They've straight up traced fan designs before, at least the ships they're tracing here are actual canon designs this time. Haven't they even traced Halo fan art before?

Surely it wouldn't be that hard for these artists to be provided with 3d models of the ships they need to draw so they can pose those how they need and trace that instead? This theft of fan-created work needs to stop.

Finally, someone gets it. i.e. Artists don't get to decide much.
Except both artists are likely working under similar timetables so it shouldn't be surprising that the same short cuts are taken. On editorial, Larroca gave us SW Klingons and that was deemed fine by the editors.

It only seems to be a couple artists doing this, because currently the main Star Wars line isn't tracing (anymore) and has beautiful art. Same with Aphra and Target Vader.

    I'm sorry what?

First of all, if I hadn't already known this was EckhartsLadder - a YouTube voice I generally respect and who has provided lots of excellent content over the years - there's no way I would have given this video my time. Clickbait-y thumbnails and "INSULT TO FANS!" histrionics are way beneath him.

Second - I respect EL's opinion regarding the artwork (and don't really disagree with it), but I truly wish we could all strike the word "lazy" from discussions about this sort of thing. Comic book artists are not "lazy." That's not why tracing happens. As vncredleader correctly pointed out, corners get cut for editorial reasons, not because Luke Ross (of all people!) simply can't be bothered to do it right. The better question to ask might be why Allegiance was on a weekly release schedule, and if it really had to be on such a schedule, why it wasn't given to an artist who might be better able to produce quality work that quickly?

Loving all the support for artists going on here. I seriously saw someone call Luke Ross a "lazy sod" like WTF? No one deserves to be called that, even someone like Leifeld, but in particular someone as amazing as Ross

I will give Larroca some slack, and yeah he is certainly not as much to blame as editors, however Land will legit use the same face he took from porn and trace it several times on a single page. Like there is working under time pressure, and then there is excessive tracing to the point of it becoming your style. I think they are larger parts of the problem cause they provide a means to get things done even cheaper for editors, but yeah it is of course on the company for using them as a means to make the standards change. It is systemic and 100% not a personal failing of theirs, but I do think some blame is shouldered by especially egregious examples. Like flat out using stock photos, particularly for a lead character like that Aphra example.

My main takeaway is I ain't taking that Mon Cala Defense Fleet seriously/literally. I hope a reference book retcons its composition. [face_laugh]

The Second Sister flies a TIE Interceptor as her personal craft, only 5 years after ROTS. I wonder if it's meant to be a prototype

A couple Resistance Reborn items I'd like to mention. There is a chance that some of those ships in the trailer, namely the smaller ones may be from Ryloth. We were given the Rycrit-class, a smaller ship that was called a Stealth model and called "A Nice ship" by Leia. And the Can-cell class fighter. Not many details about either but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Well that's just it, Ross is a very good artist. Skilled, experienced - there's a real sense of "well, if he is having to do that what is going on over there?"

Is she flying it in the game as well as the comic? (as discussed comic art can be in error, video games not so much).
It really shouldn't be possible. In 4 BBY in SW:Rebels we have the first flight of the new TIE advanced v1 prototype. Vader's TIE advanced x1 is a later prototype using technology from the v1. And we know the TIE interceptor was designed when it was decided that the TIE advanced x1 would be too expensive for mass production. I see no way the TIE/Interceptor can be around in 14BBY, recons would be required.

I wonder where Kuat-Entralla fits into all of this. Did KDY (along with KSE) "officially" go out of business only to secretly supply the First Order in secret factories? Production of KDY frigates such as the Nebulon-C probably stopped way before TFA, and the FO wouldn't want its shipbuilders to supply its enemies anyway.

The retcon would be that this isn't an actual Interceptor, but a singular ship, like Vonreg's Interceptor which at this point seems to be a specialty Starfighter.

Kuat Systems Engineering and Kuat Drive Yards are both Kuati companies, but entirely different organizations. Both ended up producing for the New Republic Navy and the various member world PSF's, with the RZ-2 A-wing and Nebulon-C frigate being very popular. Hell, based on the trailer for TROS alone, we know Neb-C's are numerous, as we see nearly two dozen!

KSE seems more directly NR-supporting, while KDY presumably underwent some tough times in the era of peace and disarmament. Regarding Kuat-Entralla, there are two likely theories:
    1. Pro-Imperial KDY boardmembers and engineers left the company to found Kuat-Entralla as a way to gain First Order contracts.
    2. KDY secretly supported Kuat-Entralla, while still pretending to be a member in good standing of the New Republic.

That is disappointing. The Inquisitors used the TIE advanced v1from 4BBY and that is clearly designed to hark back to the Eta-2 Actis interceptor (folding wings) which is also what we know Vader is flying in 14BBY (Tarkin novel). In my opinion the 2nd sister should also be piloting an Eta-2 (which would look far more original too being seen in imperial gray and black.)

Yeah, in general I have been annoyed with the jump to movie stuff right after the Clone Wars, and missed seeing Republic designs in Imperial Colors

Imperial fighter progression should be like this.

    Low production special fighters:
    Eta-2 Actis >> TIE advanced v1 >> TIE advanced x1

    Mass production fighters:
    Alpha-3 Nimbus >> TIE/LN fighter >> TIE/IN interceptor

In Legends, did the Imperials ever complete the transition to the TIE Interceptor after Endor, or were they still using the TIE/LN predominantly?

What is also bad is how the faces and other skin has a near photorealistic texture, right next to line and plain shaded clothes and hair.

That guy kept showing up and he never stopped being a Klingon. He's just a Klingon. There's no explanation for that, but there's also no arguing it.

I'm pretty sure sources as old as the original "Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels" actually claimed that KSE is a subsidiary of KDY (just like Rothana) rather than an entirely separate company, which also makes sense when you consider that their Delta-7 interceptors were meant to look like OT star destroyers out-of-universe. The question would be how indipendent it is from the mother company (probably well enough given its secret dealings with the Resistance).
I like both theories on Kuat-Entralla by the way, and I'd wish we'd get more official informations on those shady subsidiaries that support the First Order.

A very interesting tidbit from the in-game databank entry for the Scrapper Guild (not a real spoiler but I'll hide it just in case someone doesn't want to read even this)
it's said that since the rise of the Empire the Guild has focused "on an expensive (emphasis on this word) but successfull campaign to do away with all vehicles, weapons and technology associated with the Republic". This would explain why don't see a gradual technological upgrade like in Legends, why so many OT vehicles are there very early in the timeline and why the Inquisitors don't fly Eta-2s like someone suggested. Five years have passed and it's heavily implied that Venators, LAAT/is and AT-TEs, which are all seen in Bracca ready to be scrapped, are already meant to be out of service. Also, while not fleet-junkie related, this would explain the quick phasing out of Phase-II armor and clone troopers themselves.
