Theres news going around that Venice the city of italy is flooding because of high water rising. I hope things will turn around and it will be a shame to see the art and culture go down in history.

Like most of these cases happening right now, it's not just or even primarily sea level rise. Venice has always been at risk of flooding. Exacerbating that is poor management of the lagoon (getting rid of all natural wetlands, allowing giant cruise ships whose wakes contribute to erosion), failure to build any flood control system, and the city itself sinking into the ground.

That said, it is funny that shortly after the local government rejected climate change measures their chamber was flooded for the first time ever.

When the older generation finally dies off and our children and grandchildren realize what they’ve been left with, I can see the term “fossil fuels” being outlawed. At that point, there won’t be much else that we can do.

Maybe the antagonists from ‘Rainbow Six’ were onto something.

Disease will cull humanity. Eventually, something like Ebola will emerge that is just as deadly and far more contagious. A year after that happens, there will be a lot less people around. While the emissions from their rotting bodies (which ultimately will decompose where they fall once civilization breaks down) will release significant amounts of methane into the atmosphere, the effect will be temporary. Should be a boon to the buzzard population, though.

Yeah,im waiting for something to happen and then millions of indians to start marching on the same route that alexander the great took, only it will be towards europe instead of away from it. It will make the syrian crisis look small.

The world has to absorb the additional population of four Beijings every year. How do you even contemplate a 7% annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the face of that? If the US sought a ten year 50% reduction in emissions it would buy the rest of the world some time, but not all that much, maybe a few years. Just think of everything you use or do that requires electricity and don't use/do it for 3.5 days out of the week.

I dunno...people have lots of kids in order to have someone around to support them, right? And they have fewer kids when they start to become more financially secure right? So I guess just set up a better social safety net and pay people not to have children...

just giving all women access to education and family planning services so that every woman everywhere would have the resources to delay and space out pregnancies would dramatically reduce the global population growth rate. Implementing that today would still be too late to prevent climate catastrophe, but it might help reduce the misery of climate change mitigation efforts.

It's interesting that the doom and gloom of official reports has finally caught up to my default level of doom and gloom. I'm no longer really able to out doom and gloom the actual projections.

So, assuming we have infinite political will...can't we just move people away from the areas that will be impacted most by climate change? Make people have fewer kids, ration water supplies, ban meat and make a ton of cheap plant protein to feed people...

Keeping projections to within this century, and keeping things to areas where heat will become unlivable (areas in the Middle East and South-Eastern Asia), you’re already talking about at least 1.5 billion people. Got a place in mind that will welcome 1.5 billion people?

That's why I included the qualified "assuming we have infinite political will". If all 300 million of us Americans decided that saving lives was the absolute highest priority, then we could bring them all here to our country. It's not a matter of can we do it, it's a matter of will we do it.

We won’t. You can count on that. We’re way too selfish of a society to do what needs to be done.

Why? We have people who are willing to risk and sacrifice their lives to save others in wartime. Bringing in a ton of refugees really isn't asking all that much by comparison.

Have you seen what’s been happening in regards to immigrants and refugees coming to the United States over the past 3 years? You seriously believe we’re suddenly going to absorb a billion people in North America?

Are we living on the same planet?

Serious answer: The difference is that Jason Mamoa addressing the UN wasn't turned into a media circus by ABC/CBS/CNN/MSN/Fox broadcasting his every move. I'm pretty sure that at least 90% of the blowback Greta Thunberg received was spurred on not by anything she said or did, but by the fact that she was turned into an icon by the global media.

Joke answer: And also because people care so little for Aquaman that making jokes about him just isn't worth the effort anymore.

Don’t worry, I’m sure Florida’s GOP leadership will come up with a good solution, such as cracking down on (non-Cuban) illegal immigrants or something similar as a distraction from the actual problem. Or maybe they’ll just let Miami drown since it always votes Democratic anyway.
