I saw Equilibrium in the cinema

I liked it a lot. Admittedly it's been a while since I saw it last, but I do remember it most fondly. :p

Christian Bale's a great actor, as well, and Preston's a similar combination of action and character moments to what Bale made of Batman. Sean Bean is also a great supporting person, although Taye Diggs got a little annoying after a while. (He's definitely not dosing, that one.) There's some nice visuals in there, and although it's lost a bit of sparkle since I read 1984, they have a decent premise.

Plus the Mona Lisa gets burnt, which regardless of your attitudes towards the lady in question is possibly unique on film . . .

I saw Equilibrium a few weeks ago. I wasn't impressed.

Once I saw the clerics' initial raid on the "rebels", the story looked familiar. Once whats-his-name found the art stashed and copped a forbidden book, I recognized the story right away: Fahrenheit 451.

I'm surprised nobody else here has noticed this yet.

I noticed it but I was to busy raving about the blasted puppy. :)
Anyway, it bears a similarity in the sense that they were imposing an unnatural state upon huamns, because from what I read and understood from the book, it was pretty much the opposite of what Father wanted for Libria. He didn't want any emotions, but the people in Farenheit wanted the basic emotions and a sort of blissful ignorance. I remember this passage from the book: "long live pornography and drugs" I think it said (kinda obvious why it stuck in my mind).
I think it's more similar to 1984 then anything else. Instead of a Big Brother you have a father.

Everyone noticed it. The movie has been compared to many old books, and The Matrix. This, for me, doesn't detract one bit. Also, the movie wasn't on a huge budget, and I think they did well with what they had. The director mentions that "the explosions here at the end look awful. I could've made them better for another thirty or fourty thousand dollars, but it really didn't add to the story. I was happy with it." The guy isn't about flash and bang and WOW! He's about the story, and that's what this movie has; a good story.

In the end the reason why people seem to love this movie... is because it has a soul! :D

The only thing I didn't like about the movie is that it seemed like the last ten minutes were shot edited and scored before they even started on the rest of it.

Everytime I watch the opening sequence and see the Mona Lisa get torched it makes my skin crawl. Even knowing it's just a print, the thought of a society going about destroying the legacy of its ancestors puts me in a somber mood, if only for a few minutes.

I agree. For me it's the whole idea of living in a society that shuns not only evil, but beauty and emotions. To exist in that monochromatic world would be hell for me.

The part that stirs me, is when John Preston tears the paper from the window. To be denied the beauty of a sunrise or sunset is just cruel to me.

My thoughts on the movie - Overrated. The plot was pretty lackluster, action scenes were cool, but a bit over the top. Too predictable as well.

The film was actually quite underrated. Maybe it's overrated in the terms of a "cult" film, but then what cult film isn't overrated by it's followers? The movie was actually very poorly advertised, and very few people actually know of it.

I just felt that the plot was too overdone, in film and literature, and while visually very cool, it was just too predictable for it's own good.

I just saw this, liked it.

Though all dystopian stories are similar, so saying that this is like other things, like books and films, is a bit silly.

I loved the martial arts parts of the film, and Christian Bale did a good turn as Preston. The moment when he was hooked up to that lie detector thing(forgot what it's called) and the lines suddenly went flat, showing he was in total control was very cool. Also, nice to see Sean Bean in a small but vital role.

I absolutely hated this movie with a passion. I almost left the theater during the scene where they killed the dogs offscreen. What a disgusting attempt at manipulating our emotions through cruelty.

And oh, as for those "great" gun kata scenes... bleh, I found them boring and seizure inducing.

I thought Equilibrium was pretty good. While it wasn't as flashy as most modern day movies are, it made up for that in plot. It also asked the audience a very important question-- Is emotion really worth it? For me, that hits home. Emotion is the thing that makes us human, that defines who we are as individuals. The thing for me is, emotion hurts, it kills, it stings. In a society without emotion, you won't have to worry about that. Then again, you have to ask yourself, would you go through all of the pain and heartbreak just to feel 'human' in a time when no one even knows what the meaning of that word is?

Well, I'll leave that up to you to decide. I don't think this was meant to be a hit at the box office, but to provoke thought. I love movies like that.
