? Sabe said authoritatively. She looked at Cali-Ana, her eyes neutral. ?How?d you manage to get through??

?Captain Kantana escorted me here,? Cali said.

The handmaiden raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. Then she glanced down the hall to where the guards were stationed. ?I still don?t know what to think.?

?You won?t have to,? Cali said quickly. ?I just got the call that production has bee

Anakin Skywalker stormed onto the starship, his Master not far behind. The Padawan was infuriated. He is holding me back. They all are. The young man ignored the attempts to soothe him with the Force. This mission was suppose to be his last before he became a Knight, but no, the Council had announced he wasn?t ready. He was too impatient and impulsive. Obi-Wan had inclined to agree. That was what goaded him even more. Damn, Obi-Wan! Hadn?t he assured Anakin that the Council was ready to approve his ascend into Knighthood?

*They are afraid you are more powerful. They wish not for you to realize your true potential.*

Anakin frowned at the new voice in his head. No, it wasn?t new. It had been there since he had become a Padawan. Perhaps it was Qui-Gon, telling him what Obi-Wan wished not to reveal. Or it was another dead Jedi. Or perhaps the Force itself.

*You seek the true nature of the Force. I will give it to you. I will teach you!*

?Who?? he whispered. ?Who are you??

The voice did not answer. Obi-Wan came into the lobby room. The Jedi Knight?s manner was of calm composure. He sat down across from Anakin, his keen blue eyes scrutinizing the younger man. Anakin gazed at him steadily. He was not in the wrong, it was his Master. All of them were wrong.

?You have not be denied becoming a Knight, Padawan,? Obi-Wan said quietly. ?The Council and I simply agree that you are not ready. Most Padawans do not make Knighthood until after twenty years of apprenticeship.?

Anakin didn?t answer. Now Obi-Wan was making excuses. Yes, boy, yes. Anakin listened to the voice. It was soothing and very hypnotic. It was this voice that had both soothed him and haunted him. It had been there when the Force had been especially powerful and had seemed to feed even more power to him. And whenever the Council and other Jedi Masters were around, that power seemed to fade.

*Yes, boy, they are stealing it from you. Preventing you from succeeding. Remember what it was like to be a slave? You are still a slave! To them!*

Anakin nodded slightly, his blood turning dark. He looked back at Obi-Wan, his expression perfectly serene. Soon Anakin would be free of Obi-Wan and his tyranny. Soon he would be allowed his full power. And if they tried to deny him of it, he would simply deny them their choices.

?Republic shuttle is inbound, Your Highness.?

Amidala smiled, a hint of girlish excitement in her eyes. Sabe smiled, too, but with lack of enthusiasm. She had had two weeks to deal with the disturbing knowledge about Cali-Ana, but she still didn?t know how she would handle it before him. The handmaiden simply sat in her chair in the throne room.

?You are all dismissed for the evening,? Amidala said, unable to keep the quiver of anticipation from her voice. She rose from her throne, winking at Sabe as she stepped down. The other handmaidens got out of their seats and began to stretch. The Queen hurried out of the throne room, to wash her make-up off and change no doubt. Sabe exited at a much slower pace.

By the time she reached the Royal Chambers, Sabe was sure the shuttle had landed. She entered her chambers and paced about. Her anger was beginning to boil again. Angry that he hadn?t told her. Had she not always told him about her interests during their time of corresponding through letters? Except for Khrys, but that was a different matter. He had deliberately deceived her.

The doors opened and she heard him come in.

    ?Sabe??

The handmaiden took a deep breath, then entered the first chamber. Obi-Wan was there, in his robes and looking very worn and tired. He looked as if he could benefit from her tender care, but she was too upset to let his appearance slide. Sabe Mabriee was a stubborn woman, and she had her mind set on setting things straight.

Obi-Wan smiled and stepped forward, his arms opening for her. Sabe came forward, but didn?t step into his embrace. ?Why didn?t you ever tell me about Ben?? she demanded, her tone harsh.

The Jedi Knight?s mouth nearly fell to the floor. The shock registered in his eyes. Obi-Wan did not speak for several moments, but just stared at her. Finally, he spoke, ?How??

?Cali-Ana told me,? Sabe said, her hands sliding to her hips. Then they fell slack at her sides.

?Cali?? Obi-Wan looked as if he would faint. ?When??

