As to the pics thread I think I agree with @harpua we either lock it or we add some sort of discussion component. Already two picture threads in the F&G

I would argue that it got a lot more discussion recently because of the US election and everything leading up to the inauguration. Before that it was still mostly just tweets. But like I said, I'm not asking for it to be moved and don't really care where it ends up. I just want to know what the criteria is and how we can avoid having all these debates on what thread belongs where.

Sorry for the double post but I do want to add that looking at the forum now since it's creation, I do think there actually is some benefit to having a separate forum for message board games specifically. It's the "Fun" stuff where I think it's gotten a little iffy.

Split Fun and Games into Fun and Games! Hashtag!

I can't tell you about a set of criteria, because there's not one. I don't think there can be one, or that creating a set of rules is worth the time and effort. By its own nature, threads are judged one by one. That's unlikely to change in the near future.

A 67 page thread about this, and no set criteria can be come up with? It's just all how we feel about certain threads?

Kind of goes back to my point about what this all was for in the first place, if that's the best that can be come up with that's going to stand for the foreseeable future.

It's just grouping things on a message board - contrary to what the bizarre "litigation" process related to bans would lead us all to conclude, it can be a fuzzy "how does it feel?" thing. It doesn't really matter. And I say this as someone who was against splitting.

The latter has always been my broad perception of the art thread and it's definitely stuck out in my mind as the oddest thread that hasn't moved. I agree with some other posters that ****posting definitely shouldn't move because the fights in there can get as downright ugly as any Senate thread, which is not only a substantial discussion, but discussion contrary to F&G's positive vibes, maaaaaaaan.

Should've just put your foot down at the start and not make the forum like you wanted to. :p

But anyway, I get it. Just hope we don't have to keep doing this same song and dance.

Look, move it if you wish but this lock it or make people talk about it, my god, there are many forums that have similar threads and no one has issues but here we have some strange "you gotta talk" view which I thought was shot down many pages ago as if all the threads here are some kind of golden monument to quality and discussion. Given too its rather high number of views it's not like all of two people are looking at it. My only issue with it right now is the amount of spamming it gets.

    @MotivateR5D4 just catching up.

you think “how to be a JCCer” should be moved from the JCC?

Do you fundamentally misunderstand the JCC or F&G? Or is it both?

That wasn't my point. I clearly said that was one thread of several that were starting to become spammy as of late.

If you would like, however, please feel free anyway to share what your fundamental understanding is of the JCC and F&G. I'm sure that would be welcomed by all who have been a part of this discussion.

How is it spammy? It's a discussion thread, specifically about the JCC. You really don't get it at all.

The widely accepted definition of spam, in the context of the internet is as follows:

Spamming is the use of messaging systems to send an unsolicited message ( spam) to large numbers of recipients for the purpose of commercial advertising, for the purpose of non-commercial proselytizing , or for any prohibited purpose (especially the fraudulent purpose of phishing ).

How does any of this apply to the specific threads being discussed?

In the context of the forums - "spamming" doesn't have to be advertising - it can simply be "non-contributory" posts:

    Posting Rules and Regulations

    3. No spamming threads. If you have nothing to contribute with your post, please find another thread.

When the issue was initially being discussed and complained about, that particular definition of spam was not what people were going on. The whole discussion was about unnecessary clutter and things that people were annoyed with that they felt got in the way of many of the other discussions that were happening in Community. And it was largely referred to as spam.

But again, the threads I listed were only just the ones I could think of off the top of my head. There were a few more that have appeared in recent weeks as well that were similar. And I never would have even brought it up if there hadn't been such a lengthy discussion about spam very recently and a literal new forum was created as a result in order to limit the amount of spam in Community. Mind you, this is also about the third lengthy thread about it here in Comms hovering around this general topic.

Personally, I never thought there was a problem in Community. I thought everything was fine being in one place and there wasn't any need to create a new forum.

Obviously what I consider to be spammy is not what the majority here consider to be spammy. We've established that now. And I guess threads will be decided on a case by case basis whether they should be in Community or in F&G.

You could read that statement as two separate concepts, i.e., (1) no spamming, and (2) a relevancy requirement. In other words, the second sentence does not modify the first.

Here most of us (I think) were using spam as a generic term to indicate any +1 thread like Free Association, the ABC of famous people, Answer a question with a question, what did you just bought, Post a random whatever etc etc.

When people started being bothered by it, those threads were occupying virtually the whole first page, with the exception of few politics and sport threads. Whenever a new discussion thread was created, it was buried in about one hour, because there were posters who could be able to up something like 10 threads in 5 minutes, really crazy numbers.

So, one possibility was to do nothing, but some members were so frustrated that they arrived at the point of leaving the community for weeks.
Another possibility was to lock those threads. But that would have been unfair toward Iron lord, Tina, and whoever enjoys them.

So they went for the third option, which is to give the spam lovers a safe space where they could spam as long as they wanted, and at the same time allow the JCC to breathe.

Then, some people really love drama, so we had bizarre situations like the hudzu controversy, but a part from sporadic episodes like that it seems to me that the change has been very well received.

The JCC surely looks better to me now, and also the F&G is cooler than I was expecting and there are genuinely good threads there as well.

I think fun and games should be renamed to Canto Bight Casino and abbreviated to CBC

@3sm1r hit the nail on the head. Had certain posters in the +1/what (blank) did you (blank) threads been able to restrain themselves from making those threads cover the first page of Community then the split never would have occurred. But they didn't and here we are

Even if you think certain new Community threads are spam (which I haven't seen evidence of) they certainly aren't overloading the front page like the others.

Just for conversations sake here, I don't know if I agree with that reasoning. The JCC had been that way for a long time, certainly for as long as I have been a user here. And I don't think that because a few users had become overly active during a specific stretch of time that an entirely new forum needed to be created in response to it. Especially when you take into account the kind of year we had last year where everybody was at home, stressed out, and had nothing else to do except be more active in their online communities. I had even mentioned that a while back in this thread, that once things settle down with the pandemic and with the political situation, that the JCC would probably naturally start to slow down again. And to just wait for that to happen before any decisions get made.

Now, if this was an idea that was already on the table prior to the heightened level of activity there over the last 6-12 months, than I can see how that would be the catalyst to finally implement it. But if this was done solely in response to that, then I think it was a bit of an overreaction.

Again, not trying to argue here. Just for conversations sake.

If the situation had become so unbearable that people were leaving the forum, then I'd say that probably the change was actually needed ?

Were people actually getting so annoyed by it that they were leaving the forum? Because from what I can tell, most of the same people have been active there over the last 6-12 months. I can't recall there being any kind of noticeable drop in users there, or users claiming they are leaving due to being so annoyed with the activity there, during that time.

I can say that for myself, browsing the JCC first became increasingly overwhelming once a bunch of other forums were consolidated into it (around 2012), and then when an influx of +1 threads gradually began to dominate the forums over the years. If this is your only account, you have been part of these forums for nearly six years. The JCC has been around for over twenty.

The problem I have with this conversation is an inability I'm seeing on your part to empathize with a perspective that isn't yours. It is ok if you don't like how things currently stand, but if you can't recognize that enough people thought the state of the JCC was enough of a problem to spend 67 pages debating about it, and that many people were unhappy enough with how the forum was operating to log out completely, then there's really no point in engaging with you.
