I always thought that the word unethical should be inethical. But that's just me. ;)

It's not the semicolon that's important, it's what it's used for. People hate it because it does two different things. I hate it too, with all my heart, but there needs to be something for those two different tasks. My solution is the best one frankly. I'm trying to embrace everyone's point of view here, but your idea is pretty bad. Take some time and come back with something better. I believe in you[IMG]

I challenge everybody to find a single situation in which semicolons couldn't simply be replaced by points without losing anything in terms of meaning or emphatic power.

It must be an actual practical example, so that I can demonstrate that points would be just fine.

I have a long list of complaints about your proposal, including that it's terrible, spiteful and unimaginative. it makes me sick to my stomach, almost to the point of vomiting. and it shows a complete lack of appreciation for, indeed almost a total ignorance of, the finer points of grammar.

Points there garble the flow and meaning. My proposal:

Ooo… I'm intrigued by the parentheses (it's very stylish).

You're doing it wrong. We're getting rid of the parenthesis for parenthetical asides. Those will be replaced by double asterisks: **

the thing is - a semi-colon is more like a semi-full-stop or a big comma. It's nothing like a colon.

By god, that's the solution - a big comma. The Comma, if you will.

The word hardly. It's a trap for foreigners.
My italian boss once wrote: "Thanks to Luigi for the last 45 years where he hardly worked...."

Comma, comma, comma, commaleon, you comma and go, you comma go.

Writing would be easier if your colors were like my dream... Red, gold, and green, red, gold, and green

The Brexit coin is already a tour de force of Newspeak. The only way to make it doubleplusgood would be to squeeze in the word "partnership"

Although I agree the Oxford comma is important..we should demand it always be used to avoid things like this sentence:

"I am going to dinner with my parents, Batman and Superman."

Unless Batman and Superman are your parents, this is terrible.
