WarmNyota_SweetAyesha, thank you for sticking with the story. I hope you like the next chapter.

    Chapter 27

The next morning Skylar woke up, still feeling worn out from the past few days. Thoran had let her sleep in. When she woke, she saw that Thoran and the boys were not in the apartment. A piece of flimsy on the bedside table told her they were in one of the training dojos and to rest up.

She went into the refresher and felt a wave of nausea overcome her. She leaned over and vomited. After a few minutes, she felt somewhat better. She decided to keep this to herself. With everything going on, she did not want to cause her husband or their padawans to worry. After dressing and making a cup of herbal tea to take with her to soothe her stomach, Skylar went to the High Council room. By the time she arrived, she was feeling herself and dismissed her earlier nausea as a fluke.

Yoda was waiting for her, "Well you did."

Skylar bowed to the Grandmaster and knelt in front of him, "Thank you, Master Yoda. I hope I can be of service to the Council even more."

"Changes you wish to be made," Yoda said to her. It wasn't a question; it was a statement.

Skylar considered the wise Master and knew she could speak freely, "I do. Starting with the AgriCorps. My senses tell me we will need all the Jedi we can get in the future. Can we really afford to send away our future?"

"Changes to AgriCorps we will not make," Yoda told her. "Not yet." He added cryptically.

Skylar raised her eyebrow. It intrigued her that Yoda said 'yet.' It also gave her hope.

"More to say have you," Yoda asked her.

"I feel that attachments would help the Jedi Order. Possibly make us more approachable to the rest of the galaxy."

It was no secret that over the years, there was much political gossip regarding the Jedi Order, their secretive ways, and their power in the Galactic Senate. While they were meant to be peacekeepers and guardians, the Order was slowly evolving into something else. It did not sit very well with Skylar, and it gave her a feeling of foreboding.

Yoda placed his clawed hand on her shoulder and told her, "Time for changes now is not."

"Not yet," the younger woman said hopefully.

Yoda ears pointed up a little, but he did not respond to her statement. "Spoke with the High Council I have and agree they do for your next step in the Order."

    "Next step?" Skylar asked.

Yoda continued, "A seat available there is on the Council of Reconciliation. A Consular you will be."

Skylar's mouth opened slightly, to be asked to sit on a council, especially at only thirty years old, was an honor. It would also serve as a stepping stone for the High Council.

"I am truly honored, Master Yoda," Skylar told him. "But what of my Padawan?"
Yoda replied, "train him you will. Teach him the ways of peaceful resolutions. Powerful he will be."

She went home to find her husband. She must have still had a slight look of shock on her face. Thoran met her in the entryway of their apartment, "Are you alright?"

"I think so," she said. "Yoda has asked me to sit on the Council of Reconciliation."

Thoran looked at her with pride, "that is quite an honor. What did you tell him?"

"That I'd think about it of course," Skylar said in a deadpan voice and a straight face.

Thoran laughed, and she joined in. He went on to say, "I am so proud of you. You are one step closer to making the fundamental changes you want."

"I am, but it still will not be so simple," Skylar said. "While Yoda listens to me, he is not ready to embrace the changes the Order may need to survive."

Thoran looked somber, "do you really think it could come to that?"

"Always in motion the future is," Skylar said in an endearing imitation of the beloved Grandmaster. She turned serious again, "But yes, I have a very bad feeling about how the Jedi are being utilized in the Senate."

Thoran nodded, "I feel the galaxy at times is losing its confidence in us. We are meant to be their protectors, but we are being pulled in many different directions."

"If we ever lose the confidence of the galaxy entirely, we will indeed have lost," Skylar said sadly. "We take their children, promising to care for them."

Her husband added, "only to send them away to dangerous places for a future of servitude if they are not chosen by the very young age of thirteen."

Skylar smiled. Her husband understood her. "Exactly," she said. "Yoda is his usual cryptic self. He asks me to speak freely, but he does not do anything with my suggestions."

"You know Yoda does not ask anything just for amusement," Thoran told her. "He remembers everything you have ever told him."

Skylar was thoughtful, "when I told him I wanted to see changes in the attachment rules and the AgriCorps, he told me 'not yet.' I found encouragement in that."

Her husband took her hand and said, "then there will be a chance for those changes in the future."

"I hope so," Skylar said. To herself, she said, I hope it will not be too late.

    *******************

Several weeks later, an uneasy Qui-Gon and a tired Obi-Wan returned to the Temple. Skylar was there to meet them. "Obi-Wan," she said, extending her hand to the boy, "I am Skylar Malin, Master Jinn's first apprentice. I am so happy to finally offically meet you."

Obi-Wan shook her hand and smiled. He wished she was Qui-Gon's only apprentice. Because if that was the case, maybe it would not be as hard to reach Qui-Gon's soul and have the older man warm up to him. "It's nice to meet you, Master Malin."

"No need to be so formal when it is just us," Skylar told him warmly. "You can call me Skylar. After all, you are now my little padawan-brother."

Qui-Gon raised an eyebrow but did not say anything. He turned to Skylar and said, "I heard about your promotion to the Council of Reconciliation. You will make a fine consular."

"Thank you, Master," she replied with a slight bow. "I owe it all to your training.

Out of the corner of his eye, Qui-Gon saw three initiates peeking around the corner. He recognized them as Obi-Wan's friends. The human male, Garen Muln, the Mon Calamari female, Bant Eerin, and the male Dressellian, Reeft. Obi-Wan noticed them too, and he looked at Qui-Gon hopefully. The Master sighed and said, "go and spend time with your friends, Obi-Wan. I expect you back in our quarters by the eighth hour for meditation."

"Yes, Master," Obi-Wan said happily, "Thank you, Master." He took off to join his friends.

Skylar watched him meet his friends, who seemed happy to have him home. She also noticed the dark circles under the boy's eyes. "How did the mission to Gala go?"

"We did not go to Gala immediately," Qui-Gon told her. "Our pilot was the brother of Obi-Wan's friend, Guerra."

Skylar was surprised, "the one who saved Obi-Wan's life on the mining platform? This sounds like it's going to be a long story." They began walking, and Skylar linked her arm in Qui-Gon's waiting for him to begin.

"The pilot's name was Paxxi, he detoured us to Phindar," Qui-Gon told her. "The Phindians needed help to bring down the Syndicat."

Skylar nodded, "this must have been a trying mission. I could not help but notice the dark circles under Obi-Wan's eyes. Your's too."

"Trying is not even the word," Qui-Gon sighed. "Phindians that objected to the Syndicat's rule were subjected to a memory wipe."

A slight gasp escaped Skylar's lips, "like you would wipe the memory of a droid? That is terrible."

"They tried to do it to Obi-Wan," Qui-Gon said quietly. "And while they kept him captive, I was helpless. I wanted to storm the facility, but I had to wait."

Skylar stopped walking and looked at her former Master, "but you obviously arrived in time. He is safe now."

"Yes, he is safe," Qui-Gon replied. "but I did not arrive in time. I was too late. They attempted to wipe his mind and he was clever enough to play along."

Skylar told him, "he is incredibly strong with the Force to be able to withstand a memory wipe. How did he manage this?"

"He said the river stone I gave him for his birthday helped him erect impenetrable shields in his mind." Qui-Gon told her.

Skylar shook her head, "wait, you gave him a rock for his birthday?" Her face was a cross between humor and disbelief.

"A rock from my home planet," Qui-Gon told her in a defending tone. "A force-sensitive rock that saved his mind and his memories."

Skylar linked her arm in Qui-Gon's again, and they continued their walk, "only a Master with years of training should have been powerful enough to erect mind shields to withstand something like that. How is he faring?"

"I suppose well enough," Qui-Gon said.

Skylar shook her head, "well enough? Master, haven't you spoken to the boy at all about any of this, starting with Bandomeer?"

"I checked him over, making sure he had no physical injuries. He briefed me on his experience on Phindar," Qui-Gon said. "We went on to Gala, and he was instrumental in seeing that mission was successful."

They went into the gardens and sat on a bench in a quiet corner. Skylar asked, "but have you spoken to him? I mean, really talk to him about the past couple of months of his life? He has had several traumatic experiences."

"That he has," Qui-Gon agreed. "We speak during training."

Skylar was exasperated, "have you opened up to him? Told him everything about Xanatos? Spoke with him on how to handle the traumatic experiences he has been through?"

"He is fine," Qui-Gon said half-heartedly.