?When she was here,? Sabe said, her eyes flashing. ?Why didn?t you tell me, Obi-Wan? It was one hell of a way to find out! You had a son!? Her anger was rising, finally free to release itself. ?Sith, Kenobi! I became friends with her before I found out she was your lover! Do you have any idea how I felt? I was talking to the woman to have your child! I thought she was crazy!?

?Sabe?? Obi-Wan started to say, placing his hands on her shoulders. She jerked away.

?How am I to know if they?re aren?t more women out there that will show up and claim that you?re the father of their children?? Sabe was shouting, but she couldn?t help herself.

?There isn?t anyone else,? Obi-Wan said. He looked at her desperately. ?It was a long time ago, Sabe. I didn?t think it mattered.?

?Well, it does! These are things you let your wife know about!?

?And it would have been nice if you had let me know about Khrys right away,? Obi-Wan countered, his own voice rising a degree.

?That was different!? Sabe cried, knowing that it was only marginally. ?At least I did tell you! I wasn?t married to him yet, and you never indicated there was something between us!? She felt hot tears threatening to spill from her eyes. She hated yelling, hated fighting with him.

?Sabe,? Obi-Wan said desperately, wrapping his arms around her. She fought his hold, but he held tight. ?I?m sorry for not telling you. I wanted to keep it behind me. Please, forgive me.?

    ?Do you still love her??

    ?I love you!?

Sabe looked up at him, pushing herself away. ?I?m going to my office. I?ll be back later.?

    ?Sabe??

?No, Obi-Wan. Let me be.? Sabe wiped at her eyes and left the doors to shut automatically behind her. She ran down the wing and into the main section of the palace. Once inside her office, she felt herself calm down fractionally. That hadn?t gone so well. She should have talked it over with him,

    Chapter Six

?Know what one of the most amazing things about you is?? Obi-Wan asked Sabe, looking up at her angelic face. ?Your lips.?

Sabe smiled, looking down at him fondly. It was sometime in the morning. They had gotten out of bed to start their day, but had ended up taking station on the couch. Obi-Wan was lying on his back and she was sprawled out across his stomach. They had just been talking, remembering past events and laughing over some of their mistakes. ?Why is that??

The Jedi Knight traced her smile with his fingertips. ?For starters: how they taste. Then it would have to be every delightful word that comes from them.?

?Even when I sound like a drunk Corellian??

?Especially when you sound like a Corellian,? Obi-Wan laughed. She smiled down at him, her chin resting on her folded arms. ?Drunk. I have yet to see that.?

Sabe raised her eyebrows at him. ?There are a few cantinas on this planet.?

    ?What are we waiting for??

She laughed. ?You? Intoxicated? Isn?t there a Jedi rule for that or something? Or are you stiffs by nature??

?I?ll let that comment slide,? Obi-Wan said. ?Maybe.?

She stuck her tongue out at him. ?Mind your manners, Kenobi. Tell me more about my lips.?

?Why talk?? Obi-Wan asked innocently. She grinned and lowered her head to kiss him. It was long and sensual. When they finally broke the connection, Sabe just smiled again and rested her head on his chest. She felt his hands run through her hair and over her back. She sighed in contentment. ?Know what else I love??

?What?? she whispered, letting her eyes close.

?Your hair. Don?t ever grow old and go bald.?

Giggling, Sabe opened her eyes. ?Don?t you have to worry about that more than I do, Old Bones??

Obi-Wan made a face and then ran his fingers over her trendils. He kissed her locks and looked into her eyes, feeling as if he could simply drown in their golden brown splendor. There were times on missions that he could not allow himself to think about her or fantasize about times together, but at the moment, nothing outside of their love mattered. Not the ?disappearing? of the Jedi or Anakin?s disturbing temperament, or anything else that had demanded his full concentration. Urgency suddenly struck him, impaling itself through his heart. Obi-Wan sat up a bit, his heart both swelling and contracting.

    ?Sabe, I love you.?

?I know that,? Sabe said, almost dreamily. Her soft lips formed a sweet smile and her eyes gazed upon him with such devotion it nearly took his very life away.

?I really love you,? Obi-Wan said, his voice choking up. The urgency thickened, almost strangling him.

    ?I love you, too.?

Obi-Wan reached up and caressed her beautiful face, his hands running through her hair. The intensity inside him was beyond bearable. He closed his eyes for a moment, drawing on the Force to calm him. What was happening? He felt her sudden alarm and concern, her weight shifting on him. Then he realized what it was that had seized control of him.

