All right, if we're going to nitpick over how shuttles fit into an Arquitens-class light cruiser...I want to know where on a TIE Defender and B-wing the missiles and torpedoes go. And how does a Missile Boat carry 80 missiles? :p

The imperials have figured out TARDIS tech.

X-Wing Alliance update mod has a version of the T/D with obvious launchers. Looks kind of neat. Can’t find a screenshot right now.

Wasn’t there a legends diagram that pointed at the chin as launchers?

Lots of interesting vehicle designs in the recent high republic comics.

Something I particularly noticed is that at first the Nihil used a single fighter design, more or less identical to the pyke patrol ship (being based on the same concept art), but they seem to have a larger and more ragtag collection of fighters now, though the stormships stick to same double-block look.

For the Defender you can actually see the "warheads" the middle of the wings (where targeting sensors would be on an Interceptor) in Rebels, so they are not really stored inside. The B-Wing is large enough to store the torpedoes inside the "gun pod" and wings, as seen in the cross sections books.

Yup. The warheads are not seen on the "regular TIE Defender" when it appears - and when the Elite TIE Defender appears, the whole missile is visible on the outside, rather than stored inside the wing modules.

Regular TIE Defender - with holes where the missiles would attach on the Elite TIE Defender:

Wow, never noticed those missiles on the Elite model before.

There are holes there on the non-elite version.

Quick question, since google is failing me because 99% of the results talking about BOBF, where did the name Firespray-31 come from, WEG?

    Always a safe bet.

After digging around on my own somewhat, I do think it is likely from Galaxy Guide 3: Empire Strikes Back in 1989.

The hardest thing for me to apologize in Star Wars was tossed at me by my nephew recently.

    Again.

    The Carrack Light Cruiser.

It's dimensions, complements, mission profiles...all sound reasonable and fine.

And then you see the artist rendering from WEG, or art by others on it since.

They look like pictures of a tiny little runabout shuttle.

The specs claim the ship has a height of 75 meters.
Look at that bridge view screen.
Even if we say it is only a quarter the height of the ship...that is 18.75 meters...that is a 61ft tall piece of transparisteel!
Does a ship that small need seven or eight decks of bridge space looking out a common viewport?
How battle hardened is such a design? Seems more likely to be a showcase on a cruise ship then the bow of a warship.

Clearly someone charged with rendering the thing got the specs wrong, or, more likely, someone took an image from a pile that "kind of" met the look of things. They gave it big numbers to suit a certain fleet mission profile, and the picture was arbitrary nonsense to be forgotten.

30 years on, it still drives me absolutely nuts.

Aye. I absolutely headcanon that those are missile positions that the similarly-configured Interceptor doesn't normally use because of supply-line/sensor-package issues and impact on performance... of course, they could be adapted to carry sensor pods, maybe a multi-role hardpoint...? [face_thinking]

Seems like a good guess... Galaxy Guide 3 seems plausible as @MercenaryAce says - the only big earlier sources would be the Poster Monthly and the Velasco Guide To The Star Wars Universe... [face_thinking]

Yeah, the Carack has a huge bridge with multiple decks behind that viewport, either by retcon or original intent - the best pictures of an interior are aboard the Vigilant, the ship trying unsuccessfully to stop Han being Han in "Routine", way back in Star Wars Tales #2...

I dug a pic of this off the internet a few days ago in an off-boards chat, but I can't find the link quickly now. Bueller?

The Nebula and Endurance both got their appearances completely changed...surely it wouldn't be as radical for some artist to retcon the Carrack's viewport into being much smaller?

It would be a pretty simply to update the Carrack's bridge design, just change the current window to be dark hull plating and add some smaller windows for the actual bridge. That is what I did with my attempt at modeling the Carrack.

One thing I've noticed about the side view illustrations in those WEG sources is that the windows are specifically and explicitly colored black. In the case of the Carrack, the section at the front that would become part of the window is not colored black.

But the Carrack's massive bridge viewport is seriously awesome...

Linking to a tweet because I can't find the original pic online quickly... :p

Kind of reminds me of how one of the new species in the Thrawn UR books puts oversized windows on their ships as a challenge to their foes.

What is your preference for how Slave 1's seating is arranged? I know what is in the shows is what is canon...but I prefer this set up from the original cross section book. I think it works better that when landed you are actually sitting upright instead of laying on our back.

Could do without the unnecessary and disturbingly graphic sequel bashing.

It would be nice to have more cross-sections for Star Wars. But alas, I think they'll hold off for a decade :(

All they will probably do is repackage Complete Cross Sections...again. I would love them to make either 1 or 2 books that cover the animated and live action series. I am still irked that we did not get the Naboo Skiff from RoTS...and a Clone Wars Cross Section book could still get us that is it appeared in the series.

I wasn't paying attention to the characters...just the cross section itself. Sorry about that.

This is something I've been ranting about for a long time...a whole lot of ships out there that are just name dropped with no art or stats. There are also a lot of ship picture with no names. They should dig through the archives and start pulling concept art and pairing up with ship classes.

I actually kinda like it the other way...less detail is fine, at least when it comes to storytelling purposes. As an example of the opposite extreme, in Recovery there's a scene of a New Republic frigate laying mines around Coruscant. No information whatsoever about what kind of frigate it is...just "frigate". It's a big galaxy, and even with something like the New Class program, there's still going to be a huge variety of ships in the PSFs and even the main galactic navy. I think the nice thing about the book format is that you don't need to provide any visuals, and you can leave things to the reader's imagination. Whereas in something like Star Wars: Rebels, they either have to allocate parts of the budget to model new ships, or just keep reusing the Arquitens-class over and over. On the other hand, it would completely defeat the point of this thread if everything were reduced down to generic frigates, cruisers and corvettes, so... :p