Skylar could not help but sigh, "have you at least made arrangements for him to see Master Nik-Ka?"

"I have not," Qui-Gon said. "He seems to be handling everything very well. I don't feel it is necessary."

Skylar wanted to argue, but held her tongue, "I beg to differ," Skylar said as neutral as possible. "Having your first kill at such a young age leaves scars on one's soul."

Qui-Gon knew she was right, but felt that Obi-Wan was strong enough to handle it on his own, "I will watch him and will contact the Halls of Healing if I think there are residual effects he is unable to control."

Skylar was not satisfied, "why can't you open yourself up to him? Your bond is already strong. Imagine how powerful it would be if you let him fully in."

"I am his master, and he is my apprentice," he told her again, half-heartedly.

Skylar looked her former Master in the eyes, "Master, I only tell you this because I love you. You must open yourself up to him. If you don't, it can cause serious damage to your bond and your relationship."

"Skylar, maybe one day we will be friends." He did not tell her that he was afraid of not just betrayal, but of losing the boy as well.

    *****************

The next day, Skylar was practicing with Zac in one of the training dojos. She noticed Qui-Gon enter with Obi-Wan, who still had circles under his eyes and again looked tired.

By all accounts, the boy was extremely gifted with a lightsaber. But today, his movements were off, and his footwork was a little sloppy. Zac sometimes had the same issue after a hard mission. Skylar would handle it with mediation and extra rest as Qui-Gon had done for her when she was a child. She was not prepared to see and hear how Qui-Gon dealt with these situations now.

"Obi-Wan," Qui-Gon said harshly, "you left yourself wide open several times. If we were on a mission, you could have been killed."

Obi-Wan's face turned bright red as a group of padawans gathered to watch the public rebuke. He said in a low voice, "I am sorry, Master. Thank you for your guidance. May I please be excused?"

Qui-Gon nodded his head, and Obi-Wan quickly left the training room. Only then did Qui-Gon realize that his public admonishment had created an audience and several padawans, one being Bruck Chun was snickering. He turned to his friends and said, "Once a loser, always a loser."

Qui-Gon gave the boy a sharp glance, and the group went back to sparring with his friends. Skylar still overheard them laughing about Obi-Wan's humiliation.

Skylar turned to Zac and told him, "Go home, I will be there soon." He bowed and watched her walk toward Qui-Gon. He heard her say, "Master, a word please." Qui-Gon nodded, and the two left the dojo speaking in low tones.

Once Skylar was confident they were alone, she asked, "are you satisfied?"

"I don't know what you mean," Qui-Gon told her.

Skylar shook her head in disbelief, "did you really need to reprimand him like that? Especially in front of his peers?"

"His footwork was off today, and his moves were sloppy," Qui-Gon told her. "I do not wish to see him harmed on a mission."

Skylar shook her head, "Master, your soul is as frozen as the landscape of Hoth."

"Skylar, please do not tell me how to handle my student," Qui-Gon said to her. "I will train him as I see fit."

Skylar looked at him sadly, "You embarrassed him in front of those bully him."

"Bullies are all over the galaxy," Qui-Gon replied. "It will be good for him to learn how to deal with adversity." He remained steadfast, even though he knew deep down Skylar was right.

Skylar could not comprehend why her former Master was behaving this way as she told him, "If you do not shape up, Master, you could do severe damage to that dear boy!"

Skylar's appointment is well-deserved and does put her in a position to implement changes, and like her and Thoran, I hope they won't come too late! I can absolutely understand Qui-Gon's holding back but it's doing more harm than good for everyone. Skylar continues with her patient, wise counsel. She really is a true indispensable friend.

WarmNyota_SweetAyesha, thank you for your review and for feeling that Skylar's appointment is deserved. She is patient, but she knows that Qui-Gon is doing more harm than good. Hope you like the next part.

    Chapter 28

Later on that day, Skylar was on her way to the archives when she heard a disturbance in one of the training dojos. Stepping inside, she saw Obi-Wan and Bruck standing before Master Drallig. Bruck was smirking, much like Xanatos did at that age. Obi-Wan had his head down, and when he raised it, Skylar saw a fresh black eye.
"I will contact Master Jinn to come and fetch you," Cin told Obi-Wan.

Obi-Wan said quietly, "Yes, Master." Even with his strong shielding, Skylar picked up on his anxiety.

Stepping forward, she said, "Cin, would you mind if I escorted Obi-Wan back to his and Master Jinn's apartment?"

"That would be much appreciated, Skylar," the battlemaster told her. "Please say to Master Jinn I will leave Obi-Wan's punishment to his excellent judgment." As Skylar placed her hand on Obi-Wan's shoulder to lead him out, she heard Cin tell Bruck, "We will see the creche master and the Council for your punishment."

Once they were alone, she asked him kindly, "what happened, Obi-Wan?"

Obi-Wan gazed at her warily and said in a low voice, "nothing."

She knew that Obi-Wan may not trust her yet. She would need to tread carefully, "anything you tell me, Obi-Wan will be kept in confidence. I will only tell Qui-Gon if I feel you are in danger."

"Bruck told me Qui-Gon wasted his time finding me on Bandomeer," Obi-Wan finally admitted. "He said it would have been better if I died."

Skylar put her arm around his shoulders, "You know that isn't true."

"I don't know what I believe," Obi-Wan admitted. "Qui-Gon barely talks to me. I think he cares. He checked me over for injuries when he found me after the Syndicat thought they wiped my memories."

Skylar's heart went out to the boy, "he cares, Obi-Wan, please believe that. What else did Bruck say."

"He blames me for Qui-Gon not picking him," Obi-Wan said in an embarrassed voice. "That I was a washout and did not deserve a chance to be a Padawan. So I pushed him."

Once again, Skylar inwardly cursed the AgriCorps. Drave Krusnic blamed her for the same reason. How many other wayward initiates would use their anger and become rogue Force Users in the future? How many of them were doing that now?

"Is that why you got the black eye?" She asked, her eyes filled with compassion.

Obi-Wan nodded. It did not take long to arrive at Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's apartment.

Qui-Gon was waiting for them, "Obi-Wan, I just received a com call from Master Drallig. Were you in a fight with Initiate Chun?"

    "Yes, Master," Obi-Wan said quietly.

Qui-Gon walked briskly over to him. He took Obi-Wan's chin in his hand and raised the boy's face so he could look closely at the black eye. Even though his touch was gentle, Obi-Wan still flinched.

Qui-Gon removed his hand and went to the refresher to get some bacta cream. When he returned, he softly rubbed some on the bruise. "I will be leaving tomorrow for three days on a short mission, Obi-Wan. I trust you will behave while I am gone and not get into any more fights."

Skylar saw the panicked look on Obi-Wan's face, "a mission? Can't I accompany you?"

"Outside of your classes, you will be confined to our quarters," Qui-Gon told him. "You must learn how to handle adversity without it coming to blows."

Obi-Wan was desperate for Qui-Gon to listen, "but master, it wasn't my fault. I did not start it."

Skylar internally grimaced, Qui-Gon had heard that from Xanatos so many times.

Qui-Gon said, "It does not matter who started it, Obi-Wan. It matters you were involved at all. Now I need to go to the archives to research my mission. I expect you to meditate and be in bed before I return home."

"Yes, Master," a crestfallen Obi-Wan replied. He did not even notice Skylar saying good-bye to him.

Skylar left with Qui-Gon, "Master, don't you feel you were harsh? Are you going to leave him behind while you go on a mission? He will be worried about you."

"There is no reason for him to worry," Qui-Gon told her in a dismissive tone. "I am merely delivering and witnessing a new trade treaty for Chandrilla."

"So why won't you take him with you?" She asked him.

Qui-Gon replied, "you have pointed out that he seems exhausted since Bandomeer. I thought it would be helpful for him to remain at the Temple, concentrate on his studies, and rest."

"You are going to let him believe he is being left behind because of his altercation with Bruck Chun," Skylar said, not bothering hiding the disdain in her voice. "He isn't the first padawan to get into a fight and he won't be the last."

Qui-Gon said calmly, "exactly. I will not allow him to fight with other students without consequences."

"Bruck Chun bullies him unmercifully," Skylar told him. "Maybe you need to talk to Obi-Wan about the things that are said to him."

Skylar was surprised Qui-Gon did not even ask what she meant. He simply said, "If Obi-Wan wants to tell me, he will."

