Got bored with all that highlighting, so HERE THERE BE SPOILERS

One thing I noticed was the large amount of swearing in the book. We had a couple of "bloody"s in the earlier films (which weren't in the books), but in book 7, we had 1 arse, 1 BITCH (in capitals), and 2 bastards. As well as several "effings". Appropriate for kids?

Had this discussion last night - personally I think it's a bit much for a book aimed at younger children.

However, it turns out that the Oxford dictionary no longer count 'bastard' or 'bitch' as swear words, so it seems officially they don't count. As for 'effing', everyone knows what it's supposed to be but changing it to 'effing' seems to make it ok for some reason?!

The dictionary may not count it, but I'd bet a fair few parents do (including me :p )

Younger kids? Personally since Goblet of fire I don't think the books were aimed at younger kids.

I suppose if the first book was published in 1997 and aimed at 9 to 11 year olds then the real HP fans would be about 19 to 21 now and would have grown up with the series. I think the odd swear word could be accepted....

Personally, I think that JK has done a superb job with the kids in the series, and how they deal with adolescence. A lot of people moaned about Harry's attitude in OOTP, but she was spot on with him.

But the swearwords in TDH were by the adults, and the capitalised "BITCH" was by Mrs Weasley, so it was out of character in my opinion. I think the "bastards" were also by adults but don't quote me on that.

"BITCH" was entirely appropriate considering the Bellatrix was about to go and curse Ginny into the middle of next Thursday.

Greetings, I have to say I really did enjoy this book until it hit the 19 years later part :( I would rather have had more tid bits explaining what had happened to the various minor characters, having grown rather fond of Luna....what the hell happened to her (As in long term future)? I always feel it's a mistake introducing new characters at the end of a book; it's like introducing a new argument into an essay conclusion.

But otherwise I felt it was truly fantastic. I can't understand how JK manages to make cringe worthy moments (like Kreacher rallying the house Elves) into cheer worthy moments, although little elves running around with sharp pointy cleavers is a little nightmarish to me!

Some sort of return must be made, at least to finish off some character endings, what happened to the goblins and their relationship to the Wizarding community? Luna, Choo, did Harry become an Auror....? These are all little things that I would like resolved in some way. Some allusions are made, Kingsley for head of the ministry etc... But I wants? more as I didn?t find the ending truly satisfying.

Twas a good book, to be honest the 19 Years later thing was nicely done, could of done with more information but it might of been "too much"...Though it would of been nice to see what alot of people were doing... I really liked the part where harry mentioned to his kid "You were named after one of the greatest headmasters of Hogwarts, and the One that was in Slytherin was probably the most bravest man I've known" That was a cool moment...Ahh snape..What a good charector!

Anyway, my latest venture is reading all the books in succession...Book 1 and 2 go pretty fast ;0 Only a few hundred pages between em...Though it was nice to see alot of cross referencing and all the books fitting into each other... :D

I enjoyed the book a lot, I felt it dealt well with the harsh realities of a war and the loss that happens. I was saddened by the deaths of some opf the characters. Although I was expecting one of the main 3 or Hagrid to die.
All was resolved as I expected it to be, although Voldemort's death seemed a bit anticlimactic for a wizard of such immense power.

I don't think the swearing is a problem. The series was designed for kids to read following Harry's age (1 when you are 11, 2 when you are 12 etc). A book about a 17 year old, meant generally to be read by people that age and above, would have more adult language.

The epilogue was fun if slightly pandering too fans. I guessed even before I read it (which was a few days after I'd finished the actual story) the name of one of Harry's kids.

I wonder what Rowling will do if she ever goes back to the Harry potter world?
She has basically concluded Harry's story. She might possibly write about one of Harry's kids or do books along the line of those she wrote for World Book Day a few years back (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them & Quidditch Through the Ages) both of which are amusing and informative.

    Hey,
I loved the final book. It's certainly beaten book 3 as the best of the series.

Although I was a little surprised to see such language, I don't really see it as a problem. As said before, those that have followed the books since it's release in 1997 will be old enough now anyway, and I completely agree.

As for the epilogue, I loved the Draco Malfoy part of that scene.

At least it did just say 'effing' and not the word that it probably meant. Also, if you remember, the books were originally intended to be released one every year, so that those who read the first book when they were 11 would now be 17, and I expect that most people will have heard a lot worse than that. I don't think it was too much, but it's hard to say.

My point is that although the books may have been aimed at those who have followed from the start, JK is well aware that new young kids are starting every day from the start, and should have been more mindful of that
