Today, November 17, 2018; marks the 40th anniversary of the much hated and oft bootlegged Star Wars Holiday Special.
First aired on CBS November 17, 1978 this TV special was a variety show of sorts that centred on Chewie's family celebrating the Wookiee holiday of Life Day.

The special is famous for its notorious poor quality and the first appearance of Boba Fett in an animated segment that was later included as an easter egg on the Star Wars The Complete Saga blu-ray set.

George Lucas himself once famously later spoke of the special saying, “If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it.”
Who else is celebrating the 40th anniversary by watching this today?

It gets a lot of flak (many of it deserved), but it has some charm and there are things I genuinely like about it. I enjoy the Boba Fett cartoon and I love seeing some of the deleted footage and unused alien designs shown in the cantina scenes.