    *************
The first evening Qui-Gon was gone, Skylar went to his and Obi-Wan's apartment. Obi-Wan answered the door, surprised, "Master Malin, what can I do for you?"

She smiled at him, "what did I tell you about when it is just us, Obi-Wan?"

"Sorry, Skylar," he said with a grin.

Skylar told him, "grab your cloak, we are taking you to CoCo Town for dinner."

"Master Jinn has ordered me to stay in our quarters," Obi-Wan said, his smile disappearing.

Skylar assured him, "I will contact him and let him know you were with me. It will be fine."

Obi-Wan did not look convinced, but he went and retrieved his cloak. They met Thoran, Kaleb, and Zac at the main entrance of the Temple.

Zac smiled, "Hey, Obi-Wan. We are glad you can join us."

"It is good to see you again, Obi-Wan," Thoran told him, shaking his hand. "Are you still at the top of the class in Galactic History?"

Obi-Wan blushed, "I think so, the grades for the quarter are not out yet. They come out later this week."

"That is good," Thoran said. "Have you met my Padawan, Kaleb Faln?"

Obi-Wan shook his head, "It is good to meet you, Padawan Faln." This was the proper way to greet a senior padawan.

Kaleb laughed, "you are right, Sky. He is very polite. Please just call me Kaleb. If you call me Padawan Faln I think I'm in trouble or something."

The group got onto one of the Temple transports and gave their destination to the driver. They did not notice a figure in the shadows watching them.

The figure had a hood pulled up around his head. He pulled out a comlink, "she just left with her husband, an older padawan and two kids." He transmitted a holo he had taken of the group.

The person on the other end of the hologram recognized his former rival, Kaleb, immediately. He glanced briefly at the brat, who was Skylar's padawan, and his eyes went to Obi-Wan. Xanatos said safely from his palace on Telos IV, "Oh yes, the youngest is my dear former master's new apprentice."

"I can follow them, try to get a clean shot," the hooded figure said."

Xanatos shook his head, "too risky. Thoran is one of the best fighters the Temple has. Kaleb is pretty good with a lightsaber too."

"I won't get caught," the figure insisted.

Xanatos became angry, "I took a considerable risk arranging your escape from the prison the Jedi put you in nine years ago. We will bide our time."

"You promised me she would die," the man said.

Xanatos gave a smile to the man, "relax, Drave. She will. We may even take out Qui-Gon's new padawan."

"But when?" The nine years in the prison had not softened him. He still wanted revenge on Qui-Gon and Skylar.

Xanatos told him, "Soon. But we will need to bide our time. This will require careful planning."

"What am I to do in the meantime?" Drave asked angrily.

Xanatos laughed, "there is another initiate who is angry as well. His father is my treasurer. Make contact with him and recruit him to our cause."

    "What's his name?" Drave asked.

Xanatos said, "Bruck Chun. Reach me when you make contact with him. Continue to watch Skylar. Get to know her routine. If we need to assassinate her in the Temple, we will need Bruck's help."

The transmission ended, and Drave Krusnic blended into the shadows ready for his next task.

Across town, the group had no idea of the pending danger. They entered Dex's Diner, and Dex immediately grabbed Skylar in a hug that lifted her off the ground, "Skylar, so good to see you."

As he set her down on the ground, she laughed, "it's good to see you too, Dex."

Dex moved onto Thoran, Kaleb, and Zac, "It is good to see all of you too. The Besalisk opened all four of his arms and grabbed all three of them in a hug. He then noticed Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was standing there, clearly not knowing what to think.

Skylar placed an arm around Obi-Wan and said, "Obi-Wan, this is Dexter Jettster, the owner of this diner and responsible for the best bantha burgers on Coruscant. Dex, this is Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon's new Padawan."

Dex laughed heartily and grabbed Obi-Wan into a hug as well, "It is good to meet you, Obi-Wan. Where is your Master?"

Obi-Wan was embarrassed, but Skylar said, "Qui-Gon has a brief mission to Chandrilla, so we are fortunate to have Obi-Wan join us."

They sat at a booth, Dex asked, "Thoran, Skylar, Jawa Juice?"

"Oh, yes," Thoran said, "thank you."

Since Kaleb was now twenty-two, he said, "I'll have one too."

The thought of Jawa Juice made Skylar's stomach turn, "not me tonight, Dex. Could I get a Meiloorun Juice?"

Zac said, "me too." He turned to Obi-Wan, "you will like this."

Obi-Wan nodded and gave a real smile, finally feeling comfortable. He said, "okay."

Thoran told Dex, "bantha burgers and fried tubers all around."

The dinner was lively, and the padawans were doubled over in laughter while listening to Dex's stories of their masters as padawans. He even told some stories about Qui-Gon. Obiwan listened intently. He could not imagine his serious and stoic master as a young man who was compassionate and also liked to have fun.

After dinner, they returned to the Temple, and Skylar was feeling tired. She did not tell this to Thoran. Instead, she said, "Thoran, could you please escort Obi-Wan home? I will contact Qui-Gon and let him know we took him with us." Thoran readily agreed, and the boys went with him, still laughing with Obi-Wan.

Once they had left, Skylar went to the com center in their apartment. She keyed in Qui-Gon's number, and immediately, her former master came into view, "Skylar, is everything alright? Has Obi-Wan done something?"

"No Master," Skylar said with a sigh, "he has not done anything wrong. In fact, he is a model padawan. I just wanted to tell you we lifted his confinement tonight and took him to dinner at Dex's."

Qui-Gon folded his arms, "I told him he was confined to our quarters."

Skylar looked at him, "and I said it would be fine if he was with Thoran and me. Surely you can not fault him since he had the permission of two masters, one who sits on a Council." She had decided when she accepted the appointment that she would not pull her 'Council Card' often. However, she felt in this case it was justified.

"Did he enjoy it?" Qui-Gon finally asked with a small smile on his face.

Skylar saw this and felt some relief, "he did. He did not know what to think of Dex at first but warmed up to him pretty quickly. I'm surprised you have not taken him there yet."

"There has not been time," Qui-Gon said. He knew this was a lie. There had been time, he just chose not to spend it wisely with his padawan. Skylar knew it was a lie too, but she again had far too much decorum to point it out.

Skylar nodded, "Well maybe after Chandrilla, you can take some time to do some of the small fun things you did with me when I was his age."

"Perhaps," Qui-Gon replied. "Thank you for taking him with you tonight and for letting me know. Good night."

Skylar said, "Good night, Master. He is a delight to be around."

Qui-Gon nodded, and the transmission ended. She went to the refresher to get ready for bed and felt another wave of nausea. This time she did not vomit, but she felt dizzy. She waited a few minutes, and it subsided just in time. Thoran and the boys were home. Skylar went into the living area in her pajamas and said, "that was a delightful evening. But seeing I have a very early Council meeting, I will be retiring."

The three said good night, and she was asleep as soon as her head rested on the pillow.

    Chapter 29

Skylar took her seat in the Council of Reconciliation council room. She was feeling better, and she was relieved there was no dizziness or nausea that morning. Skylar greeted the other masters as they arrived. She smiled as one of Qui-Gon's friends took a seat next to her.
Master Aari Koor smiled at her and said, "Skylar, welcome to your first council meeting."

Skylar smiled at the Nautolan master and said, "It is a great honor to have been offered the appointment. I'm also excited to be serving along side all of you."

"Qui-Gon must be very proud," Aari told her. They stopped speaking as Master Yoda and Windu arrived.
Both looked troubled, and Skylar knew whatever was troubling them would likely be the highlight of the meeting.

Plo Koon started the meeting, "Master Yoda and Master Windu bring us news regarding the world Melida/Daan."

"Last month, we sent a Jedi Master to Melida/Daan," Master Windu informed the group. "It has not gone well, and the Melida faction is holding our Jedi."

Master Yoda continued, "Another team we will send." He turned to Skylar and said, "work with the Republic Diplomatic Corp you will. Children are involved now."

"Children?" Skylar asked in a confused voice. "How are children involved?"

Mace Windu answered, "The children of the planet have started a war against the elders of the world. They call themselves, 'The Young.'"

"And the Jedi who the Melida have captured," Skylar asked. "What is their condition?"

Yoda and Mace exchanged glances. Yoda replied, "caught in the battle between the Melida and Daan. Blinded she was."

"What is the Jedi's name?" Skylar asked. Her heart went out to the Jedi, whoever they were. To lose one's sight must be devastating.

