Agreed, but then the movie would have been rejected by Chinese censors. Which shouldn't matter, SW isn't making any money in China anyway. [face_dunno]

I know we all like to blame China for when films don't meet our expectations. But let's be clear, Finn-Poe didn't happen because of Western audiences.

The world is still extremely homophobic, even outside of scapegoats like China and Russia.

Disney just doesn't like anything that invites controversy, they seem to think it could get in the way of profits.

Yup. Just like George Lucas, who refused to let Bioware put same sex relationships in The Old Republic at launch, because Star Wars isn't political and doesn't have sexuality. (The actual reasons for no gays in that game.)

    Oh wait...

Oh for ****s sake, blaming nonwhites and foreigners about why Disney, a wealthy company making billions of dollars a year, didn't put a major same-sex relationship into Star Wars is nonsense. The fact is that in America, 2020, it's still taboo in media for two men to kiss and be romantically involved. Lesbians are fine, because rowdy western guys think it's hot for two girls to kiss, but two men kissing threatens mens' masculinity (same with a man + transwoman relationship) and that's going to generate controversy. Movie studios are companies. Rarely are they going to be in the forefront of social progress. They look at culture and they make a financial determination. And you bet they look at American culture. Star Wars isn't the MCU; No Avengers movie has managed to come close to the domestic gross of The Force Awakens.

Exactly.... Merican fanboys and Christian zealots would lose their **** if *gasp* they were subjected to two men kissing.

I think a lot of people, myself included, would say that making 92% of TFA's domestic total (and in less time) is actually kinda close - to say nothing of dwarfing its global total.

Star Wars doing better domestically but worse globally than avengers is my actual point here as to why Disney looks to America's culture about two men kissing. This is my whole point. It's like you didn't understand the conversation at all.

That in itself is not a persuasive argument, imho. The domestic reaction creates backlash even if they sell plenty of tickets at home and/or abroad. It could even leave easily-triggered conservatives threatening a boycott. Disney is too image-conscious to put itself in that situation of its own accord, I think.

That's kinda the crux. Disney are BIG enough to be able to ignore the image consciousness and be able to push through and take a stand without really having any impact on the bottom line.

Disney have the name and the financial clout to actually have an impact but don't. Why is that do you think?

Not enough likes in the universe for that vid. I hit like, then unlike just so I could like it again.

Also, I remember the song from before video games were a thing. Even Pong.

But do you remember it from the approximately three year window in between the release of Gunfighter Ballads and the first incarnation of Spacewar in 1962? :p

On relationships: I can understand the desire of relatively marginalized groups for representation. But I frankly feel that onscreen, there was probably more hint of a possible Finn/Rey relationship. The way they hastily constructed and then discarded things like Rose Tico seems to at least raise the specter to me that someone felt black-white inter-racial relationships (or the possibility of them) were still too-controversial.

In general though, rather than trying to hit an exhaustive list of all the weirdness in this movie, I just wanted to ask some of my biggest questions of "what was even the point" since the movie seemed to undermine it's own logic pretty often.

    1. Leia is a fully trained Jedi. Fine. So why did they need to find Luke? Why didn't she just play his role? What was the point of Rey? How did we need any of this at all?

    2. Ten Thousand Fold. What? Palpatine had built a fleet so large that if the First Order already had one million Star Destroyers, they would end with 10 billion? Really? If his force was so large what did he want from Kylo Ren? Why wait all that time, only to reveal himself by radio broadcast? Why use Star Destroyers at all if he can just shoot big dumb magical lightning? Why Snoke if the old officers would have just had more allegiance to him? Why did literally anything post-ROTJ to now happen in the new canon if this is all it was leading up to?

    3. Why didn't he just use Rey's parents for whatever weird thing he was going to use Rey for? Since, you know, he did successfully capture them.

The movie is such a flavorless puree of complete nonsense there's no real incentive to even think about answering questions. I can't even form a lucid question about the experience. I never get farther than "what?" and "huh?"

Lol, I still haven't seen it. The reviews from people whose judgment I respect and trust have been enough for me to wait and catch it on Disney+. I have a difficult time sitting through full movies. The last time I went to the cinema, I fell asleep, no joke, and the movie was actually decent. I'd rather wait and see a bad movie at home, where I can watch and process it in segments. I did the same thing with Rogue One and Solo.

Even in segments, you will not be able to process this.

The first 120 seconds are some of the most brutal ever put to film.
