I bet I've the strangest opinion about this: I want it to beat Titanic, but not TPM.

    Beats me too.

It won't though. Looking at it mathematically it can't. It's a 3 hour movie. They can only show it a limited amount of times per day. So that drops the gross down a bit. It will make alot of money but with that working against it, the movie probably won't reach TPM.

    Titanic was three hours.

Pozzi, I'm right there with you. It's silly and petty, but I wish it could do that :D

As far as a fantasy renaissance sparked by LOTR, I think it'll happen.
Just like the way Silence of the Lambs 'legitamized' horror movies and paved the way for Sixth Sense etc. and killed the old, tired, cheesy Jason/Freddy type horror movies.

I doubt FOTR will beat Titanic, or TPM. Titanic was a freak phenomenom. I'm pretty sure James Cameron distributed farmer Maggot's mushrooms to most of the female population of the world ;)

TPM was the first Star Wars flick in 16 years.

Still, I think FOTR will break the $350 million mark domestically, and will do some $300 in the rest of the world. As long as it beats Harry Potter I'll be happy.

I agree with Jorus. As long as it beats HP I'm happy.

In all honesty it wouldn't bug me if it did. Because LOTR is a great movie. But yeah it better beat HP because yeah.

I really don't care if TPM and FOTR had only each made $8.50, I'm just happy that they were made, and that I saw them.

Nah, there is a difference between FOTR beating SW, and Titanic beating SW. Titanic actually does suck.

FOTR, however, is the best non-SW movie. (Sorry Back to the Future!)

Someone said it best a while back,
    SW is like the Beatles.
Someday, some set of movies (probably not FOTR or Harry Potter) will outdo all the SW movies at the box office just like Michael Jackson or whoever sold more than the Beatles.

But they'll still always be the ground breaker, the record setter to measure by.

I really hope it does beat Titanic. But, it probably won't. I did get tired of hearing about Titanic real quick after I saw it..........

FOTR might have a shot at TPM for ticket sales though. I enjoyed FOTR a lot. But, if it does in fact beat TPM, then so be it. I'll be rooting for AOTC even more. ;) :D

In the end, I don't think total ticket sales will determine how much I like or dislike a particular movie.

This probably is going to make me a horrinle Star Wars fan, but I wouldn't mind. FOTR is a damn good movie, and I think it deserves to beat Star Wars--and Titanic.

I really hope it does beat out both TPM and Titanic. LOTR is a far, far better movie than TPM, in my opinion. And I didn't like Titanic all that well either. Leo is not my favorite guy, not to mention that I prefer to be entertained when I go to the theatre, not touched. I like to be smiling when I walk out the door, instead of all blotchy from crying. :)

FOTR deserves the biggest gross of all time!

    I doubt it.
    It might though.
If it does, no problem. FotR is a fine movie.
What would bug me is the hoards of fanboys who would use it to flock here and bash SW.

    1 Titanic (1997) $1,835,300,000
    2 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) $922,300,000
    3 Jurassic Park (1993) $919,700,000
    4 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) $811,600,000
    5 Independence Day (1996) $811,200,000
    6 Star Wars (1977) $797,900,000

    ...

    ...

31 Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The (2001) $441,500,000

Good luck with LotR beating Harry Potter, it just sailed over Star Wars and Independence Day. No doubt Jurassic Park and TPM will be next but Potter beating Titanic?

I don't have the slightest doubt that it might.

As for LotR, I'm not holding any bets against that either, it certainly was a better movie than TPM (even though TPM was good).

    GO POTTER AND LOTR!!! GO!!

It certainly wouldn't matter to me. How much a movie earns in the box office is not important - what's important is whether or not you feel that it was a movie from which you learnt lessons.

Erm, Potter is over a billion dollers behind Titanic, there isn't even a remote chance of HP beating it.

Drax, where did you get those figures? Is it a regularly updated site? If so, please post a link. I'd like to be able to track the movies' progress over the next few months :)

Not to mention it'll come in handy when AOTC is released, too. COme on, Lucas and Tolkien. We gotta kick some Potter ass.