Mace Windu sighed. He knew this would not be easy for the newest member of the Council of Reconciliation. "It is Tahl."

Skylar felt her stomach drop and quickly released her emotions. She remained calm, "Tahl? I will do whatever it will take. Do you need me to travel to Melida/Daan to broker peace talks?"

"A more experienced consular we need. Return tomorrow Qui-Gon does." Yoda told her. "He and Obi-Wan go they will."

Deep inside, Skylar felt this would not be a good idea, "Master Yoda, I am not sure Qui-Gon is the right choice."

"Think this why?" Yoda asked her.

Skylar kept her voice even, "for starters, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are such a new team. I am not sure they are ready for an arduous mission."

"Their bond developed before they were Master and Padawan," Mace told her in a stern voice.

Skylar nodded, "yes, it did. But by Qui-Gon's admission, he has not fully opened up to Obi-Wan. That and the fact that Tahl and Qui-Gon had..." she hesitated.

"A relationship," Plo Koon finished for her.

Skylar sighed, "Yes, Master. Perhaps another team can go. Thoran and Kaleb are free. Or perhaps Master Tholme and his apprentice Quinlan Vos."

"No," Mace told her. His voice told her there would be no debate. "Missions like this strengthen the master and padawan team."

Yoda looked at her with his kind eyes, "learn to trust one another they must."

Skylar had a very bad feeling about the decision but knew she would not win this debate. Instead, she resolved herself to prepare Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to the best of her ability.

"Who is my contact at the Diplomatic Corps?" Skylar asked.

Mace glanced at his datapad, "Rane Miu. She is expecting you after the meeting is adjourned."

    **************

That afternoon Skylar arrived at the Senate and was escorted to the upper floors. The senate guard led her to a conference room across from Supreme Chancellor Kaj's office.

Rane Miu stood up, and the Mirialan extended her hand, "Master Malin, it is so good to meet you finally. Chancellor Kaj has said good things about you and your former Master."

"It is good to meet you as well Ambassador Miu," Skylar said, accepting her hand. The women sat at the table and simultaneously pulled out their datapads.

Ambassador Miu consulted her datapad and said, "we were able to make contact with the Melida leader, Wehutti. He has assured they are treating Master Tahl humanely."

"I should hope so," Skylar said calmly. Inside she was screaming. Tahl had been like a second master to her. A mother figure and someone who she could always speak candidly. "What of the Daan?"

Ambassador Miu gave a slight shrug, "there has been radio silence to the Republic. They are likely planning their next attack on the Melida."

"Well, we will need to get Tahl out of there as quickly as possible," Skylar said, studying her datapad. "The Jedi Council has informed us there are children now involved."

The Mirialan nodded and replied, "The Young. They are mostly orphans whose parents died in the war. For an underground youth organization, they are fairly well organized and led."

"Who is leading an army of children?" Skylar questioned.

Ambassador Miu pointed to her datapad, "the most peculiar pairing of leaders."

Skylar looked at the other woman's datapad. She saw a young girl, no more than thirteen-years-old, "such a young girl. What do we know of her?"

"Her name is Cerasi," the ambassador told her. "Her father is Wehutti." She slid her finger across the datapad to bring up the picture of a boy a little bit older. "This is Nield," She continued. "His parents and three brothers were killed in the war when he was younger. A cousin raised him for a short while, however, she was killed later on."

Skylar thought of Melida/Daan's children and how they were suffering for a war that they did not choose to be a party too. Without realizing it, she compared their plight to that of the children of the Temple. The Order kept the youngest safe, but would they always be able to? Could war and danger one day threaten the younglings of the Temple?

Finally, Skylar said, "this situation is tragic all around. Our priority will be to get our Jedi to safety. Once that is achieved, we will attempt to gain the trust of The Young."

"That will be quite the task," the other woman said. "As you can imagine, they do not trust outsiders."

Skylar nodded in agreement, "Qui-Gon has been very good with children in the past. He will also have his padawan with him, who is their age."

"That may work," the ambassador agreed. "Perhaps the padawan can find some common ground with them. It may be our best bet."

Skylar consulted her datapad again, "It may be our only option. It does not seem either faction is willing to negotiate thus far."

"If the Jedi can win some confidence," Miu added, "perhaps we can use that to our advantage. "

But would the elders listen to their children? Skylar thought. After all, the war had been going on for a very long time. Many, including children, had already been killed. She felt uneasy about the situation but had no choice to agree with the ambassador. At this time, it was the best choice they had.

"Thank you for your assistance, Ambassador Miu, "the information will be invaluable to the Jedi," Skylar gratefully said as she stood up to leave.

Ambassador Miu pushed a button on her comlink, "Captain Stryder, could you please see our guest safely to her transport?"

A moment later, a young senate guard was in the doorway. He bowed slightly, "It would be an honor, Master Jedi."

"Thank you, Captain Stryder," Skylar said. She nodded to Ambassador Miu and lifted the hood on her cloak. She followed the guard to the transport that would return her to the Temple. Once they stepped outside, Skylar felt an uneasy presence in the Force. She stopped a moment and glanced over her shoulder. Scanning the crowds, the young Jedi did not see anything out of the ordinary. She gave one more cursory look before she turned back and continued to follow Captain Stryder.

In the senate building's shadows, a dark figure was crouched low and hidden by decorative statues. He inwardly cursed himself and thought that was too close. Drave Krusnic could not let Skylar or any of the Jedi realize he was watching her. If the Jedi knew, all would be lost. He would return to prison, that was if Xanatos did not kill him first.

    ************
Skylar joined Master Yoda and Master Windu in the High Council room. She knew Qui-Gon had returned early and would be meeting them soon with Obi-Wan.
As she entered, Yoda was already in his seat.

Mace turned to her and said, "Skylar, you can sit here." He gestured with his hand to the seat to Yoda's left, the place where Master Ki-Adi-Mundi sat. She hesitated a moment. Did she dare to sit in the chair of a member of the High Council? Skylar glanced at Yoda, and he gave her a slight nod.

As she sat, she felt a surge of belonging in the Force, "thank you, my Masters." She pulled out her datapad.

"Enjoyed working with you Ambassador Mui did," Yoda told her approvingly.

Mace Windu added, "word got to Chancellor Kaj. She is rathered impressed with your expertise in research."

"Interested in your career, she is," Yoda told her. "Good for you this will be."

Before Skylar could respond, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan entered. They took their place in front of the three council members. Qui-Gon felt a surge of pride run through him as he saw his former student sitting next to the Grandmaster and Master of the Order.

Obi-Wan gave her a small smile. She beamed back at the teenager.

"Master Jinn, you are your apprentice will be sent to Melida/Daan," Mace informed them. "The situation dire and we will need you to negotiate for the freedom of one of our own who has been injured."

Qui-Gon glanced at Skylar. The concern on her face was evident. He turned back to Mace, "who is the Jedi?"

"It is Tahl," Mace responded. "She was caught in the crossfire of a battle and has been blinded."

Through their bond, Skylar could feel his dismay even though his face remained passive. Skylar looked at Obi-Wan to see if he picked up on the change of Qui-Gon's mood. The boy was looking up at his Master with a puzzled look on his face.

Qui-Gon slowly nodded, "we will leave immediately."

"Walk with you Skylar will," Yoda told him. "Brief you on intelligence, she will."

Skylar matched Qui-Gon's brisk walk back to his apartment. Obi-Wan followed closely behind them. She knew Qui-Gon would already have a travel bag packed, as he always did. In her time as Qui-Gon's padawan, a travel bag was ready at all times. This way, they could leave at a moment's notice.

"I did not know Tahl was sent to Melida/Daan," Qui-Gon said. "Did you?"

Skylar shook her head, "I have been busy preparing for my new appointment to the Reconciliation Council, I have not spoken to her. " She felt immense guilt of not reaching out to Tahl before she left the Temple.

"What have you learned," Qui-Gon asked as he punched in the access code to his quarters.

Skylar told him, "I will send the information to your datapad. The Melida faction is holding Tahl. Their leader has ensured the Republic she is being treated well."

"Obi-Wan, grab our travel bags," Qui-Gon ordered his padawan. "What else?"

Skylar replied, "The Daan is ready to attack at any moment. But now there is a third faction involved."

    "A third?" Qui-Gon asked, confused.

Skylar finished sending the information to Qui-Gon's datapad, "the children of the Melida and the Daan have waged war against the elders."

