    Fleet Junkie, HO!

As a friendly reminder, the Lit Forum has historically allowed ship specific stuff to be discussed in this thread that is from the upcoming films IF the following rules are observed:
    1. Spoiler Tags are used in all posts & replies
    2. The content is about the SHIPS. Not the plot details of the film
Please observe these rules between now and minimum one week post-release.

Spoilers ahoy - for Episode IX!!

These come from what are essentially "bootleg" sources, and both might be considered rather spoilery... so thanks to Admiral for making sure I didn't overspeak by mentioning them...

New ship top left in this promo image... looks pretty funky, basically two really big Incom-style engines with a proportionally small cockpit and strike foils... :D

There's also a phone-camera recording of the D23 sizzle reel on a certain social media site (not linking to that one here), which shows a Corellian Corvette parked in a big hangar...

Remember, like the Squid just said, keep the spoilers ship-specific in this thread, and keep them under spoiler tags...

Pretty sure we see that ship in the original trailer from behind.

The dearth of new designs make me yawn. This trilogy is boring.

Lucasfilm's been knocking original designs out of the park for Galaxy's Edge, R1, Solo, Resistance, Armada and TLJ(to an extent)... literally everything that's not TFA or RoS. It's clear the blame lies not with the Art Department, but solely with JJ Abrams' lack of vision. As a relatively young fleet junkie who's without the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, the lack of originality is getting mildly infuriating.

Quite the opposite, IMO. Sure, some of the designs are minimal updates (TIE Fighter, X-wing, A-wing, etc), but we have a lot of great new ships:
    • Resurgent-class Star Destroyer
    • Resistance transport
    • MC85 star cruiser
    • Nebulon-C escort frigate
    • Free Virgilla-class Bunkerbuster corvette
    • Vakbeor-class cargo frigate
    • Mega-class star dreadnought
    • MG-100 Star Fortress SF-17 bomber
In terms of capital ships, we're doing rather well. I suspect we'll have a few more very soon too.

To be fair, the Resurgent is the updated ISD, the MC85 is the updated Home One, the Nebulon C is the updated Nebulon B, the Bunkerbuster is the updated Blockade Runner and the Vakbeor is the updated Gallofree.

While they are more original than some fighters designs, they have clear resemblances to the original models and even their allegiance is the same. When I first saw the four new resistance ships I thought they were nice, but they also felt like someone took the four known Rebel Capital Ships and beefed each one up.

I'm not complaining, but I'm also a bit let down by how safe the ship design in this trilogy has been.

Particurlarly when you compare that to the Alien design in this trilogy which is so original and different that you even wonder where are all the old alien species.

Different strokes for different folks, as they say! [face_peace]

I'm old enough to remember the fans who hated on the Prequel ships because they didn't "feel" Star Warsy enough, lol. For these films in particular, it makes sense that Disney wanted to sick close to iconic ship designs/shapes. Nostalgia was a big factor in driving these new films.

I mean, the Resurgent is mostly an ISD with a changed bridge design. Not saying that's a bad thing, I could see the upgraded ISDs of the Remnant in the EU even looking like it in the early years after the Yuuzhan Vong War, before Turbulents and Pellaeons were developed, but the Resurgent is still just a slightly modified ISD. The problem with using old designs is using them when they're illogical. There's no reason for the First Order to be using upgraded TIE Fighters when TIE Interceptors were a thing intended to replace them. There's no reason to have new Y-Wings when they were to be replaced by B-Wings. I'd get it if it was some old junked up privately owned Y-Wing, but this is New Republic surplus.

You do know what kind of people who lead the First Order are?

Bunch of children nostalgic for their heroes of the Empire who have never fought an actual war.

The biggest differences are the lack of a secondary belly hanger - and the radically different prow hangar system. In that respect it's more like a Venator than an Imperial.

The Resurgent is weird, depending on the angle it either looks nearly identical to the ISD or quite different
To me the main difference is the lack of the ISD's massive bridge tower structure, which were always quite iconic.

Interestingly though the oversized bridge tower was almost always the first thing to disappear when someone created a Star Destroyer derivative, all the way from KOTOR to Legacy.

The Harrower-class is my favourite wedge shaped ship, next to the Venator.

A new TV spot shown the back of Kylo's TIE Whisper, and it does have a rear window (and presumably seat for whomever operates the turret underneath) just like a TIE/sf.

The Resurgent-class is emblematic of my problems with ST designs. In the Prequels and OT, Star Destroyers stuck out with clear lines and design choices. The Resurgent is just an ISD with its head cut off and kitbashed parts haphazardly glued together. As much as I can't stand Rian Johnson's story choices, he at least made the artists create ships that stood out and made some semblance of sense in design choices.

I shared this on Twitter awhile back, but definitely relevant for this thread:

I appreciate that the class name is canon again, even if the vessel is a bit different from the EU version. In my mind, the EU version was a true Republic-era design, while the version we see in Rebels is the "Imperialized" version. Just like how we see some differences between the Republic and Imperial versions of the Arquitens-class light cruiser.

    RE: Sequel Trilogy ships

The Resurgent-class isn't my fav, but it has slowly grown on me. It just has fewer good angles than the old ISD's. The MC85 is a stunningly gorgeous ship. Just look at this beauty:

That middle pic shows off how different it was from OT Mon Cala designs.

    What book is that from??

And I posted something similar to your idea a little while back...the "OG" Dread appears in some comic sources with it's traditional appearance....so my thought was...this is an Imperial refit. They put old Dreads in the shipyard and upgraded them to fill the need for support vessels and a fraction of the cost and time it would take to build new ships. Therefore you will see both variants out there.

And have they stuck it with the 16k crew complement in Nu-Canon yet?

In Jedi Fallen Order (which takes place 5 years after ROTS) inquisitors fly TIE interceptors instead of TIE/v1s. While there were presumably only a few prototypes produced at this point this is very early in the timeline, and might contradict the claims that it was designed after the TIE/x1 as a cheaper alternative given that Vader was still using his Eta-2.

The TIE reaper makes an appearence too, presumably used by the elite purge troopers. My current theory is that the TIE striker evolved from this design, rather than the opposite.

Given how early this takes place I would have honestly preferred to see more clone wars era vessels in the imperial navy, and it's a bit weird to see so many Venators being scrapped at this point in the timeline. I'm glad that the game will feature a databank like TFU, so we might see some juicy fleet lore there.