    Fear.

He was afraid. But why? What did he fear? He was a Jedi Knight. He had not been afraid since before Knighthood. What was terrifying him so?

    ?Obi-Wan? Love, what?s wrong??

Obi-Wan opened his eyes, surprised that his vision was blurred. His eyes stung and her worried eyes seemed to water. No, it was his eyes that were moistened. And he was shaking, trembling and cold.

    ?Obi-Wan?!?

Sabe lifted herself off him, helping him sit up. Never in all of her life had she seen him like this, tremors coursing through his strong body. The only time she had ever even seen him close to this was in the reactor room kneeling before Qui-Gon Jinn?s body. Not even after they had lost their baby. ?Love, what is it??

Obi-Wan drew her into his arms, clinging tightly. His trembling eased and he breathed deeply. ?I love you. No matter what,? he whispered,

    ?It is almost complete.?

Palpatine smiled at his own words. Skywalker was now his, even if the young pupil was not aware. Soon he would reveal to the apprentice that it was him that had whispered to him, had caused his nightmares, had nursed the true power of the Force into him. He would soon realize that the Jedi were weak, thus weakening Skywalker?s powers.

How delicious it would be to watch the betrayal and anger seep into Skywalker?s soul. Then his power would grow and he would serve the Sith Order. All he needed was the seed of doubt in the Jedi Council to grow.

?And I will water that seed and nourish it.?

    @ @ @
    @ @ @

Obi-Wan opened his eyes and stared unseeing at the ceiling. Sabe was fast asleep in his arms. Her soft breathing and contact was enough to comfort him for the moment. Something had happened to him, or he had a premonition of what would happen to him. Either possibility was not pleasant. Or what if it was Anakin?s fear he had sensed? What if his Padawan had needed him while Obi-Wan had napped on the couch?

The Jedi Knight climbed off the couch, cradling Sabe in his arms. He carried her to the bedroom and gently settled her down under the silk covers. She moaned softly, but did not wake. He knew she would awake soon, but she was peaceful for the moment. ?I will be back, love,? he whispered, kissing her forehead.

Then he left their suite in search of Anakin. Stretching out with the Force, Obi-Wan found his Padawan?currently engrossed in more personal manners. The Knight moved passed the younger mind, also brushing past the Queen. He blushed terribly and shut his wandering down completely. It occurred to him that Anakin might have stumbled across his master?s wondering and wandering thoughts. Obi-Wan suddenly felt sorry for his Padawan.

The Knight wandered the palace halls, no particular destination in mind. His thoughts were abuzz as he pondered over his elapsed fear. The only explanation he could come up with was that he was afraid to lose Sabe.

?Well, isn?t that a sorry sight??

Obi-Wan turned towards the female voice, noting the tease and amusement in the lilt. ?Hello, Sache,? he greeted with a crooked smile.

The young woman cocked her head to the side, scrunching her brow. ?Troubles, Jedi? You forgot to shave.?

Obi-Wan scratched his chin. ?Yeah, well, I just woke up.?

Sache raised an eyebrow. ?Just you??

?Sabe is resting.? Immediately, he regretted his words.

?Tire her out, again?? Sache grinned impishly at him and winked.

?Yes.? Obi-Wan wasn?t even going to bother digging himself out. Sache laughed and slapped him on the back. The Knight scowled, which only caused the buoyant woman laugh harder. ?Is there a reason for you to be torturing me??

?I?ve been sworn to duty by the Wise One,? Sache replied. ?I?m suppose to insure that you never have a moment?s peace.?

?You do a very good job of it.?

    ?Thank you!?

Obi-Wan just shook his head and began walking again. He?d given up trying to figure Sache out. Sabe had told him she?d given up after the first day she had met her. Obi-Wan could have saved a lot of headache. Sache excused herself, returning back to an errand. The Knight walked on, his thoughts turning towards Anakin.

The last mission had not gone well. It had been fairly simple, compared to some of the dangerous missions that other Jedi had been commanded for by the Chancellor. Some hadn?t returned from missions yet, or hadn?t reported in weeks.

Suspicion and doubt was beginning to circulate once again throughout the Jedi Temple. The Jedi had thought the brief period of time when Jedi were beginning to be hunt