"This is disturbing news," Qui-Gon said. His hand went to his beard as he thought for a moment. "We are there to rescue Tahl, not to fight a war."

"They call themselves The Young," Skylar went on to explain. "We need to broker a peace agreement if at all possible."

Qui-Gon shook his head, "Our priority is Tahl's safety. I'm not sure what we can do. After a decade of conflict, the Melida and the Daan do not seem willing to stop."

"Perhaps if they see their children involved, they will." This comment came from the doorway of Qui-Gon's bedroom, where Obi-Wan now held two travel bags. He moved into the living room beside his Master.

Skylar smiled at the boy. She was impressed with his intelligence. "The Council hopes so, Obi-Wan."

"How can I help?" Obi-Wan asked in an earnest voice.

Skylar moved to Obi-Wan and looked him in the eye, " If we can find common ground with The Young, we may be able to bring long-needed peace."

"And since Obi-Wan is in their age group the Council feels he may be the best chance to find that common ground," Qui-Gon concluded.

    Skylar said, "Exactly."

"We will do our best," Qui-Gon told her. "However, I will not allow it to get in the way of bringing Tahl to safety."

Skylar took a deep breath, "Master, do you believe Tahl would want you to risk the mission in order to save her?" Skylar knew the answer was no. She also knew Qui-Gon knew this too.

"The mission is saving Tahl," Qui-Gon firmly said. "Who is our Council contact?"

Skylar responded, "It will be me. I'm working closely with Ambassador Miu of the Diplomatic Corps. We will provide intel as we can."

Qui-Gon was surprised. Usually, the contact for a critical mission such as this would be a member of the High Council. He was impressed they trusted Skylar with the task, and he had complete confidence in her ability as well. "Very well. We will be in contact soon. May the Force be with you."

As he and Obi-Wan exited the apartment, Obi-Wan said, "Good-bye, Skylar."

"Good-bye, Obi-Wan," Skylar said, giving him a brief hug. "May the Force be with you."

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan turned left from the apartment to take the lift that would take them to the transports. Skylar turned right for the lift that would take her to the High Council chamber.

As she exited the lift, she took a shortcut through the Room of a Thousand Fountains. As she turned the corner on one of the paths, she felt a foreboding feeling come over her. She glanced around and saw Bruck Chun staring at her. She gave him a brief nod and kept walking.

When she was out of sight, Bruck pulled out his comlink and said, "I'm getting her routine down pretty good. My friend had desk duty outside the HighCouncil."
"What have you learned, Bruck?" The voice on the other end said.

Bruck grinned, "I learned that she has a standing meeting every day this week at the Diplomatic Corps. She will be taking the midday transport between the Temple and the Senate."

"That is when we do it," the voice replied. "Keep a watch for the next couple of days. Make sure nothing changes. We may only get one shot at this, and we need to make sure it works."

    Superb updates!

I love how Skylar, Thoran, Kaleb, and Zac have given Obi-Wan the chance to unwind and have a good time in a warm, lively atmosphere. No better place for that than Dex's.

Bruck is the worst kind of bully, insinuating and pushing all the insecurity buttons. :(

Yikes, Tahl in need of rescue (hopefully in time) [face_worried] and Xanatos ... he really needs to get his comeuppence.

    Chapter 30

About a week after Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan left, Skylar heard from Qui-Gon. She was on her way to the High Council to meet with Yoda. She was taking a shortcut through the gardens and sat on a bench to receive the transmission.

"The situation is more complicated than we initially thought," Qui-Gon told her. "Wehutti wanted to betray us; however, the Young stopped us from walking into a trap. The Melida wanted to take us hostage to push the Republic to side with their cause."

Skylar watched the hologram of her former master, "the Melida do not know the Republic."

"I would agree. It appears they wanted more Jedi as pawns in this war. The Young wish for the war to be over," Qui-Gon told her.

Skylar watched the hologram of her former master, "it is tragic all the Young know is war. I cannot imagine the children of our very Temple in a situation like this."

"So many have been killed. An entire generation," Qui-Gon replied. "All that is left of their people is the Young and the Elders. All those my age or even your age, are gone."

"How is Tahl?" Skylar asked, her voice filled with concern.

"Tired and malnourished. She needs the healers of the Temple. With the help of the Young, we were able to rescue her," Qui-Gon told Skylar. "That being said, I did not like being blackmailed by the Young's leader, Neild. He outmaneuvered me to go along with one of his plans. It seemed that Obi-Wan enjoyed that."

Skylar asked, "What do you mean?"

"Obi-Wan has already started to bond with them, especially Cerasi," Qui-Gon replied with apprehension. "She is the one which provided cover for us while we rescued Tahl.

Skylar thought of the hologram Ambassador Miu showed her of the young girl, "that was very brave of her. Tell me about these children?"

"They are far too thin, ill equipped and wear rags," Qui-Gon said sadly. "But you can't help but get caught up in their spirit. They are well organized and their stategies well thought out. They are effective."

Skylar thought momentarily, "do they have a chance in getting the elders to listen to them?"

"From what I have witnessed, I have to say it is doubtful," Qui-Gon said. "Obi-Wan wants to stay and help the Young. He is not happy we are leaving tomorrow. He felt we did not do enough to stabilize the planet.

Skylar was not surprised. Obi-Wan was pure in heart, "His goodness makes him a magnet for others. It also makes him vulnerable to acting out of emotion. How is he handling this mission?"

"I fear he is getting too involved," Qui-Gon said. "I've seen this before when Xanatos got involved in his father's war on Telos IV."

Skylar shook her head, "Xanatos was involved for his own glory and benefit. Obi-Wan is doing it for the exact oposite. How are you and he getting along."

"I continue to be amazed how, even under pressure, he can strategize and calculate odds. Never losing his sense of humor. That being said, I can't help but worry Obi-Wan is becoming too attached," Qui-Gon said with a sigh.

Skylar told him, "Master, it is up to you to keep him grounded. Have you spoken to him about any of this?"

"I have not," Qui-Gon admitted. "I have been too busy with Tahl and her needs. I'm not even sure where Obi-Wan is right now."

Skylar's mouth slightly opened in surprise, "what do you mean you don't know where he is?" This was not like Qui-Gon. He was always aware of where she was when she was Obi-Wan's age.

"I suppose he is with Cerasi and Neild," Qui-Gon replied. "It's natural he would want one last outing with his friends."

One last outing? Skylar said to herself in disbelief. To her former master, she said, "Master, you are on a war torn planet, and your thirteen-year-old padawan is alone with an army of children who he feels strongly about helping. This is not like you."

"I suppose I have been a little preoccupied with Tahl," Qui-Gon admitted.

Skylar said, "Master, you need to find your padawan and speak with him about how important it is to remain neutral. He had a huge heart, and without guidance, he could find himself involved in a war he had not intended to join."

Qui-Gon nodded, and the transmission ended. Skylar sighed, and she tried to shake the terrible uneasy feeling she had.

"Troubled you are," Yoda said from behind her.

Skylar turned to greet the grandmaster with a bow and said, "I am, Master Yoda. I'm concerned about Obi-Wan."

"Spoke with him and Qui-Gon earlier I did," Yoda told her as they walked into the Council room. "Warned Obi-Wan I did of not getting too involved."

Skylar sighed, "Master Yoda, with all due respect, Qui-Gon is the one who needs a lecture."

Yoda sat in his seat and looked at Skylar, "Feel Qui-Gon is not guiding Obi-Wan?"

"Master Yoda," Skylar began, "We know Qui-Gon is a gifted teacher. However, after Xanatos he is distant. Obi-Wan is far too caring and impressionable to be left alone to his own devices with an army of children."

Yoda's ears perked up, "leave tomorrow they do. Trust you I do to speak to Qui-Gon regarding your concerns. Time it is for former student to teach the master."

"Yes, Master," Skylar said softly, glancing around as if she thought someone was watching them. This was silly, of course. Yet she could not shake the uneasy feeling she had.

Yoda studied her, "Qui-Gon is not all that worries you."

It was not a question. It was a statement. "Yes," Skylar admitted. "I keep sensing something dark inside the Temple."

"Your instincts serve you well," Yoda counseled. "Allow them to overwhelm you, you must not."

Skylar gave a slight laugh, "a difficult task if I'm to be mindful."

"Your instincts listen to them you will," Yoda assured her. "But be mindful of the present and all of the Force around you."

