Unless it's our first canon example of a literal Imperial Navy? :p

It's mean to evoke old industrial shipyards, IMO. It's like driving by the old Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard or Mare Island Shipyard. Actually, more like Mare Island, as San Francisco's foggy waterfront looked a lot like that back in the day.

I hate to be nitpicky (but I live in the Bay Area, and a museum I volunteer at has a ton of stuff from Mare Island, so forgive me), but the Mare Island Naval yard is located ~40 miles north of San Francisco at Vallejo (though it is part of the San Francisco Bay Area, so it's in the neighborhood). There is/was a San Francisco Naval Shipyard, though I don't know much about it.

But yeah, Mare Island was one of (if not the) largest shipyards on the West Coast, though it mostly focused on tenders, submarines, destroyers, frigates, and cruisers. Only one battleship (USS California) was built there. A second battleship (USS Montana) was going to be built, but the project was scrapped in the inter-war period. One other ship that's noteworthy was the collier USS Jupiter, which was later converted on the East Coast as the USS Langley (US navy's first aircraft carrier).

    Back onto that picture though,

after looking at it again, it really does look a lot like the Oakland Port on a grey, cloudy day (sans Star Destroyer, of course :p ). That crane on the left side looks almost exactly like a bunch of the cranes out there. Honestly, I would not be too surprised if that was the inspiration.

Yeah, I meant to say "Bay Area" weather (the fog does reach up to Vallejo), but you're correct. Actually, the port of Oakland is a better analogy!

Nope. Ever since Galactic Battlegrounds, I have been very interested in star wars aquatic units. Sadly they don't see to show up much.

Also, the Trade Federation has a lot more than everyone else for some reason.

Incidentally, the Oakland cranes were Lucas' inspiration for the AT-AT walkers.
I'm partial to San Diego myself however.

The oil refinery across the Bay in Benica, CA is where George Lucas got the idea for the center sphere of the Trade Federation battleships:

Northern California is the literal home of Lucas & Lucasfilm, plus the source of many inspirations. ;)

Stop stealing star wars ships from us you filthy northies, the south of California will rise again! Just like this Mon Calamari cruiser lifting off from the Birch Institute!

Fun fact: I know someone who used to work at that refinery. Though that was back when it was owned by Exxon, not Valero.

I think those spheres are pretty common at refineries. Seen them at a couple of others in the area. Also, I always thought of the domes on top of a Star Destroyer's command deck when I looked at them. But yeah, they really do look like landed Trade Fed. battleship cores. [face_thinking]

Funny that you should say that today...I'm in the middle of a completionist project for the old Insiders. Pablo's Ask the Master Feature in 81 details a bunch of aquatic vehicles.

I love this shot. The Raddus is probably the biggest non-Imperial ship we've yet seen on film, but this shot emphasizes just how small the Resistance fleet is; little specks against a planet that is itself a speck in the galaxy. It immediately sets up the small physical scale of TLJ's story, and shows just how tenuous the heroes' situation is.
