I ****ing remember this debate! When I made a rebuttal, he said that hypothetically if he went to Pakistan, became a citizen, and integrated, he still wouldn't be Pakistani. And I was like "no you dolt you would be Pakistani how the **** do you think Pakistanis came to be? People from all over South Asia moved there when the country was formed."

I love that you even note the issue here, which is that white Americans are among the most boring people on Earth so they hyphenate themselves as Euro-Americans to seem interesting. Obviously the best is the "Irish American", whose family was Irish 300 years ago but will legit tell people they're really, really Irish (The /r/Ireland sub is a beautiful place to see the Plastic Paddy shanked with the switchblade of reality). But the Italian American is another one, as are the "Nordic-Americans" who take DNA tests and get unexpected results, like 12% Scandinavian despite "feeling really Nordic."

These people are the types who want to gatekeep the experience of "being American".

 

It’s funny you should mention Irish-Americans, because what actually got OZK banned was posting 19th century anti-immigrant propaganda comparing Irish people to black people (of course the language and depictions were not quite so neutral) and therefore he wasn’t being racist... somehow, I can’t even hope to remember his logic... and then he never submitted a UR.

Edit: Also, and this is admittedly me connecting some dots that were never explicitly connected, I think the ****ing circumcision obsession had less to do with genital mutilation and more to do with the religious group the practice is most stereotypically associated with.