    ***********

Skylar made her way back to her apartment. On her way there, she felt someone following behind her. She turned and saw Bruck, who seemed engrossed in a conversation with another initiate. The human girl, Siri Tachi. The two younglings turned down the hallway that would take them to the dining hall. Skylar shook her head, annoyed at her sudden paranoia. She did not notice Bruck glance at her with contempt in his eyes.

Punching in the access code to her apartment, she entered and found Thoran waiting for her. "How was your day?"

"Exhausting," she told him. "I spoke with Qui-Gon. I'm worried he is neglecting Obi-Wan."

Thoran handed her a cup of tea, "neglecting how?"

"Obi-Wan is bonding with the Young," Skylar told him. "When I spoke with him, he did not even know where Obi-Wan was."

Thoran shook his head in disbelief, "doesn't he realize a young padawan can start to have sympathy for a cause if their Master does not keep them focused?"

"I think he realizes it," Skylar said, sipping her tea. "I just don't think he is worried about it. His concerns are with Tahl and Tahl only."

Thoran put his hand on her knee, "I can understand his concern for Tahl; however, his first priority is his padawan. That is the commitment we make when we take an apprentice."

"That is the promise we made to one another," Skylar said. "We have had some dangerous missions. We have always had each other's back. But our Padawans come before one another."

Thoran nodded, "If anything was to happen to one of us, the padawan is always the first priority."

"How was your day?" Skylar asked, hoping to shake the anxious feeling she had along with nausea that had returned.

Thoran pulled out a datapad, "I have been asked to cover Galactic History for the rest of the term starting next week. Master Alad is getting along in age. He is talking about retiring at one of the AgriCorps bases."

Skylar knew the AgriCorps was important. She just didn't believe children who aged out should be sent there. Retiring Jedi could live out their days surrounded by the living Force. Even those who sustained injuries during a dangerous mission could find peace and recuperate at an AgriCorp base. It was something she would like to see implemented in the future.

"That means you will be stuck at the Temple," Skylar said, nudging him. "Are you sure not going on missions will suit you."

Thoran shrugged, "I've been assured it is not permanent. Just until they find a replacement."

"You will have Obi-Wan when he returns," Skylar said.

Her husband nodded, "We should speak with him in private, away from Qui-Gon."

"I'm not sure Qui-Gon will approve, or even allow," Skylar sadly replied.

"He does not need to know. But something tells me Obi-Wan needs a confidant right now."

Skylar knew Thoran was right. He always had sharp discernment. Qui-Gon at one time did as well. But that seemed to have disappeared after Xanatos. Just one more thing Xanatos stole from Qui-Gon. It was sad that Obi-Wan would now bear the brunt of Xanatos's actions.

    ****************

Skylar entered the Council of Reconciliation and immediately felt the tension. Yoda looked sorrowful, and Mace Windu seemed to be troubled as well. She took her seat, and the meeting began.

"Skylar, we have asked the other members of this Council to not join us today," Plo Koon told her. "We need your help."

Skylar took a deep breath, "Yes, Master. What has happened?"

"Disturbing news from Qui-Gon we received," Yoda said in a grave voice. "Left the Jedi Obi-Wan did."

Skylar almost jumped up out of her chair, "left? What do you mean he left?"

"Obi-Wan took the starfighter without permission the night before they left," Mace Windu said. "He managed to neutralize some "critical targets of the Melida/Daan, but he broke Qui-Gon's trust."

Skylar waited a moment before responding, "had Qui-Gon's attention been on Obi-Wan, he would have been able to step in and take control of the situation."

"Disagree with you, we do not," Yoda admitted.

Skylar shook her head, "how is it that he left? Why didn't Qui-Gon order him to leave with them?"

"He did order him, Skylar," Mace said concerned. "Obi-Wan wanted to use the starfighter again. The negotiation was broken by the Elders and they attacked the Young."

Skylar was becoming nauseous again, but pushed it down, "Qui-Gon helped the children, right?" As the words left her mouth, she knew the answer. The answer broke her heart.

"Help, he did not," Yoda replied, his eyes filled with despair. "Argued they did."

Mace Windu continued, "Obi-Wan wanted to take the starfighter to destroy the three starships the elders had."

Skylar replied, "the Melida/Daan starships are ancient technology. It would have taken little time with a skilled pilot such as Qui-Gon or even Obi-Wan."

Yoda and Mace exchanged glances and turned to Skylar. "Need your help we do," Yoda said.

"I am ready to do anything needed," Skylar said. "I can contact Ambassador Miu and ask for Republic assistance. I can gather my padawan and leave for Melida/Daan immediately."

Mace shook his head, "while it may come to that, that is now what we need now. We need you to speak to Qui-Gon when he returns."

"Talk to him about what?" Skylar said, her frustration showing. "How a thirteen-year-old does not have a choice when they are sent to the Service Corps, but they can make a choice to join a war movement?"

"Make him see he was wrong, you must," Yoda told her.

Skylar could not say no, of course. She now considered Obi-Wan her little brother, and in a way, she felt as though she let him down. She needed for Qui-Gon to see reason so she could bring the youngest member of her family home.

    Chapter 31

Thoran found her in the garden close to the spot where he proposed. She was shielding from everyone but him. She was engrossed in her datapad and looked up as he approached. Without a word, he sat down next to her. She sat her datapad off to the side. "Obi-Wan left the Order," she told him in a gloomy voice.

Thoran had a deep intake of his breath, "what happened?"

"We were right to be concerned about Obi-Wan's bond with the Young," Skylar told him, feeling the nausea rise again. "He wanted the Jedi starship to destroy the Elder's fighter ships. Qui-Gon said no."

Thoran hid his anger, "Had Qui-Gon assisted him; they would have been able to destroy the fighters with no threat to the Jedi ship. Melida/Daan technology is outdated."

"I know," she said with a sigh. "They argued, and Obi-Wan gave Qui-Gon his lightsaber..." She hesitated and looked over her shoulder. She stood up.

Thoran stood with her, and he glanced into the foliage. Seeing a figure hiding there, he moved forward and grabbed the person by the shoulder and pulled him out. "Initiate Chun," Thoran said sternly. "What were you doing in there?"

"Spying on us?" Skylar asked, and when the boy did not respond at first, she said, "spying on me?"

Bruck looked gleeful as he asked, "is it true? Did Oafy-Wan leave the Jedi? So he could not cut it after all."

"Obi-Wan has always shown dedication to the Order," Skylar defended her younger brother to the other boy.

Bruck laughed, "So dedicated, he abandoned his Master. Too bad, Qui-Gon chose him anyway. He must have a soft spot for pathetic lifeforms."

Thoran crossed his arms, "Again, I will ask. what were you doing in there?"

"I was coming back from the beach," Bruck said defiantly. "This is a shortcut."

Skylar knew he was lying. The spot where he was hiding was not near any paths or grottos. She felt something dark surrounding him. She sensed the same aura surrounding Xanatos years earlier. Skylar took a step closer to Thoran and said, "get back to your dormitory."

He gave an almost mocking bow and took off toward the lift that would take him to his dormitory. Skylar watched him go deep in thought. Thoran roused her from her thoughts, "What did you mean when you asked him if he was spying on you?"

Skylar responded, "ever since I accepted the appointment to the Council of Reconciliation, I have had a feeling of foreboding. I sense something inside the Temple. Something dangerous. Or someone."

"I have never doubted your percipience," Thoran told her as he took her hand. "I want you to be careful. Until we know what he was up to."

Skylar looked at the thick foliage he was hiding in and glanced behind it. It was close to the lake, a place where she spent many free hours as a child. But at this time of day, it was usually deserted since initiates and padawans were attending their daily course instruction.
"I will check to see what class he was supposed to be in this hour," Skylar said. "But I don't want him to know we suspect him of something."

Later that afternoon, Skylar found herself in Master Ilena Xan's training dojo. Skylar watched with admiration as Master Xan, also nicknamed the Iron Hand, went through her katas. An expert in unarmed combat, she was without peer in her art. A moment or two passed before Master Xan saw she had a visitor, "Skylar, it is good to see you. Can I help you with something?"

"Yes, I was curious about whether Initiate Chun made it to this class today."

Master Xan continued her katas, "he was at first, and then he asked to go to the healers. He said he twinged his shoulder in lightsaber practice."

"Thank you, Master Xan," Skylar said with a bow. "We had to discipline him recently, and I wanted to make sure his attendance was up to par."

She left Master Xan to her practice and started her way home. She could check her datapad for visits to the Halls of Healing; however, she had a feeling Bruck's name would not be on the list.

