Ah, I see you’re using profanity like the literature of this period. Jacqueline Susann, Harold Robbins, the giants.

The whale’s ancestor that was fully land-dwelling was more deer-like than dog-like, and looked nothing like a hippo. And the whale definitely didn’t descend from a hippo. It’s just that hippos descended from the same common ancestor as whales. But that common ancestor looked sort of like a rat-like deer.

True. More descended from a "hippo ancestor" than from a hippo itself. The "whatever it was" was the ancestor of whales and hippos, and not deer, but it makes sense that it would have looked somewhat deerlike.

Yes, deer-like. With sort of a big, long rat face.

It also may not have been fully land dwelling, if we go only by "most recent common ancestor of whale and hippo, and count the hippo as "a land animal" despite its aquatic habits:

    https://phys.org/news/2005-01-scientists-link-whale-closest-relative.html

In a paper appearing this week in the Online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Boisserie and colleagues Michel Brunet and Fabrice Lihoreau fill in this gap by proposing that whales and hippos had a common water-loving ancestor 50 to 60 million years ago that evolved and split into two groups: the early cetaceans, which eventually spurned land altogether and became totally aquatic; and a large and diverse group of four-legged beasts called anthracotheres. The pig-like anthracotheres, which blossomed over a 40-million-year period into at least 37 distinct genera on all continents except Oceania and South America, died out less than 2 and a half million years ago, leaving only one descendent: the hippopotamus.

Dolphins kill babies of other species. Male dolphins will kill their own children.

Sharks are at least honest when they go around killing things.

Dolphins give off this sweet demeanour which is just a lie
