Now that we are about a week away, if you are staying farther away from the OCCC than you'd like because you found a cheaper rate than the closer hotels, it's time to start checking the travel sites for deals. As it gets closer to the actual check-in date you can sometimes find deals. Hotels hate having empty rooms so they'll put the deals out there.
The catch is that you usually have to pre-pay the full amount in advance when you book at a discount travel site. I'm keeping an eye on this but am holding off for now. While the closer hotels are not much more expensive than where I am now, I get free breakfast and WiFi, which they don't provide.

If you want to change your hotel this late in the game, here's what I'd do:
1) Confirm whether (and up until when) you can cancel your existing reservation without penalty. Most hotels give you until 24 hours before check-in (but confirm this).
2) Find and book your new hotel
3) CALL that new hotel to make sure they have your reservation
4) Cancel your old hotel ONLY after you are comfortable that you got the new reservation

UPDATE**
If you made reservations with One Peak hotel block ( official hotels of the conn), Everyone's Names were sent to all the hotels yesterday. It will take 24-48 hrs from yesterday for the hotels to have a updated guest list.Some hotels may or MAY NOT charge you the one nights room fee as the One Peak web site says. You can call the hotel and ask them if it is there policy.