In an underground tunnel at another part of the Temple, a cloaked figure stepped out of an airspeeder. The tunnel was isolated and unused—a perfect place to hide an airspeeder.

"What have you learned?" The older man asked, lowering his hood to reveal Xanatos' scarred face.

Bruck could barely hold back his glee, "Oafy-Wan left the Jedi Order."

It was usually difficult to surprise Xantos, but this was news he was not expecting. "He left?"

"Yes, he stayed behind of Melida/Daan to help the child army there," Bruck said. "Maybe when Master Jinn arrives, he will select me. I am better than Oafy-Wan."

This statement angered Xanatos. He grabbed Bruck by the front of his tunic and lifted the boy off the ground, "He will never take you, and you belong to me now. I will teach you the ways of the dark side, and we will be unstoppable." He dropped Bruck but not before he quietly took his lightsaber.

Bruck landed hard on his feet, but he did not fall, "what is it you need me to do?"

"Go to my speeder," Xanatos said, motioning towards the ship that he brought to the Temple. "There is an underwater satchel. Bring it here."

As Bruck carried out the order, Xanatos quickly opened his lightsaber's hilt and hid a listening device inside. He was done with his task before Bruck even reached the speeder. When Bruck brought the satchel to him, Xanatos gave him his next set of instructions. "I need you to steal a toolbox from the servo-utility unit. I will need it to bypass and sabotage the Temple's security systems."

Bruck nodded, "yes, Master. What else?"

"The holographic files and computer records containing your fellow students' names from A to H. This will include your file, which we will destroy," Xanatos told him. "The Jedi are holding you back. I will help you discover your true power."

Bruck felt a wave of anger overcome him. He knew Xanatos was correct, "Yes, Master. Thank you, Master."

"You are welcome, my Apprentice," Xanatos replied to him, further manipulating the boy. "I also need to be able to blend in with the other Jedi, so bring me a mediation robe of a Jedi instructor and a Padawan sporting kit that is well stock with rebreathers."

Bruck wondered how he would be able to pull this off undetected but knew he had to. He stood tall and was determined not to disappoint his new Master. "I will see to it, Master."

"I am counting on you, Bruck," Xanatos said evenly. He motioned to a small alcove just beyond the speeder. A figured made his presence known. Bruck jumped in surprise but quickly recovered.

Drave Krusnic dropped his hood and stood next to Xanots, studying the boy in front of him. Xanatos said, "This is Drave. He will be monitoring your comings and goings. He will also require the schedule of Skylar Malin. He has some unfinished business with her."

"I can get it," Bruck said without thinking. It would require more spying, but he was confident he was up to the task at hand.

Xanatos gave one of his sick smiles and said, "I hope so, my young apprentice." He handed Bruck his lightsaber, "here; you dropped this."

The younger boy took it with a sheepish look on his face. Xanatos continued his manipulation of the boy, "if you pull this off, we will travel the Melida/Daan. If the war does not kill Oafy-Wan, we will."

    Two Days Later

Skylar was at the landing pad when Qui-Gon arrived home with Tahl. She was joined by healers who were ready to take over the care of Tahl. As the ship's boarding ramp lowered, Qui-Gon exited with a weak Tahl leaning on him. Skylar gave a slight gasp as she saw the scar that marred her beautiful face and the milky eyes which no longer could see. She let her feelings go into the Force and stepped forward, "Tahl," she said warmly, embracing the older woman.

"Skylar," Tahl said in her mischievous voice, "thank the Force you are here. Can you please tell your old Master to quit hovering over me like a loth cat over her litter?"

Skylar giggled and grinned at Qui-Gon, who suppressed a smile, "We both know it would not do any good."

"He should have been hovering over Obi-Wan," Tahl said in a sharp tone. Qui-Gon stiffened at the accusation but said nothing. Skylar stepped aside as the healers came forward with a hoverchair.

"I am capable of walking," Tahl insisted as gentle hands moved her to the hoverchair.

Healer My'Al smiled and agreed, "Of course you can, Master Tahl. But Master Che insists. You don't want to get us in trouble with the chief healer now, do you?"

"I suppose not," Tahl replied in a resigned tone. "I will save my ire for Vakara. But be warned, the past few days have put me in a terrible mood."

Qui-Gon knew she was speaking of what happened with Obi-Wan. Tahl had insisted they return for him and assist him, but Qui-Gon was too stubborn and did not heed her requests. The healers whisked Tahl off to the Halls of Healing, leaving Qui-Gon and Skylar alone.

"What happened," Skylar said quietly, wanting her Master to open up to her.

Qui-Gon shrugged and began walking, "Another Jedi betrayed me."

"Master, you know that is not true," Skylar gently admonished. "While he is a Jedi, he was mostly a confused boy caught up in the moment."

Qui-Gon worried she was right but remained unwavering, "he stole the starship to destroy some key targets to help his new friends. He did not take Tahl's well being into consideration."

"Or he was sympathetic towards a group of children who have only known war," Skylar said. "Could you imagine the children here in this very Temple fighting for survival?"

Qui-Gon stopped walking and looked at his former apprentice, "of course not!"

"Yet, you left a child of this Temple on Melida/Daan doing just that," Skylar pointed out.

Qui-Gon was now annoyed, "he chose to stay. My primary mission was to find Tahl and bring her to safety."

"There was also the task of mediating a peace treaty," Skylar reminded him. "You are a gifted consular—one of the Temple's best. Yet, you did not finish the task on hand."

Qui-Gon now was embarrassed, but he did not let her know that; he answered, "the situation on Melida/Daan is not stable at this time."

"Stable?" Skylar said with a disbelieving laugh, "how stable was Obi-Wan when you decided to leave him behind?"

Qui-Gon did not know how to answer that. Instead, he said, "I must meet with the High Council, Skylar."

"I know," Skylar said. She stumbled a bit as dizziness overcame her.

Qui-Gon placed a steadying hand on her arm, "are you alright?" There was concern in his voice.

"I'm fine," Skylar said, shaking off his hand. She almost added; It's a tragedy you did not show this concern towards Obi-Wan.

Qui-Gon replied, "I can escort you to the healers."

"I have been busy with my new appointment, training my apprentice, and extra tasks for Yoda," Skylar said firmly. "I neglected to eat today. I am fine."

Qui-Gon was not convinced but decided not to push the subject, "I suggest you eat and rest. We will talk later." He turned and walked away. Skylar wondered how she could ever convince him he was wrong.

Excellent reading of Tahl's return [face_relieved] and still able to tell Qui-Gon what's what as is Skylar. He acts like he's not taking it in but I get the feeling something of what Skylar says is getting through a bit. [face_thinking]

Life has gotten in the way and this story, that I started back in 2001, has been neglected again. Hope you all like the update.

Skylar continued to keep tabs on the situation on Melida/Daan and worked very closely with Ambassador Mui. The Young had done very well and had even won the war. Obi-Wan was now a planet leader. Qui-Gon called him a fool, but something told Skylar that deep down inside he was impressed. Obi-Wan had the potential of becoming a great leader and would have become one of the Order’s best negotiators, had Qui-Gon cultivated that potential instead of ignoring him. Had he opened up to the boy, instead of pushing him away. While the war seemed to be over, many had perished in the battles. The Republic was prepared to lend aid and work with the newly forming government, even if those government leaders were young teenagers.

Skylar and Ambassador Mui had prepared for a meeting via hologram. In the hologram, Obi-Wan stood in the middle of Nield and Cerasi. He had lost some weight and his clothing was dirty and torn. But he was alive, and that was what Skylar cared about the most.

Ambassador Mui spoke first, “We are looking forward to working with you and ensuring Melida/Daan’s rightful place in the Republic. Now that the war is over…”
“Oh, the war is not over,” Nield interjected in a bitter voice. “It will not be over until we destroy the Hall of Evidence and every piece of history this forsaken planet has known. Only then will it be over.”

Skylar saw the shock and Obi-Wan’s eyes as he glanced at Cerasi who shared the same look of disbelief.

“You don’t mean that, Nield,” Cerasi said imploringly. “No matter our history, we must do what we can to preserve it.”

Nield held up his hand and firmly said, “my mind is made up. It will be done.”

Obi-Wan attempted to negotiate, “Nield, maybe we can discuss this further?”

“There is nothing to discuss,” Nield replied unwaveringly. “I am the one who was elected the new governor and I am the head of the New History Squad.”

