How did Luke not see where he went?

 

What people don't know is that Darth Vader is an accomplished breakdancer. After landing on his back, he simply went into the windmill and windmilled himself under a control console and into the room at the other side, leaving Luke to wonder where he went.

How did Luke not see where Vader went he got kicked off the platform in the carbonite chamber in ESB?

 

Vader fell out of frame.

 

He hunkered down and wrapped himself up in his cape so Luke couldn't see him.

 

I just chalk it all up to the odd confusing layout of Cloud City.

Though maybe Vader's cloak has some Batman-like properties that along with using the Force, allows Vader to swoop and evade in such situations.

In watching the scene, Luke stands over where Vader fell, but doesn't immediately pursue. Instead he watches, then steps over and jumps down. My guess is Vader used the force to land properly and disappeared down a corridor. Luke seeing this, steps aside and jumps down to take a different corridor in hope of cutting Vader off at the pass, so to speak. Vader used the confusing layout of the Cloud City hallways to stay ahead and get the jump on Luke.

 

I think it is fair to say that the main locations in Cloud City, i.e. the white promenade hallway, the Carbon Freezing Chamber, the lower illuminated tunnel, the control room interior with the round window and the exterior walkway over the shaft don't really link together in any kind of cohesive manner from one to the other. They are all beautifully dressed, painted and lit locations, but all are isolated from each other and don't connect altogether logically. That's my take on it. You just have to go with it, which is easy because the whole sequence is so awesome.

 

Why would Luke want to jump down there? It's dark and spooky, and Vader's hiding down there. Seriously Vader has the advantage in that situation.
