FFG's been carved up by Asmodee. First the RPG lines go to a new studio and now this. I guess Asmodee's really trying to keep it focused as the board game and card game studio.

I'd love a co-op Star Wars card game that's closer to Arkham Horror than Marvel Champions (both of which I love). I think that Outer Rim is probably a finished game at this point.

If anyone else plays Star Wars: Legion, I could use some advice.

Is there a "standard" army size? The rulebook mentions that the "learn to play" game only starts with 4 troopers on each side, but I couldn't find anything for a regular game.

The reason I'm asking is because I got the core set recently. If a typical game uses all the Rebel Troopers in the box I'll want to paint them all the same color. But if a typical game uses a smaller number of troopers, I'll want to paint some in desert camo, others in forest camo, etc.

Never mind, I'm just gonna paint half desert camo and half forest camo. Any discrepancies can be explained by Rebels being too short on supplies to get the proper camo for the mission at hand.

Replying to an older question but wanted to throw in my 2 cents on this because outer rim is one of my favorite games of all time. It's easy enough that my 10 year old can play it (she plays a lot of games with us though...) but there is a ton of strategy involved. I will say that I don't love the bounty system and tend to focus on other aspects of the game but I really enjoy the game. I was hoping they would do an expansion with new planets/trade routes/characters (I really think a mandalorian branded version of the game could work, for instance) but it seems to not be a focus for ffg.

You're actually going to want/need more :p For 'standard' play, it's an 800 point cap with an army requiring a commander and 3-6 Corp units (you will typically also have another couple sets of specialists or other units. Most armies are around 10 activations I think). There's also a 'skirmish' format with a 500 point cap played on a smaller area, though I'm not sure if the Corp requirements are adjusted

Wait, so the "Core set" doesn't include enough units/points for a standard game?

Given my table is definitely not 3 X 6 feet though, I'll probably be sticking to skirmish games, at least for a while. I'm not planning on doing tournaments or anything, just casual play.

No, they don't unfortunately. Most advice I see for getting into the game is to find a friend also getting into the game and swap the half of the core you're not using for what they aren't (like rebels for imperial). And then pick up a few expansions

I've heard good things about skirmish, so yeah look into that. But if you're just doing casual for now, you can do whatever really

I've actually bought the game and I really enjoyed it! I haven't been able to play it much due to the pandemic, but I did play it a couple of times with my girlfriend and a couple of times with my brother. Can't wait to play it with my friends in the future.

It could really use and expansion though, after playing it 4 times I think I've encountered most of the cards already.

My suspicion is that Edge Studios are going to do a 2.0 for the SWRPGs.

Probably. And this would be a good time for it - it's been, what, two years or so now since the FFG line petered out? The iron is definitely getting hot. Edge seems pretty busy with their Midnight RPG but maybe on May 4 they'll take the time to drop a little news our way. One can hope.

The last FFG Star Wars RPG product was Starships and Speeders, which was published in Feb 2020.

Edge Studios' website has a little to be desired. I suspect it will be a while for a new Star Wars RPG, whether a rehash of FFG's version or not.

I hope they don't go full reboot. I really like FFG style.

I love the RPG, it's the best yet in my view. But I think a new game is inevitable. The errata for each of the three SWRPG lines are substantial. And Genesys flat out improved upon the early concepts of social "combat" and vehicular combat in particular. Combined with just insights gleaned over nearly 10yrs worth of feedback, they've got enough to do a Ver 2.0 which would in my mind be like playing WEG 1st ed vs 2nd ed R&E.

I have most of the FFG books. I'm not particularly keen on buying new edition material beyond a core rulebook, unless they actually produce products of interest. SAGA actually published some wonderful sourcebooks that didn't just rehash WOTC's original run, for example.

Edge's strategy in this regard may depend a lot on how different a hypothetical second edition is from the first, and how long it actually takes to arrive on shelves. I can't see them releasing a new rulebook in 2-3 years and then sitting back and saying, "You want detailed ship modification rules? Oh, just use that out-of-print sourcebook from nine years ago." I also see a new edition of the core rules as inevitable (and welcome), but as far as support goes anything's possible.

That's fine for people new to the RPG - although the proliferation of e-book versions and print-on-demand weakens the 'out-of-print' argument substantially - but I'm not shelling out money for something that is essentially the same thing that I've already paid for.
In any case, '2-3 years' seems about right for a new core rulebook anyways.

The problem is that there is no legal digital edition for the FFG RPG. If Edge/Asmodee is able to get digital distribution rights fixed, maybe a kind of “Upgrade Kit” would make sense for instead of a full new edition (or even game), but without that I don’t think the Star Wars RPG as it exists now will be kept going as it currently exists

Are we ignoring the fact they released conversion kits for X-Wing..?

Maybe they'll put out a "version 2.0" of the rpg with revised rules. With the sequel trilogy concluded and shows like The Mandalorian exploring the New Republic Era, it would be a good opportunity to make some era sourcebooks. But if they announced a completely new system so soon, they would risk alienating a lot of fans who've spent money on the old system. (Not to mention I'd be impressed with the sheer logistics of making a completely new system from scratch in only a couple years).

I understand for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition fans, the release of new rules in "Tasha's Cauldron of Everything" prompted similar concerns. Not saying it's impossible that a new version is on the way, but it seems like this kind of fear seems to crop up in fandoms all the time.

Was just at B&N yesterday, and all their X-wing Miniatures stuff is half off. Is something happening with the game, or is B&N just phasing it out of their store?

I'm not certain, but I'm guessing probably the latter. Barnes and Noble is under new ownership/management and I believe they're phasing most of the toy and collectible stuff out of their stores and focusing on being booksellers. I may be wrong on the specifics, but I do recall reading some news reports sometime last year (I think?) about it.

Oh wow -- it's been a while since I've been in the US and I had no idea this was happening. Last time I was in a B&N I was surprised at how literally half the store was toys and boardgames. I assumed it was because a lot of the regular toy stores have closed, and B&N was taking advantage of that combined with the fact that a lot of games like RPGs are part of franchises that include books and comics. But a quick search online shows you're right, they're overhauling and attempting to focus on just books. That almost sounds risky (I want to say it sounds great, but having watched every bookstore I've ever known close, I'm not sure how this is going to work).

Decided to check on the status of the new Star Wars RPG:

Asmodee has absolutely nothing. Did learn that the SSD for Armada was $200, though.