Obi-Wan tried again and placed his hand on his friend’s shoulder, “Nield, let’s not make any hasty decisions. It has been a harrowing few weeks…”

“Few weeks?” Nield said angrily shaking Obi-Wan’s hand off his shoulder. “It’s been a few weeks for you. But not for us. For us, it’s been our whole lives.” He then turned around and stormed out of the room where the holo meeting was taking place.

Skylar gave Obi-Wan and Cerasi a moment to collect their thoughts and asked, “I take it neither of you was aware of this?”

“No,” Cerasi said. Her hands began to shake. “My mother’s hologram is in the Halls of Evidence. “I go there when…” Her voice cracked.

Obi-Wan took her hands in his. He turned to her and looked her in the eyes, “we will not let him do this. I promise, Cerasi. We will speak with him and help him see reason.” The girl nodded her head. Obi-Wan turned back to the hologram, “Master Malin and Ambassador Mui, I’m sorry the meeting was not as effective as we were all hoping.”

Skylar felt a sense of foreboding, “Obi-Wan, please be careful. Please contact the Council with any new developments or if you need assistance.”

Obi-Wan nodded but knew it would be inappropriate for him to contact the Council since he was no longer a Jedi, “Yes, Master Malin.” He longed for the familiarity they had while he was still at the temple, but felt it was best to be formal. He turned to Cerasi again and the last thing Skylar saw before the hologram went dark was Cerasi crashing into Obi-Wan’s chest crying and Obi-Wan’s arms wrapping around her protectively.

On the transport back to the Temple, Skylar thought about all that transpired. She even thought of convincing the Council to let her go to Melida/Daan. Obi-Wan had Cerasi, however other than that, he was alone. An outsider. If something would go wrong, he would be the first the Young would turn on. Nausea rose in her again and she breathed deeply to center herself. Skylar also saw the way Obi-Wan and Cerasi looked at each other. They had developed feelings for one another. How deep those feelings went, she did not yet know.

Skylar stepped off the transport. As soon as she did, she felt the danger. She heard a blaster shot and she jumped out of the way just in time. Skylar turned just in time to see a figure dive into the shadows and her hand moved to her weapon. She felt a pang in her side. A glance showed she was not hit and she probably just twinged her muscle. Before she could ignite her lightsaber, she was surrounded by Temple guards and their leader, Cin Drallig. Six of them stood around her, their lightsaber pikes ignited and ready to defend.

Cin knelt by her side, “Skylar, are you injured?” He asked as he helped her to her feet, his sharp eyes glancing around their surroundings.

“No, I’m fine,” she said. The twinge had subsided and she allowed herself to be briskly led back into the safety of the Jedi Temple. The Council had been notified and Yoda and Mace Windu were there when she entered the great hall.

Mace Windu nodded to Cig and the guards, “My thanks for your quick action.” He turned his attention to Skylar, “Are you injured, Master Malin.”

“No, I am fine,” she told him. “My concern right now is the situation on Melida/Daan.”

Thoran arrived in the hall and came to her side, closely followed by Kaleb and Zac. Not even a second later, Qui-Gon had arrived too. ‘News travels fast.’ Skylar thought sarcastically. Thoran took her by the shoulders, “Are you injured”?

This time, Skylar lost her patience, “I have told everyone I’m fine and have not been hurt. But the situation on Melida/Daan is not over as we initially thought.”

“An assassination attempt was made,” Yoda said with concern. “Find out who is responsible we must.”

Mace Windu nodded, “this is very troubling indeed. It can also be connected to the thefts we have recently had.”

    “Thefts?” Skylar asked confused.

The sing-song voice of a navigation droid was heard drawing nearer, “fifteen steps to the right, and you will have arrived.”

“TooJay,” Tahl said sharply, “I know how to get to the great hall without your meddling. I told you to stay at the apartment.”

The droid kept his cheerful demeanor, “but you could have fallen.”

“Or I could send you to the scrap room,” Tahl said as she joined the others. With a wry tone, she said to Skylar, “I can sense you are not injured, so I will not ask you.”

Skylar had always admired Tahl’s deadpan sense of humor, “Thank you, Talh. But what about thefts?” She asked turning her attention back to Mace Windu.

“Let’s move up to the Council chamber,” Mace said as more Jedi arrived in the hall, whispering about what had happened just outside the Temple’s door. He turned to Cin, “please take your guards and do a sweep of the area. Perhaps you can find some clues on this would-be assassin.”

The group was silent as they took the lift to the top level of the council chamber. Once they were inside, Skylar asked, “What thefts and what has been taken?”

“At first it was ordinary items we thought could have been a prank from some initiates,” Mace replied. “A couple of meditation robes, some sporting kits, and a tool kit. But now, the items being stolen are much more valuable.”

Skylar once again felt foreboding, “what else is being taken?”

“Artifacts,” Mace responded solemnly. “Also holograms and records of some of our students.”

Yoda sat in his council seat, “Stolen why the items were, know we do not. Hrmmm.” He turned to Skylar and continued, “Before the attempt on your life, escaped from prison we learned that Drave Krusnic has.”

“How could that even be possible?” Thoran demanded. He stepped up next to his wife protectively. “I thought the Citadel was the most secure prison in the galaxy.”

Mace sighed, “that it is. However, whoever arranged for this escape was well connected.”

“While Drave remains at large, insist you stay inside the temple for your safety we must,” Yoda told her.

“What?” Skylar exclaimed, “I can’t do that. My work for the Council or Reconciliation requires me to be available to leave at a moment’s notice. Not to mention my work with Ambassador Mui.”

Mace cut her off, “be that as it may, you will be staying inside the Temple. You will continue your work over hologram.”

“We should also be concerned for the situation on Melida/Daan,” Skylar argued, “The situation is not over as we initially thought. Obi-Wan will not be able to control the situation on his own and needs our assistance and support.” She emphasized the word support as she turned her head to look at Qui-Gon.

Qui-Gon sighed, “Obi-Wan is no longer a Jedi. He made his choice.”

“Obi-Wan is a child,” Skylar shot back. “He made his decision out of emotion because you did not…”

Mace held up his hand, “that is enough, Skylar. Our mind is made up and you will heed our orders and stay inside the Temple. It is not our place to go to Melida/Daan without first being asked to intervene.”

“As information becomes available, report to me you will with Melida/Daan,” Yoda told her. “Ambassador Mui understand she will.”

“Since when do Jedi hide in the Temple when one of our own is in danger?” Skylar asked. “I will honor your order, however, I do not agree.” She turned to leave, determined not to let anyone in the room see her frustration.

Thoran watched her leave, “If there is a plan to capture Drave,” he said, “I want in.”

“Understandable that is,” Yoda said. “Keep you informed we will.”

“Tahl and Qui-Gon,” Mace said, “we want you to investigate these thefts. It is possible Drave has some help on the inside.”

Yoda tapped his walking stick gently on the floor, “disturbing this is. Be diligent we must.”

“You failed”, Xanatos hissed. “Now, the Jedi know someone is in the Temple.”

Drave could not bring himself to meet Xanatos’s eyes, “She is better than I thought. She sensed the danger immediately.”

“You were supposed to anticipate that,” Xanatos snarled. “We will have one more shot at this.”

Drave took a step back, “maybe we should just leave.”

“Leave?” Xanatos asked, grabbing the other man’s tunic. “Not until I get what I came for.”

Drave tried to reason with him, “You said yourself, they are on to us. We won’t be able to kill Skylar…”

“Killing Qui-Gon’s precious Skylar was only one part of my plan”, Xantos said. “My main objective is to steal the shipload of crystalline vertex that is being held in the Temple’s treasury room.” He swung around, “You can quit lurking, Bruck.”

Bruck stepped forward, “what is it you need?”

“What is the chatter inside the temple right now?” Xanatos asked. He knew the Temple was a breeding ground for gossip.

Bruck gave a lopsided grin, “well, Masters Yoda and Windu have ordered Skylar to remain inside the Temple.”

“It will be impossible to kill her now,” Drave said in a slightly panicked voice. “There are too many Jedi and”, his words were cut off as he felt an invisible hand around his neck. He gasped for breath.

Xanatos gazed at Drave with hate-filled eyes before he released the force grip on the man. Drave fell to the ground. Xanatos flexed his hand and smiled, “Oh, we will kill her. In fact, we will kill two porgs with one stone. After that, we will help ourselves to the crystalline vertex.”
