How would you feel if Fellowship of the Ring beat Star Wars as the second highest grossing film in history. How about if it beat Titanic as well. How would you feel?

I wouldn't have any feelings about it.Highest gross does not matter to me.

Doesn't matter- cos none of those "higest grossing" lists ever take inflation into account. Even if FOTR does become higest grossing, give it 5 years and something will have replaced it

When I achieve world domination, and made all peoples free and equal by simply taking all the money in the world and setting up the planet as a huge arnarco-collective society. I'll make a home movie, call it Star Wars Episode 7 - What Jar Jar did next, charge myself several trillion pounds and make sure a Star Wars film tops the lists forever ;)

Don't give a flying monkey's butt how much a movie makes, as long as it's a good movie.

I'd say that FotR deserves it because it's a better movie than Ep.1. :D

While I too am indifferent, I'd have to agree with That_Flashing. I'd be happy.

I could also care less. Titanic beat the Star Wars movies and has had no effect on me. I love the SW saga most of all and the revenue has no impact on whether or not the movie will be released. All I want is to see it. I don't care if the theater is packed full or if I'm the only one in there.

If it beat out Titanic that'd be pretty cool.

I wouldn't mind in the slightest.

But since I seriously doubt it will do either, the question is rather pointless.

Why do you think its impossible?

Its been number one for three weeks, its nominated for an oscar, it has cute guys, girls will go see it over and over again, guys will go see it over and over again, it has all this hype, its made 200 million and its only been out three weeks.

And ticket prices have gone up.

Yeah, if FOTR has the legs to stomp Titanic, I'm all for it.

It's not going to happen, but I really couldn't care less if it did.

Because there's no desperate, ultimately-doomed-romance in FOTR. :p

Mitt for LotR to beat Titanic Domestically it would have to pull in 30 million the next two weeks, 20 the eight after that and not fall below 10 million until around weekend 16.

And thats only domestically, to beat it World wide it would have to do even better.

I don't know how sympathetic the general audience is towards bi-sexual hobbit romances, B.J. ;)

It won't though. Looking at it mathematically it can't. It's a 3 hour movie. They can only show it a limited amount of times per day. So that drops the gross down a bit. It will make alot of money but with that working against it, the movie probably won't reach TPM.

But I really don't care. In a couple years something else will beat Titanic and this will all be a moot point.

I'm betting it could do it. Lots of people go see movies that are nominated for Oscars just because they are, even if they don't know anything about the movie itself.

Man, I'm re-reading these books, and I love them, but does poor Sam ever have a man crush on Frodo or what?

And I quote, "Lay you head on my lap"- Sam to Frodo.

BTW, as far as the box office game, it's unlikely FOTR will get in that territory.
It's pace is noticeably slower than PM at this point.
Also this past weekend, three movies outperformed it per screen.
Still, I want FOTR to do great because it raises the bar for S&S movies.

Amen to that, Kiki. I can name the good high fantasy movies on one hand: The Dark Crystal, Legend, Willow, Dragonslayer, and of course, Fellowship of the Ring*. Otherwise, the genre is a wasteland of tripe. I'm hoping FOTR spawns imitators of a lot higher quality than the mediocre Conan movies did.

*There's also The Princess Bride, Highlander, and a couple of the Arthurian and Robin Hood movies, but they're not really the same.
