Considering how important General Hux was to the plot, this title might have more going for it than a first glance would suggest.

    I had a thought :

    The Legacy of Skywalker

I know I have stated my liking of TROS but could the above have worked better - in terms of less meaning apart from the obvious reference to the saga [face_thinking]

"As once I fell, so falls the last Skywalker!"

But because he rose, he is no more the last Skywalker than Luke is the last Jedi.

I like the symmetry of this formula.

I think it's possible if RJ hadn't used Last in EP8 that EP9 might have been titled :

    Last of the Skywalkers....

Yeah, something being mentioned in a movie and used as a title for a couple of Legends stories totally makes it a suitable Saga title.

The title "The Rise of Skywalker" is a real puzzler to me. The Skywalker clan has now died out. If it's referring to Rey, she's now retired to Tatooine and apparently wants to become a moisture farmer. That's some "rise"!
Perhaps the title should've been "The End of the Skywalkers".

The title is a little gimicky I admit... but it can refer to Ben Solo returning to the light - "rising" - and Rey defeating their oldest enemy with help from the Jedi spirits, largely Luke and Anakin. And Rey completing Leia's journey comes up at a few points in the film.

And Leia and Luke (to a degree) trained Rey.
Luke also had a bit of a redemptive influence on the story as well (for himself, and for Rey).

Also btw she isn't retiring to Tattooine, she is just paying her respects there then she is going to rejoin her friends. And presumably continue the Jedi Order.

    Good points.

I think it is a counter to Anakin becoming Darth Vader. It was Palpatine (the puppet master of the then Galactic conflict) who knights him “Riiise”.

In TROS Finn later says “people are rising up ...” . Now the Galaxy will renew itself and Skywalker is the name adopted by the new Jedi rebirth. Palpatine nearly destroyed the Jedi by assistance of a former Jedi who was told “...show no mercy”

But the Skywalkers are merciful. Leia still taking Ben as her son she’s sacrificial despite his turn to evil. That in turn brought back the next generation Skywalker to its conclusion Ben sacrifices himself for Rey adopting the name is integral to this victory for the Galaxy.

There was no indication that Rey was planning to live on Tatooine to farm moisture. She was just burying some lightsabers there.

It struck me today that The Rise of Skywalker could’ve been the title of Episode I, instead of TPM. TPM is a fine title, but the point is that TROS could have applied well too. It would have been more logical than the “rise” part being used in Episode IX, IMO, even though I get them wanting to use “Skywalker” for the last film of the Saga.

I'd say it's in line with the nature of the film as a whole in that it summarizes the whole saga.

'Rise' means also resurrection. Christ had no father. Anakin's 'last steps'.

'If Skywalker returns the new jedi will rise' - if Skywalker rises the jedi will return.

Lol. I went to Mongolia once and have pictures of the whole trip that I later posted on Facebook. Nobody inferred from those pictures that I had decided to move to Mongolia.

Rey showed no signs of settling into Tatooine. No hints at an intention to get domestic. The filmmakers in no way implied that she might be moving there. At all. Therefore it’s silly to assume that’s what was happening, while it’s reasonable to suspect she was just visiting in honor of the Skywalkers.

You are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine. Keep in mind though, Rey had no where to call her home.

And I’m entitled to describing your opinion as unfounded. We don’t know if she was planning on living there or not. But the film does not in any way imply that she was. There’s simply no hint of it.

The novelisation stated she wasn't. She was going to return to her friends.

Hence the sunrise - an open-ended new beginning.
Who knows what she does next.

I think after a while that a slight change in the title would have been better:

    'Rise of the Skywalkers'

    Meaning all the Skywalkers Rise,

Leia Rises to bring Ben back to the light before she dies,
    Ben Rises in his redemption,
Luke Rises as a Force ghost like his former self,
Anakin Rises in his Force ghost voice to encourage Rey,
Rey Rises to defeat Palpatine and take the Skywalker name.

"Skywalker" in a title just strikes me as so weird, and probably still would even if I thought the whole thing about Rey adopting the name was pulled off in a better manner.
