If we get Thrawn it'll most likely be an updated version since the old EU Legends has been slated.

Will we like a new Thrawns, it will not be the Thrawn we are familiar with from the Thrawn Trilogy novels.

I hope he's significantly improved from the previous version. Though I imagine he'll have some strong similarities, as Zahn will be writing him.

But I think that is just as much part of the problem.

Filoni in particular has taken a very spiritual approach to what he is doing with the force in Clone Wars and Rebels. That explanation and for that matter the idea of the Ysalamiri just goes a little too close to the "true sci-fi" that separates say, Trek from Wars.

Agreed. And that's the main thing I appreciate about Filoni's direction. That and his commitment to the McQuarrie aesthetic.

Predatory animals utilize heightened senses to hunt prey.

These prey animals also have traits to help them avoid predation. Such as camouflage, scent, armor, etc...

I don't see why a predator animal in SW couldn't cancel out the Force to confuse its prey.

I am sure Thrawn would seek to acquire such an animal if he is hunting Force Sensitives.

The force is a fundamental building block of all life/ matter in the universe, including an ysalamiri. And it's mystical. A lizard being able to block it is silly in that regard. It would essentially have to block its own existence in order to block the force. Zahn used it as a convenient way of knocking the Jedi down to size. I appreciate the intent, but wish he'd chosen a different way of doing that.

Not to mention that the force should really be treated as a metaphor for tapping into one's innate potential, unclouded by anxiety, fear, etc. What kind of thematic value is it to have a lizard stop people (Jedi) from fulfilling that potential? Turns the force into a mechanical magic system. Fan fiction. Has no thematic value in the real world.

I guess I am more accepted since I thought the NJO series are some great books.

I enjoyed the Vong and how:
Onimi was able to block their Force essence.

It was a practical way for Thrawn to make sure he and his men were safe from Joruus C'Baoth.

    Right.

Wasn't the alien's ecology explained by Thrawn and Karrde sort of vague, anyway? Because I never saw them as being a natural creature without the Force, but rather a creature who's able to create a way to use it in its favor. Am I wrong here?

I don't the ysalamir will be necessary. I doubt he'll be in a direct encounter with any Jedi.

He's going after the Rebels. 2 of which, are Kanan and Ezra. Might run into Maul possibly as well.
Would be a missed opportunity imo.

Disagree. If he's able to stand toe to toe with Force users and defeat them WITHOUT the aid of magical Force-cancelling salamanders, then that makes him even more impressive.

The previous poster said " I doubt he'll be in a direct encounter with any Jedi."
He's going out and trying to stop them. It would be a missed opportunity if he didn't meet them in person at least once. Nothing about using the ysalamir.

Did he block the Force or conceal his ability and his commitment to the dark side?

Someone posted on another thread they hope in the GAT novel the Vong appear. I hope not. The worst idea in the EU. SW is about internal conflict, not about the baddies being the Other. And it's both the relative nature of the Force, not about it being blocked.

Until now. How can SW keep going if it doesn't evolve, branch out and try new things? Why limit the possible story potential?

Oh, you mean like the new Imperial and Sith rip-off groups we have in TFA? That originality? Don't me make laugh.

The Yuuzhan Vong are far more original than the First Order and Knights of Ren ever were.

Besides when was the last time we saw the Vong in a story? Maul: Lockdown or X-Wing Mercy Kill several years ago? Then Invasion and Legacy comics several years before that and then the NJO series, several years before that? And how many Imperial and Sith/Dark Side factions have we gotten since 03? Way too many to count.
